Chapter 27 THE FLAME UNBOUND
Chapter 27 THE FLAME UNBOUND
The explosion of fire and shadow tore through the Heartfire Vault like a storm.
Emberlyn staggered backward as the force of her own power slammed into her chest. The cavern shook. Molten gold dripped harder from the glowing walls, steam rising as it struck the stone floor. The Heartfire pulsed above its pedestal brighter, hotter like it had awoken fully and recognized its claimant.
Shadows swarmed toward her, twisting into spears, claws, tendrils. They hissed with serpentine whispers as they reached for her skin.
Emberlyn raised her hand.
The dragonmark blazed.
Fire erupted outward golden, consuming, alive. The shadows hit the blast and disintegrated instantly, scattering like ash in the wind.
Ariden shielded his face from the heat. “She’s losing control!”
“No,” Selera hissed, stepping between them and the flame. “She’s learning it.”
But Emberlyn barely heard them.
The world narrowed to flame and heartbeat.
Her heartbeat.
The Heartfire’s heartbeat.
The Regent’s shadow-black heartbeat.
Three rhythms clashing into one violent crescendo.
The Regent moved calmly through the chaos, his cloak rippling like liquid night. Shadows coiled around his fingers, gathering into a spear of pure darkness.
“Your fire is beautiful,” he said, voice echoing with layered tones. “Untamed. Dangerous. Exactly what the Heartfire needs.”
Emberlyn gritted her teeth, raising her sword. “Stay away from me.”
“You misunderstand, Emberlyn.” The Regent lifted the shadow-spear. “I am the only one who can keep you from burning the world to ash.”
He hurled the spear.
Ariden lunged
“ARIDEN, NO!”
just as Emberlyn swung her blade. Fire exploded from the strike, shattering the spear mid-air into fragments of shadow that dissolved before touching the ground.
Ariden hit the stone floor hard, sliding back. Emberlyn spun toward him, heart hammering.
“Don’t jump in front of me!” she shouted, voice cracking.
“I’m not letting him hit you alone!” Ariden pushed himself up, jaw tight, eyes fierce.
“You’ll die,” she snapped.
He didn’t deny it.
Selera dashed toward them, daggers glowing with scorched runes. “Argue later! Move!”
More shadows surged an entire wave rushing like a dark tide. They slammed into the cavern floor, reforming into armored wraiths wielding black-bladed weapons.
Emberlyn stepped forward, no longer afraid.
Let them come.
The first wraith swung. Emberlyn twisted aside, blade cutting through its smoky torso. Golden fire burst from the wound, splitting the creature into ribbons of light.
Three more attacked.
She spun fire trailing her movements her sword carving arcs of molten brilliance. The cavern lit in flashes as shadows died around her.
But controlling the fire felt like gripping lightning.
Every surge of power threatened to spill over into frenzy. Heat scorched her throat, her spine, her palms. Her vision blurred at the edges, overwhelmed by the Heartfire’s pull.
It wanted out.
It wanted everything.
Control it, she told herself fiercely. Don’t let it control you.
But the Regent watched her with cold amusement.
“Struggle all you like,” he murmured, raising his hands. “The moment you touched the flame, your destiny was sealed.”
He slammed his palms together.
The vault trembled.
A river of shadow erupted from the ground, sweeping out toward Ariden and Selera. Selera leapt backward, flipping over a jagged stone. Ariden rolled aside, slicing at the shadow-tide with his moonsteel blade.
But it kept spreading.
Hunting them.
Separating them.
“EMBERLYN!” Ariden yelled. “Don’t let him isolate you!”
She tried to move toward them
but the Heartfire pulsed again.
Hard.
Her vision flared gold. Her knees buckled. Heat flooded her chest so intensely she couldn’t breathe.
The fire wanted to claim her.
Wanted to merge with her.
Wanted to become her.
Her surroundings blurred in molten light. She heard Ariden calling her name, faint and distant. Selera’s voice too, sharp and frantic.
But the Regent’s voice cut through them all.
“Let it in, Emberlyn. You are the vessel. This power was carved for you.”
A wall of shadow surged between Emberlyn and her friends, blocking them out completely.
She was alone with the Regent.
And the fire.
Her dragonmark blazed white-hot, the glow spreading up her arm, across her collarbone, down her ribs. She dropped to one knee, gasping, as the fire roared in her veins.
“Stop fighting it,” the Regent said softly. “The Heartfire does not obey. It consumes.”
Emberlyn clenched her teeth, digging her fingers into the stone floor. “I’m… not… yours.”
“No?” He walked toward her, each step echoing. “Tell me, then when your mother died protecting you from this fate… did you believe she saved you?”
Emberlyn’s breath hitched.
The Regent’s mask tilted. “She didn’t. She delayed the inevitable.”
Fury surged through Emberlyn so violently her vision snapped back into focus.
“Don’t,” she whispered, “speak of her.”
The Regent raised a hand.
Shadows slashed the air
and Emberlyn’s fire erupted like a star being born.
The shockwave blasted the Regent backward, cracking the cavern floor. The vault trembled. Molten gold splashed down the walls. The Heartfire flared so bright the entire world turned white.
But Emberlyn didn’t collapse.
She stood.
Her eyes no longer their normal shade burned gold.
Her hair whipped in a wind of fire.
And the cavern bowed to her power.
The Regent rose slowly, shadows fraying around him. “So the sovereign awakens.”
Emberlyn lifted her sword. Flames raced along the blade’s edge.
“I’m not your sovereign.”
“No,” he said, lifting both hands and summoning a storm of shadows behind him.
“You’re mine to break.”
“Over my dead body.”
They clashed.
Fire and shadow collided in a deafening roar. Emberlyn’s strike carved through the darkness, sending sparks and cinders spiraling. The Regent countered with a ring of shadow-blades that slashed toward her in brutal arcs.
She dodged barely flames bursting from her heels with every step.
The cavern floor cracked beneath them.
The Heartfire swirled violently above, responding to the battle with primal fury.
Ariden and Selera fought desperately behind the wall of shadow trying to reach her, their silhouettes flashing in the firelight.
But this fight this moment belonged to her.
The Regent thrust his hand forward.
A spear of shadow shot toward Emberlyn
She seized it with her bare, burning hand.
Shadow hissed and writhed against her palm, trying to devour her flesh.
Emberlyn gripped harder.
The spear cracked.
Shattered.
Dissolved.
The Regent froze.
Emberlyn stepped forward, golden fire wreathing her entire arm.
“You want a vessel?” she said, voice steady as flame. “Find someone else.”
She slammed her hand into the stone floor.
The fire surged outward, splitting the ground with a blinding flash. The shockwave hurled the Regent across the cavern, smashing him into the molten-lit wall.
For the first time, his mask cracked.
A sliver of pale skin showed beneath it human, but twisted by shadows.
The Regent rose shakily, dark smoke spilling from the mask’s fractures.
“You cannot kill me,” he hissed. “I am the shadow that rises when fire fails.”
“Then let’s find out,” Emberlyn said.
She lifted her sword.
The Heartfire flared.
The final clash ignited
just as the cavern ceiling began to crack.
A deep rumble shook the w
orld.
Selera screamed from behind the shadow wall, “THE VAULT’S COLLAPSING!”
Emberlyn didn’t look away from the Regent.
Let it collapse.
Let it end here.
Her fire surged hot, bright, unstoppable
And she charged.
