Chapter 147 CHAPTER 147
«DAYS LATER»

Soren isn’t very excited about this so-called lunch date with his mother-in-law; the woman still doesn't like him, while her husband is a little too happy about Reign getting a partner than anything in the world.

Soren sits comfortably on his side of the table, cutting into his steak without a care in the world, while across from him sits Evelyn Montgomery.

Reign’s mother is dressed in an excessive amount of pearls and a blazer that probably costs more than the entire apartment building Soren grew up in.

She hasn't touched her salad.

She has just been watching him eat for the last twenty minutes. Well, if she enjoys watching, Soren isn't one to be unnerved easily.

And after what feels like an eternity of just the sound of Soren’s cutlery on his plate, the woman finally breaks the silence.

For a moment, Soren thought they were just going to eat, but knowing the woman, he knows that’s not happening.

"It has been exactly one year, Soren…," Evelyn says, breaking the silence. "One year since my son put that ring on your finger, and yet, there is no wedding planner hired. My husband and I are starting to think you two are going to hold the wedding when we’re in our graves.”

Soren chews his food, swallows, and takes a sip of sparkling water.

A year. The words echo in his head.

He almost can’t believe it’s been a year since he signed the devil’s contract and sold his soul.

Well, ever since Reign confessed his feelings for him, Soren stopped counting because he no longer sees himself parting from the Enigma.

This woman kept count. Soren snorts and replies. "Reign is busy running his company, and I’m currently still in college, so I’ll say we’ll plan the wedding when we’re both ready. There’s nothing to rush, is there, Mrs. Montgomery?” He smirks once he’s done talking.

The woman’s lips press into a hard, disapproving line. She sighs and shakes her head, as if realizing she’s fighting a losing battle and she has already accepted defeat. She taps her fingers on the table, still making no attempt to touch her salad.

Seems she has no plans of eating.

Soren rolls his eyes and cuts off another piece of meat and chews quietly.

He and Reign’s wedding can’t be the only reason why she called him out for lunch, can it? Well, Soren is proven right when she opens her mouth to speak again.

"Let us drop the act, Fox. We both know why there is no wedding date. It is because you are a Beta. A male Beta, at that. You are physically incapable of providing the Montgomery family with what it actually needs to continue its legacy. I guess Reign finally sees you’re of no use to him. If my son wants to truly marry you, he won’t wait years to do it," she says smoothly and waves her hand dismissively as she has figured out everything.

Soren sets his knife down a little too loudly as his jaw clenches taut and his eyes turn incredibly flat.

"Here we go. It’s been a year; when are you going to realize Reign has no plans of getting rid of me?" he spits, the words coming out bitter as he feels his patience with the woman slipping.

What does he have to do to get her to actually like him? Not that he cares, but still…

She scoffs and slightly turns her gaze away. "You know how the world works, Soren. Reign is an enigma; he is the apex while everyone else is underneath, it’s only normal for his heir to become a pure-blood alpha or an enigma like himself. As a Beta, your chances of conceiving and carrying a child are practically zero. Your subgender simply isn't built for it."

"Reign is an enigma," Soren counters, leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms over his chest. "His subgender overrides rules; he can get anyone pregnant, even a Beta."

Evelyn tilts her head, a mocking smile appearing across her face as her gaze drops to his stomach. "Then why aren't you pregnant, Soren? It’s been a year; obviously you two don’t use condoms during sex… at least not all the time."

The words feel like a harsh slap to the face, and his hand twitches, his mind racing back to the bottle of pills waiting for him back at home.

He knows why he can’t get pregnant, and that doesn't mean he’s going to explain his life problems to the woman who cares about no one but herself.

"What makes you think that’s why I’m not pregnant, what about the fact that we’re not ready for a child?”

Seeing his hesitation, Evelyn smiles and crosses one leg over the other. "It’s time for you to face reality, child. You should just forget the idea of a traditional marriage and allow Reign to take in an Omega."

Soren stares at her like she has grown an extra head on her shoulder. "Excuse me?"

"I am not telling you to leave," she clarifies generously, waving a dismissive hand. "Reign is clearly attached to you. You can stay and remain his companion, but he needs a proper mate to breed with. I already have someone in mind. She comes from a very good family, a purebred Omega with a good medical history—"

Soren lets out a loud, abrasive laugh, cutting off her words. He throws his head back, and tears sting at the corner of his eyes at how hard he laughs. This has to be the funniest shit he has heard in a while.

Evelyn frowns deeply, looking offended. "I fail to see what is funny."

Soren leans all the way forward across the table and looks her dead in the eye, dropping any pretense of respect as he says.

"I am greedy, Mrs. Montgomery. I don't share; not my food, not my clothes, and definitely not my Enigma. If you ever try to bring some purebred Omega into Reign's bed, I will personally kill them. And if I don't get to them first, Reign will tear them apart with his bare hands for even suggesting he touch someone who isn't me."

Evelyn’s jaw clenches so tightly she almost bursts a muscle while her eyes drill through his face.

Soren wipes his mouth and throws the cloth napkin onto his half-eaten steak and stands up to his feet. He straightens his clothes and flashes her a smile.

"Enjoy the salad, Mrs. Montgomery," Soren says, and without another word, he turns and walks out of the room without looking back.

The nerve of the woman to think she can throw anyone into his and Reign’s life and fucking expect him to accept it.

Who the fuck does she think she is?

Soren clicks his tongue in annoyance and pushes his way out of the restaurant, with a new destination in mind.
