Chapter 68
*LUNA*
In the hours that follows I was whisked away by the stylists, Alpha Kayden had hired to prefer me for the official feast to introduce me to the neighbouring packs. After our confrontation, I was surprised he was going to such lengths for a mate he doesn't even want. I won't blame the entire servants or pack for gossiping about this one. It was a shock.
I also haven't been able to speak to Rebekah since the shocking event started. When the stylists were done with me, they turned me towards the mirror pausing for me to make any comment about my looks, when it turned out that I wasn't. The leader sighed and walked away, they followed her out and Rebekah strode in a few seconds later.
"This is so unbelievable and I'm so happy for you" She shrieked pulling me into a tight embrace, probably sensing it was becoming difficult for me to breathe, she released me murmuring an apology under my breath. "I'm just so happy. You should be happy about this" She suggested.
"Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy to be alive but being mated to Alpha Kayden isn't the kind of freedom I wanted. Especially not when I don't know his motive behind him, what if he is no different from the councils? You once believe I work for them. I don't think I convince him otherwise" I made a face when I saw her giving me a are you serious look. How can I explain to her that the incident happened before I even decided to work for the councils?
"At least you are not a slave or a mistress where anyone could pick on you. You are a Luna now, your position is very different. I would suggest you make use of it, who knows? You might get the freedom you desire so much" She pointed out coursing me to frown thoughtfully, she had a point but if only my relationship with Kayden was as simple as her own with Darren.
"I will think about that later but right now, I have a feast to get to" I declared showing her my ballroom gown. She grinned scanning me with her eyes.
"You look lovely Luna. Like you were meant to be a Luna" She remarked making my heart freeze for a second. She took a step back after giving me a gentle squeeze.
"I have to get dressed too. I will see you later" She informed me before stepping out of my room. Long after she was gone, I stood at the centre of my room staring at nothing in particular but reflecting on the way my life had changed in the space of a few months. Rebekah was right, if I play my cards right, I might get out of this mating stuff and have the freedom I wanted. How to go about it is something I will figure out later.
An hour or so later Rebekah and I walked into the ballroom hand in hand, I darted a quick look around for any sign of Scarlet in hopes that Kayden freed her too. I didn't miss the way everyone's eyes fall on me immediately after I walked in, jealousy written on their faces. I would gladly trade places with any one of them if they had something I wanted.
Pausing in front of Kayden, Rebekah releases my arm to join her mate. I hesitated in front of him having no idea what to do. In front of everyone present and with them looking on, his hand circled my wrist as he pulled me closer to his body before lowing his head to capture my lips in a heated kiss. Cheers ran out of the background when he finally break the kiss.
I almost died of embarrassment. "Excuse me, I need to drink water" It was lame I know but I wanted to get away from him but then he begin to signal to a maid. I glared at him and all he did was chuckled in response. The maid stretched a tray in front of me, filled with different glasses of water, I took one and take a quick sip before dropping it back.
"Our guests are arriving, smile and behave. If you please me well tonight, I shall reward you but if you disobey me, you will be punished" He growled in my ear, his word made me shiver in fear and anticipation. We've been over this and we have all agreed that something must be wrong with me. I felt a tap on my shoulder, I was surprised to see it was Amelia, at that moment some members of the councils came to break Kayden away from me, possibly to talk him into rejecting me.
"Congratulations! All you had to do was kill the mistress to become the Luna. How clever of you, most girls would have never thought of something like that" She remarked, I couldn't tell for a minute if she was mocking, insulting me or even joking.
'The people's opinions I care about believe that I didn't kill Sophie and neither do I have any motivation to do so. So whatever you think I did, is really your business " Feeling proud of myself I turned to leave but she held me back.
"No matter how you try, you are still always going to be that omega slave! Your kids are not made to be Luna but slaves!" Geez! She sounded so much like the councils. My dislike for her had started to grow into hatred by the second. What Is her problem? Last time I checked she wasn't even friends with Sophie.
"Jealous?" I snapped, the look of disbelief followed by anger that crossed her face was enough to get me through the day so I left her hanging to rejoin Kayden where he sat. There was a huge pile of gifts in front of our tables, all for Luna which made me very uncomfortable. Glancing away from the cake, my heart stops at that moment when I catch sight of a familiar person walking into the room.
The memories I fought so hard to forget came rushing back to me as I stared at Heather, walking in with her mate. The same very man who had tried to force himself on me. Tears blurred my vision as my body shook violently in fear. I felt someone touch me coursing me to scream.
"Let me go!" I cried out standing up from where I was sitting, all I could hear was my own voice, all I could see was the darkness I tried to run away from trying to consume me, and all I could feel was pain. The pain I tried getting away from!
