Chapter 172 The Threat Returns
Elara's POV
Mother Moonstone had one day to live. My sister Lily had three. My daughter had seven.
And the Western Coalition wanted war.
"They're assembled at our border," Thorne reported. "Fifty thousand soldiers. Siege weapons. Dark mages. All waiting."
"For what?" Drakon demanded.
"For you to surrender Aurora. Or they attack."
"Never," I said. "They'll have to kill us first."
A herald arrived carrying the Coalition's official declaration. I read it aloud:
"To the False Queen Elara and the Dragon Tyrant:
Your unity government is an abomination. Humans were never meant to mix with monsters. Your daughter Aurora is proof of this unnatural corruption.
We demand:
1\. Immediate dissolution of all unity laws
2.Separation of magical and human populations
3.Surrender of Aurora Moonfire for containment and study
4.Abdication of both thrones
You have seven days to comply. Or we destroy everything you've built.
\- The Pure Human Coalition"
I crumpled the letter. "They want to cage our daughter like an animal. Study her like a specimen."
"Over my dead body," Drakon growled. Scales appeared on his arms. His control slipping with rage.
"That's exactly what they're hoping for," I said. "They want us emotional. Reckless. Making mistakes."
"Then what do we do?"
"We show them we're not afraid." I stood. "Call every ally. Every kingdom we've helped. Everyone who believes in unity. We make them see they're outnumbered."
But as messengers went out, responses came back. Disappointing ones.
The Eastern Coalition couldn't help. Still recovering from the Void attack.
The Northern Ice Clans were dealing with their own crisis.
The Southern reformed kingdoms sent sympathies but no soldiers.
"We're alone," Thorne said grimly. "Twenty-five thousand against fifty thousand."
"We've faced worse odds," Drakon said. But even he sounded uncertain.
That evening, I found Aurora in her room. Countdown glowing on her forehead: 6 days, 18 hours.
"Mama? Are the bad people coming for me?"
I couldn't lie to her. "Yes. But we won't let them have you."
"What if fighting them gets people killed? What if it's my fault?"
"Hey." I knelt beside her. "None of this is your fault. You didn't ask to be born special. You didn't choose to have power. You're just a little girl. And we protect little girls. Always."
"Even if it means war?"
"Even then."
Aurora hugged me tight. "I don't want anyone to die for me."
"And I don't want anyone to take you. So we fight. Together."
But that night, Mother Moonstone collapsed. Her countdown hit zero.
"No!" I caught her. "Healers! NOW!"
They rushed in but stopped. Stared.
Mother's body was changing. Void corruption spreading.
"It's begun," she gasped. "My twin... she's claiming me... can't fight much longer..."
"Yes, you can!" I grabbed her hands. "You're the strongest woman I know! FIGHT!"
She screamed. Half her body went void-black. Half stayed normal.
Just like Aurora. Caught between light and dark.
"Elara..." Mother's voice changed. Became dual. Her voice and her twin's. "Tell Aurora... tell her I love... NO! Get out of my body! This is MINE!"
She was fighting herself. Fighting her void twin.
And losing.
"Bind her!" Chronax commanded. "Before the void takes full control!"
Guards wrapped Mother in magical chains. She thrashed. Screamed.
"I'm sorry," I sobbed. "I'm so sorry, Mama."
"Not... your fault..." Mother's eyes flickered. Normal then void-red. "Save... Lily... Save... Aurora..."
Then her eyes went fully void.
My mother was gone. Taken. Possessed.
The void-Helena stood using Mother's body. Smiled with Mother's face.
"Hello, niece. Your mother says hello. From deep inside where I've trapped her consciousness." She laughed. "Don't worry. She can see everything. Feel everything. She just can't control anything."
"Give her back!" I threw ice magic.
Void-Helena absorbed it. "No, I don't think I will. I'm rather enjoying this body. And in three days, I'll take Lily's too. Then Aurora's. Then YOURS."
"We'll stop you."
"You can't. Because in four days, the Western Coalition attacks. You'll be too busy fighting them to protect your family. Perfectly planned, really."
She vanished through a void portal.
Leaving us with one crisis becoming two.
Mother possessed. War coming. Countdowns ticking.
"We need allies," Drakon said desperately. "Real allies. Now."
"Who? Everyone refused!"
Then a horn sounded. Not a battle horn. A greeting horn.
We rushed to the walls.
Below, an army had arrived. But not the Western Coalition.
Ships filled the harbor. Dragons filled the sky. Creatures of every type gathering.
Queen Thalassa stood at the front. "You called for help. We came."
"But you said you couldn't..."
"We said we were recovering. We didn't say we'd abandon family." She gestured to the massive force behind her. "The Eastern Coalition stands with you. All of us."
More arrived. Ice clans from the north. Reformed southern kingdoms. Even some western kingdoms who'd secretly opposed the Coalition.
"We won't let them destroy unity," one western queen said. "Or threaten your daughter. We stand together."
By dawn, we had seventy-five thousand allied forces.
We outnumbered the Coalition.
But I couldn't celebrate. Because Mother was still possessed. Lily's countdown read 2 days, 14 hours. And Aurora's power was manifesting in 6 days.
"The Coalition will see our numbers and retreat," Drakon predicted. "They won't fight when outnumbered."
He was right. By noon, scouts reported the Coalition forces withdrawing.
"We won!" people celebrated. "Without even fighting!"
But I knew better.
"This was a distraction," I told Drakon quietly. "Get us focused on the Coalition while the real threat, void-Helena moves freely."
"Then we go after her. End this."
"How? She's using Mother's body. We can't hurt her without hurting Mother."
"Then we find another way. Like always."
But that night, void-Helena returned. With an army.
Not human. Not magical. Void creatures. Thousands of them.
"Your allies can't help with this," she announced. "Void creatures can't be killed by normal means. And I have infinite numbers. So here's my offer: give me Aurora willingly, and I'll release your mother. Refuse, and I destroy everyone you love. You have one hour to decide."
She vanished again.
Leaving us with an impossible choice.
Sacrifice Aurora to save Mother.
Or fight void creatures we couldn't kill and lose everyone anyway.
"There has to be a third option," I said desperately.
"There is," a voice said behind us.
We turned.
Seraphina, the original Void Empress, had returned.
"Give me Aurora," she said. "Let me take her somewhere the void can't reach. Somewhere safe. While you fight here."
"Absolutely not," Drakon growled. "We're not giving her to anyone."
"Even to save her?" Seraphina looked sad. "Because void-Helena is right. You can't fight infinite void creatures AND protect Aurora. Something has to give."
I looked at my daughter. Then at the void army gathering. Then at my possessed mother.
Every choice led to loss.
Every path led to heartbreak.
"One hour," Seraphina said. "Then the void attacks. Decide wisely."
The countdown ticked.
And I had no idea what to do.
