Chapter 31 THE NIGHT THE EMBERS TREMBLED
Chapter 31 THE NIGHT THE EMBERS TREMBLED
The desert wind carried the faintest scent of iron.
Not blood.
Something older.
Something that made the embers inside Aeryn coil, as if trying to retreat deeper into her bones. She stood at the edge of the jagged canyon overlooking the Scorchfall Expanse, her cloak snapping behind her like a dark wing. Below, the sands glowed faintly an unnatural, pulsing shimmer, as though the land itself was breathing.
Varos shifted beside her, scanning the horizon with instincts sharpened by centuries. “It’s waking,” he murmured. “The Expanse hasn’t pulsed like this since the ancient Sovereigns sealed the Rift.”
Aeryn didn’t answer immediately.
Because she could feel it too.
A tremor no, not in the ground, but in the emberbound mark that crawled across her chest, the mark that had deepened in color ever since she had claimed the Crown of Cinders. It throbbed with heat now, echoing each pulse from the sands below.
Liora clasped Aeryn’s arm. “Are you sure we should go in tonight? We could wait for dawn. The Rift is less active in sunlight.”
Aeryn gave a faint, humorless smile. “The Hollowed don’t wait for dawn.”
She nodded toward the dark silhouettes shifting far off too fluid to be human, too coordinated to be beasts.
Liora swallowed. “Right. So neither do we.”
Behind them, the Emberguard stood ready, their armor reflecting dim orange light. Yet every warrior kept glancing toward Aeryn as if searching her face for certainty.
As if they didn’t quite trust the land, or the sky, or even themselves anymore.
As if she was the only thread keeping them from unraveling.
Aeryn forced her shoulders straight. “We move. Stay tight. The Rift storms form quickly at night.”
Varos extended a hand, forming a blade of molten crimson. “Lead the way, Ember Sovereign.”
His tone held no mockery this time.
Not after what she had survived.
Not after what she had claimed.
Not after what she had become.
Aeryn stepped off the rocky ledge and began the descent into the canyon.
The deeper they went, the more the world… shifted.
The heat thickened until it felt alive. The sand glowed brighter, tracing veins of light along the canyon walls. A faint hum vibrated through the air, resonating in Aeryn’s bones like a distant chant.
Liora drew closer. “Aeryn… the ground is moving.”
“It’s not moving,” Varos said. “It’s reacting.”
“To what?” she whispered.
Varos’s gaze slid toward Aeryn. “To her.”
Aeryn clenched her jaw. “Focus.”
But the truth sat heavy in her stomach.
The Expanse wasn’t reacting to her power.
It was reacting to the Crown.
To the Sovereign bloodline reactivated after centuries.
To the Ember Sovereign who was never meant to rise again.
A sudden gust of blistering-hot wind forced them to shield their faces. The hum intensified, becoming a roar.
Aeryn felt the mark on her chest blaze.
And then
The sands split open.
A geyser of crimson flame shot upward, spiraling into the sky like a beacon. Aeryn staggered back as heat slammed into her face. The Emberguard scrambled for cover. Liora yelped. Varos grabbed Aeryn’s wrist and dragged her behind a jagged boulder as molten sand rained down around them.
When the eruption finally died, the canyon fell silent again but the silence was not peace.
It was anticipation.
Like thousands of breaths held at once.
Varos exhaled slowly. “That wasn’t natural.”
Aeryn nodded, heart pounding.
Because she had felt it.
Not just heat not just magic.
A presence.
Ancient. Aware.
Watching.
She could sense its attention locked on her.
“Move,” she commanded, trying to mask her trembling. “The Rift is close.”
They continued deeper until the canyon opened into a vast chasm.
The Rift.
A wound in the world.
A tear of crackling emberlight split the desert floor, stretching wider than a fortress and plunging so deep its bottom was lost in swirling red mist. Pillars of broken stone circled it like the ribs of something long dead.
Aeryn had never seen anything so enormous.
Or so wrong.
Liora covered her mouth. “By the gods…”
The Emberguard hesitated at the edge, fear thick as smoke.
But Aeryn’s mark pulsed again slow, steady, commanding.
The Rift answered, glowing brighter.
Welcoming her.
Calling her.
Varos touched her shoulder. “It recognizes the Sovereign blood. But that doesn’t mean it won’t devour you.”
