Chapter 26 THE VAULT OF RIVEN GOLD

Chapter 26 THE VAULT OF RIVEN GOLD
Dawn never touched the valley below.

Instead, a strange twilight hung over the chasm too dark to be morning, too bright to be night. Emberlyn stared down from the ridge as the molten glow of the Heartfire Vault painted the world in hues of burning gold. The cavern mouth pulsed like a heartbeat beneath the earth, each throb sending ripples of golden light up the cracked stone walls.

The Shadow Regent’s army moved like a living shadow around it.
Dozens of wraithbound soldiers.
Armored figures rising from the smoke.
Hollow-eyed guardians forged of black flame.

This was no battlefield.
This was a ritual ground.

Ariden stepped beside her. “We can’t fight them all head-on.”

“We don’t have to.” Emberlyn tightened her grip on her sword. “We carve a path. Fast and direct.”

Selera snorted softly. “So your plan is to survive chaos long enough to dive into a burning hole in the ground?”

“Basically,” Emberlyn answered.

Selera rolled her shoulders. “Perfect. I thrive in chaos.”

Stormrush crouched behind them, wings half-spread, sensing the tension thickening like smoke. Emberlyn turned to her wyvern, pressing her forehead to the creature’s scaled snout.

“If I fall,” she whispered, “don’t follow me in.”

Stormrush rumbled low in protest.

“I mean it,” Emberlyn murmured. “Protect the others. Protect Ariden.”

The wyvern blinked slowly, nuzzling her once before stepping back.

Ariden watched her. “You think you’re going in alone?”

“If I lose control of the Heartfire”

“You won’t,” he cut in firmly.

“You can’t know that.”

“Yes, I can.” His eyes locked with hers. “Because you’re Emberlyn. And you’ve fought for every inch of your soul. You didn’t survive the fires of Emberfall to become someone else’s weapon.”

Her throat tightened. She looked away before the emotion could take shape.

Selera whistled sharply. “Hate to interrupt the bonding moment, but the shadows are repositioning. They’ve felt us.”

She was right.

Below, wraithbound soldiers shifted, heads snapping toward the ridge. Their ember-red eyes gleamed like coals.

Ariden drew his blade. “On your word.”

Emberlyn inhaled deeply, letting the ache, the fear, and the fire steady her bones.

“Now.”

Stormrush leapt first a flash of silver-blue wings diving toward the horde. Emberfang and Ironwind followed, screeching battle cries that echoed across the valley.

Shadow archers raised their bows.

“Down!” Emberlyn yelled.

Stormrush folded her wings, plummeting. Arrows sliced through the air above them. Emberlyn felt the rush of wind as one darted past her cheek, grazing her skin with icy death.

They landed hard, stone cracking under Stormrush’s talons.

The first wraith charged.

Emberlyn swung.

Her blade cleaved through shadow and steel no blood spilled, but the creature burst apart like smoke scattered by wind.

Three more lunged.

Ariden dropped from his wyvern mid-air, landing between Emberlyn and the wraiths. His blade gleamed with moonsteel, cutting through two in a single arc. Selera slid beneath another, slicing at its smoky joints before finishing it with a dagger to its helm.

But the shadows kept coming.

A wave of them.

Ten.
Twenty.
More.

“Straight for the cavern!” Emberlyn called.

They fought while running blades flashing, shadows bursting, wyverns swooping above to scatter enemy lines.

But the closer they got to the Heartfire Vault, the more the ground trembled beneath their feet.

The Heartfire pulsed again.

This time the world answered.

A golden shockwave blasted outward, flattening several wraiths and shaking the cavern walls. Emberlyn staggered but didn’t fall.

Instead, her dragonmark seared open, glowing like molten metal in her skin.

Ariden grabbed her shoulder. “Emberlyn!”

“I can feel it,” she gasped. “The Regent… he’s already inside.”

Selera swore under her breath. “Then we sprint.”

Together they surged forward, cutting through the last line of shadowguards. A thunderous roar echoed from within the cavern ancient, primal, filled with hunger.

The vault entrance loomed ahead, radiant and terrifying.

As they crossed the threshold, heat slammed into them like a tidal wave. Emberlyn shielded her face, sweating instantly, her lungs burning with every breath.

The cavern was colossal.

Walls of molten gold dripped like blazing waterfalls. The floor shimmered with veins of crystallized light. At the far end, towering like a god forged from fire, stood a stone pedestal carved with ancient runes.

Upon it

A sphere of pure golden flame floated, pulsing rhythmically.

The Heartfire.

Alive.

Awake.

And standing before it, cloaked in black flame and crowned with shadow

The Regent.

He turned slowly, his obsidian mask reflecting the vault’s burning light.

“You came,” he said, his voice echoing like two tones speaking as one. “Just as destiny wrote.”

Emberlyn stepped forward, chest heaving, her dragonmark blazing so bright it illuminated the cavern.

“Destiny didn’t bring me here,” she said coldly. “You did.”

The Regent inclined his head. “True. I have shaped your every step. Your mother’s fall. Kaelor’s manipulation. The awakening of your power. All threads woven for this moment.”

Ariden snarled. “You’re insane.”

“Insane?” The Regent’s laughter echoed through the chamber. “No. Enlightened. For centuries, the Heartfire has slept waiting for a vessel strong enough to shape it. Now…”

His shadowed gaze slid to Emberlyn.

“…it has found her.”

Selera tightened her grip on her daggers. “Over my dead”

“Selera,” Emberlyn said quietly. “Stay back.”

“What? No”

“This is between me and him.”

The Heartfire pulsed again brighter, hotter as if responding to her voice.

The Regent extended a hand. “Come, Emberlyn. Touch the flame. Become the sovereign destiny forged you to be.”

Every instinct screamed at her.
Every memory burned against her skin.
Her mother’s sacrifice.
Her clan’s fall.
Kaelor’s dying confession.
Her own fear of becoming nothing more than fire held in someone else’s fist.

Emberlyn lifted her sword.

“I am done being shaped by others.”

She stepped forward, flames rippling at her feet. The cavern roared as the Heartfire reacted reaching for her, calling to her.

The Regent’s mask tilted with dark amusement. “Then show me.”

Shadows surged from his cloak.

Ariden darted in fro
nt of her. “Stay behind me!”

Emberlyn shoved him away. “Not this time.”

Shadows spiraled toward her.

Fire erupted from her dragonmark.

And the world exploded into battle.
