213. HUMANS WERE IMPOSSIBLE
213. HUMANS WERE IMPOSSIBLE
KADE
I can’t wait to get my wife alone, get her out of that dress, and get her under me. I wanted to do so many things to her.
Lilly and Luna are with Hana. Elijay, Lilly and Luna’s bodyguard was with them, guarding them. I left two trusted soldiers at home. Layla and Zaley are flying back. He doesn’t want to stay here for the night.
We offered to host them. But the guy wants to get the hell out of here. Honestly, I don’t blame him. I prefer to spend my time at home at the end of the day.
By the time we reached the house, I noticed something weird.
Lilly, Luna, and Hana are crying.
It takes us a minute to reach them. Luna ran into her father’s arms. While Lilly hugged her mother. Hana was trying hard to control her tears. But she royally failed the minute Seline held her hand. She too hugged my wife and cried.
“What the hell happened here?” Zaley shouted, glaring at Elijah.
Even the guards who were stationed here have no idea what happened.
“One second they were playing, and the next second they were crying.” He told us.
And the next guard moved closer and started whispering.
I sighed.
Lilly!!
I lifted Lilly in my arms and held her in the air. She stared down at me with those big blue eyes, the same as Zaley’s and smiled.
She looked oddly comfortable, being in the air.
“Where did you hear that Hana is getting married?” I asked.
She made a sound, “Oops.”
Oops! That’s what she has to say.
“Lilly?” I demanded.
“Don’t tell Mama. Promise?” She held out her pinky.
In our position, I can’t really link my Pinky with hers. Because I am holding her in the air.
I nodded instead.
“Daddy told Mama that a bad man is going to marry Hana after Hana goes to college. And I am playing hide and seek with Luna. I hid in the closet. Because I am a good hider. All their words went into my ears.” She waved her hands and made a whooshing sound.
In other words, she was in the shadows and eavesdropped.
I sighed. “And you told Hana?”
“And Luna?” I added.
Lilly nodded. “I can’t let Hana marry a bad man.”
I blinked.
She blinked.
I blinked again.
Lilly is a good kid. The kind of girl who offers her sweater to a street dog. Also, the kind of girl who likes to know everything and remember anything if they find it interesting. Also, the kind of girl who only half understands everything she listens to.
I guess that’s how a six-year-old’s mind works.
“What are you doing?” Came Layla’s voice, who is looking at me and then to Lilly, who is still lifted in the air.
“Mama, look. Uncle Kady is interrogating me.”
Lilly is also the kind of girl who knows how to escape.
"You don't even know what interrogation means."
Lilly shrugged. "No."
"Then why did you say it?"
"It sounded right."
I sighed and put her down.
“Tell Luna that Hana is not going anywhere,” I told my sister, who is scowling at me.
“What exactly happened?”
I looked at Lilly, who was showing her pinky, reminding me I'd made a promise to her.
“Nothing serious,” I assured her.
“I am so dumb,” Hana murmured.
My sister’s family left, and finally, my house doesn’t feel so noisy anymore.
“They cried, and I cried.” She started to explain.
“Why did they cry?” Seline asked her.
Instead of answering her question, Hana looked at me.
“Will you make me marry someone from the outfit because I am one of you, now? I have read on the internet—”
Of course.
“You guys are very traditional. Women have no rights. Do I have to be married for the sake of mafia relations? Do I have to marry an old man?”
“Of course not,” I tell her. “It’s your life. Your wish.”
Somehow, that was the wrong answer. Because Hana teared up.
“Are you saying it because I am not one of you?”
“I—no—you—,” I looked at Seline.
Is she dumb? I signed.
My wife laughed instead, her shoulders shaking.
“No, Hana. You are one of us. But you don’t have to marry anyone if you don’t want to. Do I look like a traditional wife who does everything her husband says and keeps herself to the house?”
Hana shook her head, “You are one of the bravest women I know.”
“See. I am the don’s—,”
“Wife. So you are an exception. What about the rest of us? You guys should give me a heads up if I have to live like that. I will be prepared.”
Selina and I looked at each other and somehow ended up laughing out loud.
“You are not getting married. Period!”
Hana’s eyes went wide. “Will you kill my boyfriend if I had someone outside the outfit?”
Hana sat cross-legged on the rug, helping Luna build a castle out of colourful magnetic tiles.
Lilly suddenly looked up.
"Hana?"
"Hmm?"
"When you get married, what colour dress do you want?"
Luna looked up, too. "Mawwied?"
"Yeah."
Hana laughed.
"I am almost twelve."
"I know. So... when you become eighteen."
The smile slowly disappeared from Hana's face.
"What happens when I'm eighteen?"
Lilly looked genuinely confused.
"You'll marry the bad man."
Hana frowned.
"I... what?"
"Daddy and Mamma talked about it." Lilly nodded very confidently. "I heard everything. I was hiding in the wardrobe."
Hana looked utterly lost.
Lilly continued explaining anyway.
"There was an old grandpa."
"There wasn't."
"There was."
"There wasn't."
"There was in the story Daddy told Mama. They said..."
Lilly tried very hard to remember the exact words.
"...after you become eighteen..."
She pointed at Hana.
"...a bad man wants to marry you."
Luna gasped so dramatically.
"...Ana go?"
Hana immediately shook her head.
"I don't know."
Luna's tiny face crumpled.
"...Ana leave?"
"I don't know."
Lilly nodded sadly.
"I think so."
"WHY?"
"The old grandpa wanted it."
"What old grandpa?"
"The evil one."
"I don't even know any evil grandpas!"
Lilly frowned.
"I don't either."
Silence.
Then Hana spoke so quietly. "...Did Kade say yes?"
Lilly shook her head immediately.
"No."
Hana visibly relaxed.
Then Lilly happily added, "He said he'll kill him."
"...Oh."
Another pause.
"...Why me?"
Lilly tilted her head. "I don't know."
"...Is it because...I'm not one of them?"
Lilly frowned immediately.
"...I'm only here because Kade and Seline took me in."
Lilly looked genuinely horrified. She crawled across the rug and hugged Hana. "You are family."
Hana's eyes watered.
Luna had reached an entirely different conclusion.
She burst into tears.
"Ana no go!"
"I'm not going anywhere."
"Ana pwomise?"
"I promise."
"You pwomise pwomise?"
"I promise promise."
Luna threw herself at Hana.
Then Lilly started crying too because Hana was crying.
Seeing both little girls clinging to her...
Hana couldn't hold herself together anymore.
She hugged them both tightly.
Storm wandered over with his favourite tennis ball.
He proudly dropped it into the middle of the crying pile.
Nobody picked it up.
Storm sighed.
Humans really were impossible.
