Chapter 30 THE HEART OF THE MOUNTAIN

Chapter 30 THE HEART OF THE MOUNTAIN
Kaelin expected death.

She expected the molten fire to swallow her alive, to turn flesh and bone and breath into ash before she ever touched the ground. She expected pain sharp, brutal, absolute.

Instead, she plunged through fire as though falling through smoke.

Heat rushed past her in torrents as bright as sunbeams, but it did not sear her. It wrapped around her like a cloak, licking her skin, soaking into her lungs, filling her veins with light. Her emberfire sang louder than ever rising in fierce, rhythmic pulses.

She didn’t understand.

But the mountain did.

The fire recognized her.

And it was carrying her.

The furious descent slowed until she felt something catch her not hands, not claws, but pressure, buoyant and warm, holding her suspended in a pillar of light. She hovered there, weightless, breath trapped in her throat.

Slowly, cautiously, she opened her eyes.

The fire had become transparent no longer molten red, but shimmering gold. She floated inside a vast chamber at the mountain’s core, its walls smooth and curved like the inside of a colossal ribcage. Rivers of light flowed across the stone in vein-like paths, converging at the center of the cavern where something massive loomed in the glow.

A shape.

No more than a shape.

A presence.

Kaelin’s feet touched ground gently. She staggered but did not fall. The fire peeled away from her like mist, receding into the chamber’s veins.

And then she saw it clearly.

The dragon.

Not living.
Not dead.
Suspended.

The creature’s enormous form lay coiled in the heart of the cavern, encased in a shell of translucent crystal that pulsed with inner flame. Its scales were obsidian streaked with gold, each one etched with sigils that glowed like the embers of dying stars. Its wings were folded tight, vast membranes pressed against its body like molten banners. Its head broad, horned, and crowned with fire rested on its claws, as though asleep.

But its chest… its chest still rose and fell.

Slow.

Massive.

Alive.

Kaelin trembled.

The Heartbound.

The last of the First Flame.

The dragon that had nearly destroyed a kingdom and the one her ancestors had sealed beneath the mountain.

The Echo inside her pulsed wildly, as though trying to tear itself free from her ribs and fling itself toward the creature.

She pressed a hand to her chest. “Stop. Just stop.”

The heartbeat only grew louder.

She took a shaky step forward.

The dragon’s eyes vast and shut tight twitched.

Her lungs froze.

“No,” she whispered. “Not awake. Not because of me.”

But the light in the cavern deepened, answering her fear with truth.

It was because of her.

The dragon responded to her presence, her fire, her bloodline. She felt it an ancient tether, a pull woven through centuries, raw and primal and calling her by name without speaking a word.

A whisper slithered across the chamber like a breath sliding over flame.

Emberborn…

The sound came from everywhere. From nowhere. From inside her skull. The same voice that had echoed through the spirit. The same power that had shaken the cavern walls.

But this time, it felt close. Intimate. As though a giant leaned down to speak directly into her soul.

Kaelin’s knees weakened.

“I didn’t come to wake you,” she said, breath trembling. “I won’t be your vessel. I won’t be controlled.”

A low, languid pulse rippled through the dragon’s crystal shell. Light shimmered across its scales.

Then

Its eye slid open.

A single, enormous, golden eye bright as molten dawn fixed on her.

She couldn’t breathe.

The pupil narrowed, tightening to a thin slit that cut through the golden glow. The cavern seemed to shrink beneath the force of that gaze. Her emberfire roared, bursting in her veins like wildfire, trying to answer the dragon’s call.

She staggered back. “No”

You bear my memory.

The voice shook the air, deeper and older than any language she had ever heard. The crystal shell around the dragon cracked hairline fissures glowing white-hot.

You were forged in my flame.

Kaelin clenched her fists. “I don’t belong to you.”

You belong to the fire.

The fissures spread across the shell like lightning bolts.

Stone trembled beneath her feet.

Kaelin backed away. “Stop! You’re going to break free”

I wake only by your hand.

The world blazed white.