Aeryn stepped forward until the heat of the Rift kissed her skin. “This is why we came.”
Because for weeks, Hollowed attacks had increased coordinated, strategic. Something was directing them. Driving them. And all signs pointed to the Rift reawakening.
If the force beneath it rose…
If the Sovereign Seal broke…
The world wouldn’t burn.
It would hollow out from the inside until nothing but embers remained.
Varos lifted his chin. “Then let us end this quickly.”
As the Emberguard formed a protective ring, Aeryn knelt at the edge and placed her palm against the scorched ground. The Crown of Cinders responded instantly, channels of molten gold flaring up her arm. She closed her eyes and whispered the ancient words she had learned from the Oracle of Ash.
“Cinerem aperio. Ostende te mihi.”
The Rift roared.
The chasm erupted in spirals of light and heat.
The ground shook with violent tremors, knocking several warriors to their knees. Liora clung to the nearest rock formation. Varos summoned a shield of flame around Aeryn as cracks split across the canyon floor.
Aeryn’s eyes flew open
and the world changed.
She was no longer in the canyon.
She stood in an endless plane of ash, beneath a sky of swirling fire. A figure waited for her in the distance tall, draped in emberlight, its face obscured by a mask of molten gold.
A voice echoed inside her skull.
“SO YOU HAVE COME, EMBER SOVEREIGN.”
Aeryn’s breath hitched. “Who are you?”
The figure tilted its head. “THE ONE WHO WAS SEALED. THE ONE YOUR ANCESTORS FEARED.”
“Are you the force controlling the Hollowed?”
A low, rumbling sound like laughter.
“THE HOLLOWED ARE BUT FINGERS OF A MUCH GREATER HAND.”
Aeryn took a step back, fire gathering instinctively in her palms. “What do you want?”
The figure stepped forward, and every ember in the realm trembled in response.
“I WANT WHAT WAS TAKEN.”
The sky cracked open with lightning. The ash beneath her swirled into burning spirals.
“THE CROWN YOU WEAR IS MINE.”
Aeryn’s blood went cold.
“I am the rightful Sovereign,” she said, voice steady despite the heat roaring around her. “You can’t have it.”
Silence.
Then
“VERY WELL.”
The ground shattered beneath her.
A surge of force slammed into her chest, tearing her from the ember realm. She flew backward into her real body with a violent jolt.
She gasped, collapsing to the ground as the Rift erupted in a shockwave of molten light. Varos grabbed her before she could tumble into the chasm.
“Aeryn!” Liora cried. “What happened?”
Aeryn struggled to speak, lungs burning, vision blurred.
“It… spoke to me.”
Varos’s expression darkened. “The imprisoned Sovereign.”
“No,” Aeryn whispered. “Something older.”
The ground shook again once, twice, then violently.
Cracks spiderwebbed outward from the Rift.
The chasm began widening.
The Emberguard scrambled back as chunks of the canyon crumbled into the glowing depths below.
“Aeryn!” Varos barked. “We need to retreat now!”
But Aeryn stared into the Rift.
And the Rift…
stared back.
A faint silhouette rose within the swirling red mist a towering form, its outline flickering like molten shadow.
Not fully formed.
But enough.
Enough to fear.
Enough to know the seal had begun to break.
Aeryn stepped back, horror tightening her throat. “It’s rising…”
The silhouette’s burning eyes locked onto her.
For a heartbeat, everything sound, air, heat stopped.
And then the voice boomed upward from the depths, shaking the canyon walls.
“RUN, LITTLE SOVEREIGN.”
Varos ripped Aeryn away as the canyon floor exploded.
A wall of crimson fire surged upward, devouring everything in its path.
The Emberguard fled.
The sands screamed.
The Expanse convulsed like a living thing.
Aeryn didn’t remember running only Varos dragging her, Liora screaming her name, and the terrible truth echoing through her skull.
The seal was breaking.
And the ancient force beneath the world wanted her.
Not her kingdom.
Not her throne.
Her.
Aeryn st
umbled as the final shockwave hurled them across the canyon and into the darkness of the upper ledge.
Dust rained down.
Silence followed.
But far below…
The Rift pulsed once more.
Like the heartbeat of something waking.
Something hungry.
Something coming for her.
