Chapter 48 Compatibility, Her or Her

Chapter 48 Compatibility, Her or Her
Zeno stared at her with a look that was hard to describe, and Bianca couldn’t solve it either. Zeno had always been this cold, distant, and careless. They had been ‘friends’ for a few years, and Bianca still couldn’t understand him, let alone how to tame him. In the end, she lost him to a woman lower than her, in terms of class, quality, and even aura. She was better and more compatible with Zeno in every way.

“What are you expecting, Bianca?” he asked. His folded arms kept one hand up to finish his cigarette. He blew the smoke carelessly, even when it hit her face. “You gave my wife the broken bow. She missed her shot, you can’t blame her.”

“That shows how untalented she is, Alaister. Can’t you see? She’s not compatible with you!” Bianca almost shouted in frustration. She took a step, but Blec blocked her immediately. In this tension, Blec wouldn’t let her get close to Zeno.

“Is she not?” He raised an eyebrow. How dare she say Lyla was not talented? “Why not?” Now they were in this dirt already, why not hear what she gotta say about his wife. He pushed Blec out of the way and got himself off the car. Now, he faced her front to front. “Say it, I’m listening.”

“She will break, Alaister. Your world doesn’t fit for anyone, you know what I’m saying. Your wife is far from fitting into your world, Alaister. Look at her!” Bianca pointed her hand behind her, to the person sitting in the backseat of the car, passed out.

“Don’t point your finger at my wife, Bianca. It’s rude, know your manners. Isn’t that what you’re implying?” Zeno warned her. He threw the cigarette butt to the ground and stepped on it to kill the remaining fire. His eyes never waver, keeping the coldness at bay.

“She’s not worth your time, Alaister,” Bianca kept diffusing her notion.

“If she doesn’t, so do you. My men will drive you back to your lodge.” Zeno gestured his hand, pointing to the car that would take her back to her lodge to join her father. “Tell your father I will see him soon.”

“Why?” Lyla cleared her throat. She just woke up a few minutes ago, in an unfamiliar room, a standard template room like a hotel. “Did we sleep here?” she asked, reforming her question. Her face felt numb, and she was afraid to even touch it.

“Yes, there’s no way I’m bringing you home in this state, Lyla.” He pointed to her forehead, which left a brush around i and the worst, it had turned into deep purple. Her face looked puffy, but he was not going to say that to her face. He was not sacrificing his head today; he had a lot of work to do.

She groaned when she moved up to lean against the headboard.

“Does your head still hurt?” He walked closer to her side and sat on the edge. Lyla nodded, painfully slow.

“It’s pounding,” she replied hoarsely. “Water, please,” she asked for help, to get her some water to wet her dry throat.

Zeno attentively served the water she asked for. He poured the water out of the bottle into a glass to simplify her intake. It would be easier for her to drink the water from a glass rather than straight from the bottle.

“I’m waiting,” Zeno said while looking at her patiently. His sudden remarks made her choke. She coughed a few times before handing the glass back to him.

"What are you talking about?" Her look of innocence didn't pass his judgment.

"Lyla," he warned her, but his voice was soft, as if he wanted her to share her story. He didn't want her to keep a secret from him. He knew she had a life before him, and that was what he tried to find out. "You hurt yourself on purpose. Do you know how long it takes to get back to normal?"

"I'm not pretty anymore?" She pouted. There she goes again. His stern eyes made her sigh. "Face heals faster, don't worry," she casually brushed off the topic of her purposely getting hurt. She spoke like a lecture, but who was she lecturing? She was talking to the master himself. Weirdly, Zeno was involved in dangerous activities. But why did he never get hurt?

"Then who's going to check on your wound and treat it?" Zeno checkmated her, turning her witty response against her.

"My perfect husband, of course." Lyla smiled guiltily, and she brought her hand up to touch his face. But she shriked when she saw her fingers were wrapped. Then, worry washed over her face. "Is it that bad?" Her voice came out in a whisper. She was distracted by her fingers, still inspecting them, trying to find the gap to peek through.

"You almost lost them," Zeno said, exaggerating, but his tone was flat, leading her to believe the injury was that bad. His expression was also serious, which was how he looked most of the time when not around her.

"Lies," she breathed out and tried to punch his chest. He grabbed her hand before it could reach him.

"I want to know how you can use the bow and arrow, Lyla. The skill couldn't come overnight or even on the spot," Zeno spoke, holding her hand, so she couldn't avoid the question.

"I want to eat," instead, she said a different thing, totally avoiding the topic, which he expected. She was hiding something from him, and he didn't like it. So, he would keep digging until he found the answer he was looking for. He would get the answer from her, that what marriage does, talking through every problem together.

"You said you want to eat me. I'm all yours now, cicci," he whispered, shivering her whole body. He leaned closer to her face. He cupped her cheek, angling his face, ready to move into action.

Lyla fluttered her eyes closed, ready for him. A few seconds passed, and she still didn't feel his lips on hers. Instead, she felt his warm kiss on her forehead.
