A calm Environment
A calm Environment
I had no idea that quiet could seem so complete. Every wind gust was a silent symphony that was performed only for us as it rustled through the towering trees that surrounded our new house. With his body warm against the cool mountain air, Damon stood next to me on the porch, his hand brushing the small of my back. Neither of us was prepared to unpack, but our suitcases were still at the door. We stood still, listening, feeling, and breathing.
The cottage had a view of a beautiful lake that mirrored the evening sky's soft orange hue. Unlike the villas or city penthouses we were used to, this location was not as opulent. It was little, hidden away, and made of wood and ancient stone. But we owned it. A refuge. After a life of activity, a stop.
"What are your thoughts?" Damon said in a quiet voice.
I put my head on his shoulder and leaned forward. "I believe it to be the most breathtaking location we have ever visited."
He laid his face on top of my head after kissing it. "No reporters. No speeches. No one is looking.
"Just the two of us," I muttered.
This had been a long trek. In memories as well as distances. The betrayals, the triumphs, the exhibits, the foundations, the summits, the scandals. This peaceful haven was the result of all we worked for and everything we achieved.
Amber light reflected off the wooden walls from the quiet crackling fireplace within. Damon tossed in another wood and walked towards it. I saw how, in spite of all he had gone through, his body now moved with ease and vigor. Our lives had previously been rocked by his sickness, but his recovery made us appreciate each moment even more.
I strolled around the living room, running my fingertips over shabby bookcases that held dusty diaries and literature. The location seemed to have been anticipating our arrival. A house cut out of space and time, isolated from the outside world.
By the window, Damon came to join me and put his arms around my waist. He said, "Tell me what you're thinking."
"I'm considering..." I wrapped my arms around his neck and turned to face him. "I believe we finally have time to spend as Emma and Damon alone."
Then he gently and passionately kissed me. It wasn't hasty or urgent. It was packed. Sure. The kiss that conveys everything without using words. I felt his heart, firm against mine, as he drew me in until our bodies were mashed together.
Wordless in our comprehension, we danced through the cabin. The world outside vanished as he picked me up and took me to the plush rug beside the fireplace. No spotlight was present. No heritage. Only the warmth of us and the fire's heat.
Later, my head rested on his chest as we slept there, entangled in one another. Shadows flashed across the ceiling as the flames flared. One of my hairs was messed with by Damon.
"You miss it?" he said quietly.
"The limelight?"
He gave a nod.
I stopped. "No. Sometimes I miss the folks. the people we assisted. the people we motivated. Not the stage, however. Not the strain. Our best work, in my opinion, was walking away.
He grinned. It's funny that the most defiant thing we ever asserted was peace.
The stars in the sky were starting to wink awake as darkness settled softly outside. Damon stood and put on a sweatshirt, then grabbed a blanket and headed outdoors. I smiled and went barefoot after him. Wrapped in the blanket, we reclined on the porch swing as the lake below reflected the stars.
"Now what?" I inquired.
Damon raised his head. "We inhale. We cultivate tomatoes. Chickens, maybe. When you want to, you paint. I construct furniture. We age. We quarrel about the appropriate amount of sugar to add to the tea.
I chuckled. "You always overdo it."
He turned to kiss me once more and whispered, "Because I like it sweet."
Organizing a peaceful life together seemed so personal. Not a spectacular conclusion. But a slow, steady unfolding.
We remained outside until the night became darker and the cold forced us indoors. With his old instincts intact, Damon examined the windows and doors as I cuddled up in bed.
I observed him as he climbed beneath the blankets with me, noting the tenderness in his eyes, the slight scar under his collarbone, and the line of his jaw.
I said, "You remain my favorite mystery."
He drew me in. "And you're the response I never anticipated."
We started to fall asleep. Our breaths matched as my body completely relaxed against his.
However, something broke the silence as my thoughts started to wander.
There's a knock.
First, then two.
It was dim. yet authentic. The front door was knocked on.
Damon tensed. With my heart racing, I sat up.
"Who would..." I muttered.
Already out of bed, he grabbed the little knife he kept next to the dresser and put on pants. I grabbed my robe and walked down the hall barefoot after him.
One more knock. This time, firmer.
We arrived at the door. Through the peephole, Damon peered.
He stopped.
"Who is it?" My voice was strained as I asked.
He pulled the door open.
And there stood a person we both believed we would never see again, breathless, eyes wide, and soaking from the rain.
The figure continued, "I... I need your help."
I gasped.
Someone from our history was involved. Someone who has been long buried by agony, fire, and time.
However, they were present.
alive.
Whatever tranquility we had discovered was about to be put to the test, based on the expression in their eyes.
Once more.
