Chapter 62: Hiding Truth

The sunlight streamed weakly through the heavy curtains of Lyra’s room, casting long, uneven shadows across the walls. The once vibrant glow of the castle seemed dim, weighed down by the tension hanging in the air. King Aldric sat by his daughter’s bedside, his broad shoulders slumped in a way that betrayed his weariness. His hand rested gently over hers, his calloused fingers trembling slightly as he watched her pale face.

Lyra stirred, her lashes fluttering against her cheeks before her eyes slowly opened. The confusion in her gaze was immediate, her brow furrowing as she tried to focus on the figure sitting beside her.

“Father?” Her voice was soft, weak, as though it took all her strength just to form the word.

Aldric’s heart ached at the sound of it. He leaned closer, his deep voice low and filled with concern. “I’m here, Lyra. You’re safe.”

Her fingers twitched beneath his, and for a moment, relief flickered in his chest. But then her eyes clouded with something darker, something that made his breath catch.

“I... I saw something,” she murmured, her voice trembling. “Flashes. Faces. Blood.” She paused, her breathing uneven. “A battlefield. And... him.”

Aldric stiffened, his hand instinctively tightening around hers. His pulse quickened, but he forced himself to remain calm, his expression neutral. “What do you mean, Lyra? Who did you see?”

Her gaze locked onto his, and for a brief moment, she looked like the little girl he used to cradle in his arms, the one who would come running to him with scraped knees and wide, tear-filled eyes. But now, her eyes were filled with something far more haunting.

“I don’t know,” she admitted, her voice breaking. “It’s all blurry. But I felt it, Father. I felt the fear, the rage... and him. Kaelen.”

His name hung in the air like a curse, and Aldric’s chest tightened painfully. He had hoped and prayed that she would never remember. That the life he had built for her, the lies he had told to protect her, would shield her from the truth. But it seemed fate was determined to unravel everything.

“Lyra,” Aldric began, his voice steady but laced with sorrow. “You’ve been through so much. Your mind is playing tricks on you. Rest now. We’ll talk later.”

“No!” Her outburst startled him, her weak frame trembling as she pushed herself upright. The determination in her eyes was fierce, cutting through her exhaustion. “Don’t lie to me, Father. I know what I saw. I know there’s something you’re not telling me.”

“Lyra, please….”

“Stop!” Her voice cracked, tears pooling in her eyes. “I can’t do this anymore. I can’t keep pretending that everything is fine when it’s not. Those visions... they felt real. Too real.”

Aldric’s heart broke at the sight of her pain. He reached for her, but she pulled back, her tears spilling over. “You’re hiding something from me,” she accused, her voice trembling. “Why? Why won’t you tell me the truth?”

The weight of her words crushed him. How could he explain? How could he tell her that he had taken her memories, erased pieces of her past, to protect her from the horrors she had faced? How could he admit that the man she spoke of, Kaelen, was once more than a name to her?

“Lyra,” he said softly, his voice cracking under the strain. “There are things... things I did to protect you. To keep you safe.”

Her eyes narrowed, her hands balling into fists. “Protect me from what? From Kaelen? From the truth? Tell me, Father. Who am I? What are you so afraid of?”

The room seemed to close in around him. Aldric struggled to breathe, his own memories clawing their way to the surface. The battlefield, the screams, the betrayal. And Lyra, standing there with fire in her eyes, not as his daughter, but as a warrior. As Kaelen’s equal.

“You’re my daughter,” he said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. “And that’s all that matters.”

Lyra’s shoulders slumped, her frustration giving way to exhaustion. “That’s not enough,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “I need to know who I am. I need to understand why these visions won’t leave me alone.”

Aldric swallowed hard, his mind racing. He couldn’t tell her everything not yet. But he couldn’t bear to see her like this, trapped between the present and a past she couldn’t remember.

“There was a war,” he began cautiously, his gaze fixed on the floor. “Between the dragons and the vampires. It was long before your time, Lyra. A conflict that brought nothing but pain and destruction.”

She listened intently, her breathing shallow as she hung onto his every word.

“Kaelen...” He hesitated, his jaw tightening. “He was part of that war. And so was I. The vampires sought power, control. And we... we fought to protect our people.”

Lyra’s eyes searched his face, her expression a mixture of confusion and fear. “What does this have to do with me?”

Aldric hesitated, his hands trembling as he clenched them into fists. “You were caught in the middle of it. You were young, Lyra, but you were... brave. Too brave for your own good.”

Her brow furrowed, her lips quivering as she tried to piece together the fragments of his story. “What happened?”

He closed his eyes, his voice filled with regret. “You were... hurt. I couldn’t let you carry that pain, that burden. So I made a choice. I took it away.”

Lyra’s breath hitched, her eyes widening in disbelief. “You erased my memories?”

Aldric’s silence was all the confirmation she needed. Her chest heaved as she struggled to process his words, the weight of his confession threatening to crush her.

“How could you?” she whispered, her voice breaking. “How could you take that from me?”

“I did it to protect you,” he said desperately, his voice cracking. “You were just a child, Lyra. You didn’t deserve to carry that pain. I thought... I thought I was doing the right thing.”

Her tears fell freely now, her body trembling with the force of her emotions. “But it wasn’t your choice to make,” she said, her voice rising. “You took away a part of me, a part of who I am.”

Aldric reached for her, his own tears streaming down his face. “I’m sorry, Lyra. I’m so sorry. I only wanted to keep you safe.”

She shook her head, pulling away from him. “I don’t even know who I am anymore,” she whispered, her voice hollow. “I don’t know what’s real.”

The silence that followed was deafening, the weight of their emotions filling the room. Aldric felt his heart shatter as he watched his daughter crumble before him, the pain in her eyes a reflection of his own.

But before he could say anything, Lyra’s body stiffened, her eyes widening in shock. She clutched her head, a sharp cry escaping her lips as she collapsed onto the bed.

“Lyra!” Aldric shouted, his voice filled with panic. He caught her as she fell, his arms wrapping around her trembling form.

Her eyes fluttered shut, her breathing shallow as she slipped into unconsciousness. Aldric held her close, his heart pounding in his chest.

As he stared down at his daughter, a single thought consumed him: he had to protect her, no matter the cost.

But deep down, he knew that the past he had tried so desperately to bury was clawing its way back. And

this time, there would be no escaping it.