Heat erupted outward, a shockwave that slammed into her and sent her skidding across the chamber floor. She hit a pillar, gasping, pain raking across her ribs. The dragon’s shell pulsed again brighter, faster, like a heart preparing to burst.

Kaelin forced herself upright, heart pounding.

“Listen to me!” she shouted. “If you break loose, you’ll burn everything. The mountain. The valley. The kingdoms above. I won’t let you”

Your will cannot contain what you are.

Her voice cracked. “I’m not you!”

The dragon’s eye narrowed.

You are flame.
And flame does not bow.

The crack in the shell split wider with a thunderous boom.

“No!” Kaelin tried to summon her emberfire, to push back the dragon’s awakening. But the fire inside her answered the dragon instead rising, not resisting. Her power slipped from her grasp like water through trembling fingers.

“Stop!” she begged. “You’ll kill us both!”

Better ash…
than a world ruled by shadow.

Her breath stopped.

The Shadow Regent.

“What do you know?” she whispered.

The dragon’s gaze sharpened.

He hunts you. He hunts me. He hunts the flame itself.

The cavern dimmed as if the mountain were holding its breath.

Kaelin’s heart pounded painfully. “Why me?”

Because you are the last vessel capable of awakening me fully… or extinguishing me forever.

The mountain shook with the final word.

Extinguish.

Fear coiled cold and thin beneath her ribs.

The dragon watched her, silent, monstrous, waiting.

Kaelin’s voice came out small. “If I refuse?”

A crackling ripple climbed the dragon’s wings.

Then you die.
He rises.
And the world ends in shadow.

Her stomach twisted.

She turned away, pacing, hands clenched in her hair.

“This isn’t fair,” she whispered. “This can’t be my choice. I can’t decide the fate of the entire world. I’m just”

You are not just anything.
You are mine.
And I will not burn this world if you stand with me.

A shudder tore through her.

Promise?
Threat?
Both?

She spun back toward the dragon. “Why should I trust you?”

The dragon blinked slowly.

I do not ask for trust. Only truth.

The crystal shell glowed hot, cracks spreading.

And the truth is this…
You are already bound to me.
By blood.
By fire.
By destiny sealed before your first breath.

Kaelin’s pulse raced.

She had known the truth somewhere deep, hidden beneath denial and fear. The Echo inside her was not hers it was a shard of the dragon’s fire. A piece of it. A part of its soul.

She had never been separate.

Never been free.

She swallowed hard. “If I free you, the world burns. If I don’t, the Shadow Regent rises. And I die.”

The dragon’s eye darkened.

Not just you.
Everything.

Kaelin pressed a trembling hand to her chest. “There has to be another way.”

The dragon watched her without blinking.

There is.

Her breath stilled.

Join with me.
Not as a vessel.
As an equal.

She stared, stunned. “That’s… impossible.”

Fire reshapes what is impossible.

The ground thrummed beneath her. The fissures in the crystal glowed blindingly bright.

Choose, Emberborn.
Before shadow reaches this mountain.

Kaelin’s heart twisted violently.

She thought of Taren somewhere above, fighting his way through stone and fire searching for her.

She thought of Veyra who believed in her even when Kaelin didn’t believe in herself.

She thought of her parents lost before she could ask them why her blood burned with power she never wanted.

She looked at the dragon.

Its eye glowed like a rising sun.

The last of the First Flame.

The creature that could save or destroy everything.

And it waited for her.

Kaelin stepped forward.

Fear roared through her but she didn’t stop.

She placed her burning palm against the crystal shell.

The dragon inhaled a deep, ancient sound.

The chamber erupted in light.

Fire exploded from the crystal, swirling around her in blinding gold. Her emberfire surged outward, meeting the dragon’s flame in a violent collision that sent shockwaves ripping through the mountain. Her body lifted from the g
round, suspended in the inferno.

The dragon’s voice thundered through her skull:

“Your fire…
and mine…
together.”

Their flames collided

merged

became one.

The mountain screamed.

The world trembled.

And Kaelin’s vision went white as the fire swallowed her whole.
