Chapter 54 Sick

Chapter 54 Sick
Erin's POV:

Kingsley frowned, looking innocent. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm moving out of the castle today! We're done."

Kingsley's face immediately darkened.

"If you move out, what about Harrison?"

Mentioning Harrison, I hesitated.

Harrison was the child I risked my life to bring into this world. For five years, Harrison had been with me, counting the time he was in my belly.

But I really couldn't make myself become a mistress, a homewrecker who destroys other people's relationships.

"You won't let me take Harrison anyway. He's safer with you than with me. I'll just move out by myself."

My resolute attitude probably angered him. Kingsley furiously punched the steering wheel.

"It's already dark. It's too dangerous for you to get out here. If you want to move out, you need to go back to the castle to pack your things and say goodbye to Harrison."

Kingsley made sense, but I didn't want to stay in the same space with him anymore.

Not just because of my anger toward him, but because my heart was in pain.

I loved Kingsley!

That's why his treatment of me hurt so much.

"I don't want to! Being in the same car with you makes me sick!"

Kingsley finally lost his patience. With disappointment and suppressed anger on his face, he immediately told the driver to pull over.

As soon as the car stopped, I pushed open the door and got out.

Just as I steadied myself, I turned around and the car drove away...

I watched the speeding car's taillights, my nose suddenly stinging.

Kingsley left just like that, without any reluctance.

I was the one who wanted to get out. I was the one who called him disgusting.

I didn't understand why I was sad. This should have been the result I wanted.

I rubbed my face and laughed mockingly at myself.

I couldn't let my feelings for Kingsley run wild anymore!

There were drunk men making noise on the street, and people gathered together smoking weed.

I couldn't help but quicken my pace. This place was too chaotic!

I heard those addicts talking about my body. My heart was racing.

I almost started running. I didn't dare look back, but someone grabbed my arm forcefully.

I screamed in fright, "Get away!"

"Erin! It's me!" I heard a familiar voice.

I turned around and saw Kai.

I was stunned, wondering why he was here.

"Get in the car. I'll take you back. It's too chaotic here."

I hesitated, wondering whether I should go with him.

Kai was now Gloria's fiancé. It wasn't appropriate for us to be alone together.

"Erin, it's not safe for a woman to be here alone."

"Thank you then." I finally got in the car with Kai.

Kai started the car, his tone carrying some annoyance.

"I heard the Perez family went to cause you trouble today. I wanted to come earlier to stop them, but there was traffic. I didn't expect to be too late."

He paused and added.

"When I passed by the equestrian club just now, I saw the club owner's car. I thought you were together. How come you're alone here?"

Mentioning Kingsley, I felt sad and angry again. I pressed my lips together and said nothing.

I didn't want to discuss Kingsley with other people.

Kai seemed to notice my silence and didn't ask more. Instead, he sighed.

"Speaking of which, I still can't believe Gloria has become like this. Before, she was always gentle and obedient in front of me."

Hearing this, I couldn't help but sneer.

"She's always been like this. I told you many times before how she hurt me at home, but you didn't believe me at all."

Back then, Kai would comfort me and criticize Gloria in front of me. I thought he believed me, but it turned out he was just humoring me.

Kai's face immediately became awkward.

"You're right. I was fooled by her disguise back then. Now that I think about it, the things she did had already shown cracks."

When Kai said this, I didn't respond. What was the point of saying this now?

The damage Gloria caused me already existed.

Now that I think about it, only two people were never fooled by Gloria's facade: my brother and Kingsley.

My brother was because he had seen the harm Mom suffered.

And Kingsley was the only one who could see through Gloria at first glance.

"Erin? What are you thinking about?"

Kai's voice brought me back to reality.

I came to my senses and shook my head. "Nothing."

Kai glanced at me, hesitated, then suddenly said.

"Actually... I kind of regret getting engaged to Gloria."

I frowned and turned to look at him, somewhat surprised.

"What did you say? You're already engaged. Isn't it too late to say you regret it now?"

Kai's grip on the steering wheel tightened, his eyes showing some complexity.

"I agreed to get engaged to her because... for these five years, I've been treating her as your substitute."

"Substitute?"

I could hardly believe my ears.

"Yes."

Kai's voice became deeper.

"After you left home, I missed you so much. Gloria would sometimes deliberately imitate you, your way of speaking, the things you liked. She learned everything from you. I was fooled. I thought I had fallen in love with her. We started dating, then your father proposed engagement, and I agreed. But after seeing you, I realized who I really liked."

He turned to look at me, his eyes carrying a hint of expectation.

"Erin, I know it's selfish of me to say this now, but I really haven't forgotten you. All these years, I've always..."

"Kai."

I interrupted him, my tone firm.

"It's impossible between us. The past is long gone. I just want to take good care of Harrison and live my own life."

My feelings for Kai were over. Five years ago we did love each other deeply, but now I had no romantic feelings for him whatsoever.

Especially since he was engaged to Gloria now. Although I despised Gloria, I didn't want to be called a homewrecker who destroyed her own sister's engagement.

What was wrong with today? Kingsley wanted me to be his mistress, and Kai wanted me to be a homewrecker!

What did they think I was?

Was I just a woman they could toy with casually?

I wanted him to stop the car, but thinking about the chaotic situation on the streets, I held back.

My rejection made Kai fall silent. He was probably unhappy.

But so what?

He was the one who saw me as a casual woman first, the one who made me unhappy first.

The car soon arrived at the castle entrance. I got out without hesitation.

"Thank you for driving me back." I still politely thanked him.

"Erin, if you change your mind, you can find me anytime. I'll always wait for you!" Kai called out to me, speaking passionately.

I felt my stomach churning. I gave him the middle finger, then turned and left under his stunned gaze.

But after just a few steps, I stopped. I saw Kingsley standing by the fountain, watching me.
