Chapter 49 My Husband

Chapter 49 My Husband
In that intimate ambiance, it broke because her stomach grumbled. He moved slightly back and sat down. He looked at her face, who tried to express her dissatisfaction but failed miserably because her face condition as it felt stiff.

“Are you not going to order me some food, husband?” she demanded.

“Sure, love. Porridge? He teased with a smirk.

“No…” she dragged the no with a little scrunch on the face like she hated the idea of eating porridge. “Steak and risotto,” she told him proudly.

“Very Italian when we’re not in Italy,” he commented, clearly throwing shade. He remembered the first time she cooked or baked. Muffins, her taste was very American then. But now, she gradually enjoyed Italian more than her usual taste buds. She thought the food was cleaner than where she grew up.

“Of course, my husband is a proud Italian,” she replied with a smug look on her face. She lifted her hand in front of him. “Go, go.”

“You’re a pro now, demanding me here and there.” She ignored his sharp eyes as she was not affected by them anymore.

“Of course, I have you here.” Lyla showed him her palm, and he raised an eyebrow. “In my hand,” she continued casually. “Right?”

“Whatever makes you feel better, cicci,” he responded, the corner of his lips slightly curved. Zeno got up from the bed and told her he would order the food to be brought up to their room. He left the room as he had to meet Mr. Stall. So, as he went to the meeting, he would stop by the restaurant to order the food she wanted.

Their meeting was at the hotel bar. He insisted on meeting at the hotel as he couldn’t leave his wife alone. Zeno could already tell what Mr. Stall was going to say, although they had agreed to meet last night. But after the bow incident, Zeno just had a feeling that Mr. Stall would brag about his daughter. If not, then maybe he would complain about what happened to her.

Zeno went to the Italian restaurant and ordered some food by himself. Meanwhile, Blec just followed him like usual whenever they went together.

“I’m sorry, Sir. We don’t do room service,” the waitress said apologetically. No matter how important the person was, rules were rules. Unless the manager stepped down to handle it themselves.

“Then, you can wait here and drop the food for my wife.” Zeno looked at Blec as he ordered him. Blec nodded his head and watched his boss walk off to a different section in the hotel, to be exact, the bar, which thankfully was open twenty-four hours.

When Zeno walked into the bar, he looked throughout the bar to find his companion. His eyes fell on the bar counter. He saw the man’s posture and could already tell it was Mr. Stall. He walked over to the counter and sat next to him.

“Forgive my lateness, I have to order some food for my wife from the restaurant,” Zeno spoke, opening up the conversation. He ordered a glass of whisky to accompany his talk.

Mr. Stall kept quiet, sipping his drink while he was aware that Zeno had arrived. He was keeping himself at bay, thinking about his injured daughter. He felt betrayed by Zeno. How could he let his daughter bleed all by herself, without thinking of helping her?

“I thought you’d have a little heart to help my daughter who bled to death, Alaister,” Mr. Stall started, eyes kept looking down on his glass. He stirred the glass before taking a sip.

“She was not bleeding to death, Mr. Stall,” Zeno responded calmly. “She played victim and framed my wife. Sabotaging the bow my wife used, and she wants to play the victim. Think, Gerald. Do you think I would stay quiet if someone messes with my wife? As unimportant as she is to me, I don’t have the responsibility to help her. She got her own assistant, didn’t she, last night?” Zeno threw the question at him like stating facts.

“So, that’s why you didn’t help her? That’s unreasonable!” Gerald, Mr. Stall snapped. His eyes reddened in fury as he looked at Zeno.

“Unreasonable is when your daughter gave my wife a broken bow in their first meeting. Clearly, your daughter was trying to hurt my wife ‘unintentionally’.” Zeno didn’t air-quoted it, but emphasized it hard. When his drink was placed in front of him, he sipped it slowly. But the after, he dropped the glass with a hard thud. Zeno didn’t have to look at him to know he was being stared at. His gaze was too loud to be ignored, but Zeno didn’t give in like he was disinclined.

“Should I let Mr. Lane know about her daughter’s condition?”

“Mr. Lane? The sheriff is your wife’s father?” Gerald asked, his voice raised a little. There were not a lot of people invited to their wedding, so it was understandable that not many people knew about their marriage and the family tree.

“Yes. You never heard it? I thought you’d be updated about your business partners. That’s how it should be, shouldn’t it?” Zeno suddenly got up from his seat. He asked the bartender to put the bill on his tab, so he didn’t bother to pay. “I’ll have to go back to check on my wife. Good day, Mr. Stall.” Not once did Zeno ever look at the old man. Even when he was leaving, not a single glance was shared.

Zeno was that cold while doing business. There was no room for mistakes or even a slight error. He didn’t bother to give them a second of his time to some useless partners. He could see how his business partners would bring him profits or troubles.

"That woman, your wife... she looked familiar," Gerald chirped when Zeno was about to walk away. He got Zeno's attention now, just by a few words about his wife. Yes, he stopped, but he kept his back on him. Knew if he turned back, he would let Gerald think he won.
