Chapter 28: Shadow of Revenge

Ricardo and Sofia return to headquarters with Salvatore in tow, wrapping up a long, risky night. On the way, the atmosphere in the car was tense yet not entirely dark. There was a strange togetherness between them, like a sliver of calm before the next storm.

“You know, Giovanni won't stop,” Salvatore broke the silence. “People like him don't give up that easily.”

“I know,” Ricardo replied coldly while keeping his focus on driving. “But now he's under our control. We have the upper hand for the first time.”

In the backseat, Sofia was silent, her eyes staring out the window. The events of the night kept replaying in her mind. Her bravery, though fueled by fear, had saved them, but she also knew it was taking her deeper and deeper into Ricardo's world of danger.

Upon arrival at the base, Giovanni is thrown into a cramped room reinforced with steel. Ricardo made sure he had no opening to escape.

“You think this will stop me?” Giovanni chuckled, though his breathing sounded laboured after the battle. “I'm more than just a person. I am a symbol. My people will come for me.”

Ricardo just stared coldly. “Perhaps. But they won't get here before I finish what I started.”

Giovanni grinned, showing his teeth. “You're not strong enough to destroy me, Ricardo. And you know it.”

Ricardo exited the room without another word, locking the door behind him.

Iofia sat on the sofa in the main sitting room with a warm cup of tea. Ricardo entered and sat before her, looking at her as if searching for the right words to start a conversation.

“You shouldn't have been there last night,” he finally says, his tone softer than before.

Sofia shrugged her shoulders. “And you can't control everything, Ricardo. I know the risks.”

“But you almost died,” Ricardo countered, his voice rising slightly before he composed himself. “I didn't want to see that happen. You have no idea how precious you are.”

Sofia looked directly into his eyes. “You can't protect me from everything. I know this world isn't my place, but I'm here now. I choose to stay.”

Ricardo is silent, and his expression is hard to read. Finally, he leaned back in his chair, taking a long breath. “Then, we should make some rules. I won't lose control because of my emotions, Sofia. This world leaves no room for weakness.”

“Then stop thinking of me as a weakness,” Sofia replied calmly but sharply. “I can be your strength if you let me.”

The next morning, Ricardo calls his team for a strategic meeting. With Giovanni under their control, the team's next focus is strengthening their position and attacking Giovanni's supporters before they can gather.

“Giovanni has many allies,” Salvatore warned, pointing at the large map on the table. “We must act quickly before they rerealizee's captured.”

Ricardo nodded. “We'll start with the primary target. Sofia, I need you to stay at the base. It's going to get more dangerous.”

Sofia approached him, looking at him sternly. “I won't stand in the way of your plans, but don't ask me to sit still. Give me something to do.”

Ricardo understood that arguing would only make things worse. Finally, he assigned her the task of helping oversee communications at the base and ensuring their lines remained secure.

Sofia stands on the balcony at night, looking up at the star-filled night sky. Behind her, Ricardo approaches, bringing her a glass of wine.

“Do you regret coming here?” Ricardo asked softly.

Sofia looked at him, their eyes meeting in silence. “No, I don't. I was just wondering how it all ended.”

Ricardo smiled slightly despite the sadness in his eyes. “I'm wondering, too. But I know one thing: I won't let you get hurt.”

That night, they shared a rare moment amidst the chaos, a moment of intimacy and unspoken promises. Outside, the world is bringing new threats that will test them further.

***

The quiet of the night passed quickly, replaced by the hustle and bustle of preparations at Ricardo's base. His team ensured weapons, communications, and plans went off without a hitch. Sofia remained inside the monitoring room, her eyes glued to the screen displaying a digital map of the enemy territory. She's no strategist but understands how important information is in this war.

Ricardo and Salvatore stood before the same screen, reviewing the final details.

“Giovanni has two main warehouses that we know of,” Salvatore said, pointing to locations on the map. “One is a weapons distribution center, the other is where they keep documents and cash. We need to hit both at the same time to incapacitate them.”

“What about our men? We don't have enough troops to attack two locations at once,” Ricardo asked sternly.

“If we break up their forces first, it's possible. But we have to gamble,” Salvatore answered carefully.

Sofia, listening from the corner of the room, finally spoke up. “Why not create a distraction? If they focus on one false threat, you can attack other places without much resistance.”

Ricardo turned to her, slightly surprised. “Do you have any idea how to create that distraction?”

Sofia shrugged. “I know quite a bit about technology. I could create a false signal or make them believe you're somewhere else.”

Salvatore chuckled. “This woman has a brain too, Ricardo.”

Ricardo nodded slowly. “Okay. We'll try your idea. But you stay here, Sofia. I don't want you involved in any more of this.”

As Ricardo and his team prepared to leave, Sofia felt an uneasiness she couldn't ignore. She knew Ricardo had experience in this world, but her fear of losing him kept haunting her.

“Ricardo,” she called before he left.

Ricardo stopped in the doorway, turning to her. “What's wrong?”

“Be careful,” Sofia said quietly, her voice almost drowned out by the noise around them.

Ricardo stepped closer, cupping her face with both hands. “I'm always careful. And I'll come back to you, Sofia. That's a promise.”

Sofia looked up at him, trying to believe in his words, though a sense of anxiety still gripped her heart.

The Attack Begins

Ricardo and his team moved quickly towards the first warehouse, using Sofia's information to evade the heavy guard. On the other side of the city, Salvatore led a small team to launch the distraction Sofia designed—a small explosion that sparked Giovanni's panic.

At the warehouse, Ricardo makes a silent but deadly entrance. The surprise attack takes Giovanni's men guarding the place aback. Gunfire echoes in the room, and tensions run high as Ricardo finally reaches the main office.

Inside, he finds more than he bargained for-secret documents that reveal treachery among Giovanni's allies. Ricardo realizes that this war is bigger than he thought it would be.

Meanwhile, back at the base, Sofia receives a suspicious message over their secure communication line. The message appears to be from Giovanni, but the content is strange, ass if someone is trying to warn her. Sofi quickly analyses the message and finds a pattern suggesting that one of Ricardo's men may have betrayed him.

“No way,” she muttered. “Who would do this?”

However, before she could tell Ricardo, their communication was interrupted by a loud popping sound.

Ricardo returned to the base only to find chaos. The rest of Giovanni's men had launched a counterattack and managed to infiltrate outside the base's perimeter.

Sofia hides in the monitoring room, trying to remain calm while giving directions to the defence team over the radio. But when the door to the room opens with a bang, she finds herself face-to-face with one of the guards she recognizes as a traitor.

“Sofia,” the man said in a sly voice, ”you made this easier than I thought.”

However, before he could proceed, Sofia grabbed the small pistol she had hidden and pointed it at the man.

“Don't even try,” Sofia warned, though her hands were trembling slightly.

Ricardo arrived just in time, shooting the guard before he could move.

“Sofia!” Ricardo called out to her, running over to her.

Sofia fell into his arms, trembling but safe. “We were betrayed,” she whispered.

Ricardo nodded, his eyes full of pent-up anger. “I know. And now, I'm going to make sure this ends.”

Amidst the remnants of the attack, Ricardo stood with Sofia at his side, their gazes full of determination. With enemies lurking and betrayal among them, this war was far from over. But one thing is clear-they will not stop until they reclaim full control of their destiny.
