Letter to the Future
Letter to the Future
As if nature itself wanted to hear what we were going to do, the rain pattered softly on the windows of our peaceful house. Our study's ancient oak desk, which Damon had fixed up himself during our first spring here, was where I sat. Beside me, a candle flickered, its light moving in time with the ideas racing through my mind.
The topic of our writing today was the future.
The talk began on the back porch while drinking tea. I brought up the notion of writing letters—not to each other, but to the next generation—after we had seen the sunlight draw golden lines over the lake. Pens, notebooks, and airtight envelopes. Sincere facts. I learnt my lessons the hard way. Ink-drawn love.
Damon had been silent for a while. Then, with his shoulders straight in that silent, determined manner of his, he just nodded and rose. "Let’s do it," he proposed.
And suddenly I found myself looking at a blank page.
I inhaled deeply, dipped my pen into the ink, and started writing.
To those who will follow us,
You haven't met us yet. But maybe one day you will see our pictures in yellowed books, read our names in old papers, or hear tales whispered with awe. We are not flawless individuals. However, we are individuals who have the courage to stand out for peace, art, truth, and love.
My name is Emma Hale, and galleries and magnificent halls are not where my adventure started. Broken spots were where it started. at silent times of suffering. In long evenings of uncertainty. I was a girl with a talent, a curse, and a choice. And I decided to fight. Again and again.
When the world is constantly tearing you apart, you may question how one can remain entire. Love is the solution. Not the simple type, the glittering, fading kind. No. The type that keeps you anchored. That changes who you are. The sort that says, "I'll stay even if you fall." I'll hug you even if you scream."
Damon was that love for me.
He was a guy who was both bright and dark. A storm, a warrior, a leader. He didn't ask me to be less, however. He stood with me amid the flames, letting me burn. We created something out of nothing, and I hope you will be able to stand on it someday.
Here are my truths, then:
1\. Life involves pain. Do not flee from it. Allow it to instruct you. Allow it to improve your eyesight.
2\. Being kind is not a sign of weakness. The loudest revolt is this one.
3\. Power comes from art. It is capable of healing. It may reveal. It has the power to alter everything.
4\. Have a profound love. Despite the pain. Particularly when it is painful.
5\. Have faith in your voice. even if it shivers. Particularly at that time.
And never forget that you are never alone. We are cheering you on from somewhere in the past.
From the bottom of my heart,
Emma
With a shaking hand, I put down the pen. I could hear the click of a drawer, the scrape of a chair, and Damon in the other room. Since we began this, he has been very silent. I knew him well enough to understand the significance of that stillness.
Something was stirring in him.
With his own note in his hand, he entered the room. He smiled slightly but said nothing. Rather, he slipped his letter forward while seated across from me.
He questioned, "Do you want to read it?"
I gave a nod.
To those who uphold our name, our labor, or our essence,
Damon Thorne is my name. And you probably know me from two sources: the guy who built and the one who burnt.
I also won't deny it.
I have a history filled with blunders, treachery, and blood that still reverberates in my bones. I regret the decisions I made. I also covered the cost of them. I have experienced loneliness, quiet, and evenings spent looking at the ceiling, wondering who I could have become if I had made a different decision, but not always punishment.
Then I got to know her.
I learned to breathe again from Emma. to rebuild. to think I could be greater than the harm I've caused.
Legacy in the conventional sense is not the topic of this letter. If my name endures, it doesn't matter to me. However, if you learn anything from our tale, it should be this:
1\. Starting anew is always an option. even if nobody yet has faith in you.
2\. Control is not strength. It's giving in to reality.
3\. More important than ambition is loyalty. Locate your folks. Keep them near you.
4\. There is a chance for redemption. But only if you own up to your mistakes.
5\. Guard the things you cherish. Angry. With courage. Without regret.
A peaceful morning with the person you love by your side is what peace looks like, if you've ever wondered what it looks like. It seems to be forgiveness. similar to art. Like a trust-filled quiet.
I have many failures. However, I stood back up. Because she thought I could.
I hope someone has that kind of faith in you. And if they don't, begin with having faith in yourself.
Till our shadows collide,
Damon
As I finished reading, my eyesight became blurry due to tears. Damon was silent and still as he observed me, but I could tell everything from his gaze. He spoke with sincerity.
Together, we sealed the letters and put them in a wooden box that had been crafted by a young village artisan on his commission. We had previously decided on the location, which would be a time-locked area of the brand-new art complex that would open in 20 years.
A present for the future.
Damon put his arms around me as the sun disappeared below the hills, leaving the room dotted with long gold streaks. The weight of the past and the hope for the future weighed down on us as we stood in silence.
"Do you think they’ll understand?" I muttered.
He said, "Maybe not now," and planted a kiss on my temple. "But one day, they will."
The house resonated with a gentle knock. It was too late to have guests.
Damon's eyes narrowed slightly as he withdrew. With each step, my pulse pounded harder as I followed him to the front door.
Slowly, he opened it.
A lady stood with her face partially obscured by the porch light, her coat drenched from the rain.
However, I was familiar with her.
I gasped. Damon stiffened at my side.
She was the one.
My dream girl.
The one who, as a child, had painted next to me. Beyond my imagination, the one I believed had never been.
She gave a knowing, melancholy grin. "Emma," she murmured in a shaky voice. "We must speak. It has to do with your mother.
We had just been confronted by the past we believed we had forgotten.
