Chapter 1702 Compromise
Chapter 1702 Compromise
She pushed open the door. Behind an exquisite carved screen, a man sat by the window.
Rachel stood at the doorway, looking at his silhouette through the screen.
Suddenly, her eyes stung unbearably. She took a deep breath, clenched her fingers, and walked over.
The waiter closed the door.
Rachel came to sit across from the man.
The woven rattan chair felt cool the moment she sat down.
Besides the aroma of coffee, the air carried that familiar scent from the man—a scent that stirred up turmoil inside her.
Rachel met Jamie's eyes. "You should know about my situation. You know what I want. Tell me, what will it take to... save my husband?"
Jamie poured her a glass of water. When he heard the word "husband," his pupils contracted sharply. He looked at her face—all the running around during this time had made her much thinner, her chin pointed. Her skin was pale, that fragile kind of pale. Thinking about how she had become this thin for another man, his heart ached.
Jamie's eyes darkened as he looked at her pale, dry lips and said hoarsely, "Have some water first."
"Jamie, he can't hold on much longer. The doctor said one week—if there's no suitable kidney donor within one week, Elmer won't make it." Tears welled up in Rachel's eyes. She suddenly stood up and knelt before the man in front of her. "Jamie, please."
Jamie's whole body trembled.
His fingers clenched into fists as he looked at the frail woman kneeling on the ground. "For him, you'd even kneel before me? Jamie—what an ironic way to address me."
Rachel closed her eyes, her whole body shaking. "Whether to save him or not is up to Jamie. Please, Jamie, for the sake of the Howard Family..."
"The Howard Family—what does the Howard Family mean to me?" Jamie said coldly. "I won't save him. Go back."
A tear rolled down Rachel's cheek. She crawled forward on her knees a few steps and grabbed the hem of the man's proud black suit pants. "Jamie." Her fingers gripped tightly in humble pleading. The woman's pale, slender, tense fingers formed a stark contrast against the man's black pants.
"As long as Jamie is willing to help me, I'll do anything. Please, Jamie, save my husband."
Rachel didn't want to beg Jamie, didn't want to put herself in such a passive position. But she had no choice. Elmer couldn't wait any longer. She couldn't just watch Elmer die.
Jamie looked down, his slender fingers carelessly lifting Rachel's chin, looking at her tear-reddened eyes. "You like Elmer that much?"
Once, this girl had liked him the same way.
The tears had been shed for him.
But now, everything was given to another man.
A flame of jealousy burned in his heart. Jamie's eyes seemed to catch fire too. His fingers slowly tightened on Rachel's chin. "Say it. Do you like Elmer?"
"He's my husband. Of course I like him."
"Fine. From today on, either he disappears from this world, or he disappears from your mind. Forget him, divorce him, and I'll agree to give him the kidney."
Rachel's pupils dilated in shock.
She froze for a few seconds.
When Rachel came, she had thought Jamie wouldn't agree.
But she hadn't expected that his condition for the kidney transplant would be for her to divorce Elmer.
Rachel's lips trembled. "Why?"
