Chapter 61: Blood

King Aldric paced restlessly in the dimly lit chamber, his thoughts a tangled mess of confusion and dread. His gaze was drawn to his daughter, Lyra, standing near the hearth, her back to him. She was silent, her posture stiff, as if she could feel the weight of his gaze upon her. Aldric couldn’t help but wonder what she was thinking, what was going through her mind. It had been weeks since she had returned from the battlefield, and Lyra had been distant withdrawn, even. The once-confident warrior was now more fragile than ever, as if something deep inside her had shifted.

“Lyra,” he called softly, his voice tinged with worry.

She turned slowly, her eyes searching his face. “Yes, Father?”

Aldric felt a pang in his chest at the hollow look in her eyes. There was a part of her that was missing, as if something vital had been taken from her. And he feared that something wasn’t just gone it was lost.

“I don’t understand,” he began, his voice rough. “You’ve been so distant. You’ve been so... changed since you returned. What happened out there? What is it that you’re not telling me?”

Lyra’s brow furrowed, a flicker of confusion crossing her face. “What do you mean?” she asked, her tone tinged with uncertainty. “I’m fine, Father.”

“No, you’re not,” Aldric insisted, stepping closer to her. “There’s something wrong. I can see it in your eyes, in the way you speak. I know you better than anyone, Lyra. What is it that’s haunting you?”

Lyra took a step back, as if she were trying to create distance between them. She rubbed her temples as though a headache was forming. Her lips parted, but no words came out.

“Lyra?” Aldric pressed, his heart thudding in his chest.

Her eyes widened, and for a split second, Aldric saw something terrible and unfamiliar in her gaze. A brief flash of recognition passed over her face, but it was gone in the next instant.

“I…” she trailed off, shaking her head. “I don’t know. I just… I keep seeing things. I keep seeing… images. Blurry memories.”

Aldric’s breath hitched in his throat. His heart lurched. He had feared this moment for so long.

“What kind of memories?” he asked, his voice strained.

Lyra closed her eyes, her hands trembling at her sides. “I don’t know… They’re like pieces of a puzzle that don’t fit. Faces, battles, fire, blood. I keep seeing someone, someone I don’t recognize, but I know them. I know them.”

Aldric took a step forward, reaching out to her. “What do you see, Lyra?”

Her eyes snapped open, panic flashing across her face. “A man. A man with eyes like the darkest night. And… and we’re fighting together. On the battlefield. But it’s not our kingdom. It’s not the dragon’s realm.” She paused, struggling to breathe as her words became strained.

Aldric felt a chill run down his spine. This was not possible. He had buried the truth for so long, hoping it would stay buried. But now, it seemed as though the past was clawing its way to the surface, threatening to destroy everything.

“Lyra, stop,” Aldric said, his voice shaking with fear. “You’re not seeing the truth. These are just…..”

“No!” Lyra interrupted, her voice sharp and desperate. “No, it’s real. I was there. I was fighting. But… not with the dragons. I was fighting alongside him. With the vampires.”

Aldric froze, his blood running cold.

“No,” he whispered, taking a step back. “That’s impossible.”

But Lyra wasn’t listening. She seemed lost in the vision, her hand gripping her forehead as if trying to hold the images at bay. She was swaying on her feet, her body trembling with the force of the memories flooding her mind.

“Father, please,” Lyra gasped, her voice filled with terror. “I don’t understand. Why am I seeing this? Why do I feel like I’ve done something… terrible? Why am I connected to him?”

Aldric’s heart twisted in agony as he watched his daughter, so broken and vulnerable. The fear in her eyes was like a knife to his soul. He had never wanted her to remember the past, to uncover the dark truth of what had happened between the dragons and the vampires.

“Lyra…” Aldric whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “Please, don’t do this to yourself. You were never meant to remember. You were never meant to know the truth.”

But Lyra wasn’t listening. She was gasping for breath, her chest heaving with each painful inhale. “I can’t breathe, Father. It’s too much. I don’t know who I am anymore.”

Aldric rushed forward, his arms going around her to steady her as she stumbled. She felt so small in his arms, so fragile, and it tore at his heart. “Lyra, you don’t have to remember. You don’t need to carry this burden. You’re not meant to carry this weight.”

But the words did little to calm her. She was shaking violently now, her body wracked with sobs as the memories continued to crash into her.

“Who was he?” Lyra gasped, her voice breaking with the weight of her words. “Who was the man I fought with? Why was I on the other side?”

Aldric’s throat tightened, and for a moment, he was silent. The truth weighed heavily on him, suffocating him. He couldn’t tell her. He couldn’t let her know. Not like this.

But before he could say anything more, Lyra’s knees buckled, and she collapsed into his arms, her body going limp.

“Lyra!” Aldric cried, his heart pounding in his chest as he caught her before she could fall to the floor. He gently laid her down on the ground, his hands trembling as he checked for signs of life.

Her breathing was shallow, and her face was pale, drenched with sweat.

“Please, Lyra,” Aldric whispered, his voice desperate. “Wake up. Please, don’t scare me like this .”

He knew this moment was inevitable, that the past had come to claim its due, but seeing his daughter like this, so vulnerable and broken, shattered him.

Tears welled in his eyes, but he didn’t allow them to fall. Not yet. He needed her to wake up. He needed her to remember that she was still his daughter, still the warrior who had always fought for the kingdom.

But as he gazed down at her, his mind was clouded with the fear of what would happen when she remembered everything.

Would she hate him for keeping the truth from her? Would she hate him for the lies, the secrets, the burden he had placed on her shoulders?

The room was silent except for the sound of Lyra’s labored breathing, and Aldric’s heart pounded in his chest, knowing that the storm was not over yet.

As the seconds ticked by, Aldric’s thoughts were in a pool of terror and regret. His daughter was slipping away, and he was powerless to stop it.

But one thing was certain. Whatever is going to happen next,

he would protect her no matter the cost.
