Chapter 65
Hearing the phone ring, Cynthia, who had just fallen asleep, felt a surge of irritation.
She hadn't slept well the night before and had just dozed off when she was woken up again.
Seeing it was Sabrina calling.
Another woman from the Spencer Family! Her annoyance deepened.
So she deliberately let it ring for a while, and only when Sabrina called for the third time did she finally answer lazily. "Hello, who is it?"
Sabrina's deliberate sweet voice came through: "Mrs. Forbes, it's me, Sabrina."
Cynthia rolled her eyes: "I'm sleeping. Make it quick."
There was a brief pause on the other end before Sabrina spoke again, gripping her phone tightly. "Mrs. Forbes, there's something I think I should tell you."
"Oh, what is it?" Cynthia’s tone sounded casual, but she was already listening closely.
She'd always known what kind of person Sabrina was—only Alexander still naively thought of her as an innocent girl.
So she was certain that whatever Sabrina wanted to say must be about Charlotte.
Sure enough, after hearing what Sabrina said, Cynthia was fully awake.
Alexander was finally divorcing Charlotte?
This was fantastic news!
Not to brag, but Alexander had been outstanding since childhood, with an excellent background.
If Nicole hadn't insisted on a marriage alliance with the Spencer Family, with Alexander's character and abilities, he could have matched with any high-society lady in River City. Why would he have married that stupid woman Charlotte, who had no education or skills? Seven years wasted.
But Alexander was only thirty now, in his prime.
Cynthia was certain that once the divorce went through, eligible women would be lining up for him.
The more Cynthia thought about it, the happier she became, her eyes nearly closing with satisfaction.
So for once, she was pleasant to Sabrina: "Sabrina, you're so thoughtful, unlike Charlotte, who's like a block of wood."
"By the way, remember to keep me updated about Alexander."
Sabrina obediently agreed, but after hanging up, she sneered at her phone. "If it weren't for Alexander, I wouldn't bother with you."
Meanwhile, Cynthia couldn't contain her joy and immediately called Alexander.
"Alexander, I heard you're divorcing Charlotte?"
Alexander frowned: "Mom, who told you that?"
Cynthia: "Doesn't matter who told me. The important thing is, you must get this divorce! Only then can you escape this misery."
Alexander fell silent.
But Cynthia urgently added: "Alexander, before signing, make sure Charlotte hands over the medicine! Otherwise don't give her a penny!"
"Also, she's been staying home living off you all these years, eating your food, wearing your clothes, never earning a cent for the family, so make sure your lawyer finds a way to give her as little money as possible."
Cynthia's voice was shrill and grating. Alexander finally lost his patience:
"Mom, I have urgent matters to handle. Hanging up now."
Staring at the disconnected call, Cynthia paused, then cursed: "Brat."
On the other end, Alexander stared at his phone for a long time.
Very few people knew about today's events—only Charlotte and Landon, himself, Sabrina, and Calvin.
Charlotte and Landon wouldn't have told Cynthia...
He quickly opened his phone: “Calvin, did you tell my mother about today?”
On the other end, Calvin protested his innocence: "My family's business has been under attack. As soon as I got back, my dad dragged me to the company to work. Where would I find time to chat with your mom?"
After hanging up, Alexander's expression darkened.
If it wasn't Calvin, then it could only be Sabrina. Alexander immediately called her.
"Sabrina, have you been changing your bandages on time?"
"By the way, did you just call my mom?"
On the other end, Sabrina's mind raced. As expected, Cynthia hadn’t been able to hold back and had already called Alexander.
So she quickly put on a panicked act: "Alexander, I didn't call Mrs. Forbes. It's just that Elara called me earlier and I accidentally let it slip."
"But I told her right away not to tell anyone."
Hearing it was Elara who leaked the news, Alexander looked helpless: "So it was Elara. Forget it, let it go."
Putting down her phone, Sabrina raised an eyebrow, looking smug.
As expected, Elara made the perfect scapegoat.
Meanwhile, after finishing the barbecue, Charlotte got the medicine from Oliver and the letter of understanding for Calvin that Landon's lawyer had sent over. She wanted to take a taxi back to her apartment.
But Oliver insisted on driving her, and with Landon also urging her, she couldn’t refuse. Reluctantly, she got into the car with them.
In the car, after Charlotte asked a few questions about Philip's condition over the past couple days, they rode in silence, each seemingly lost in thought.
Thinking about how she'd unexpectedly resolved the biggest hurdle in her divorce, Charlotte felt completely at ease, even temporarily forgetting about the online backlash.
But while she was secretly pleased, she didn't notice that Landon was quietly observing her through the rearview mirror.
Seeing her clutch the medicine and letter of understanding tightly, a faint smile on her face...
Only then did Landon look away with relief, his lips curving up almost imperceptibly.
That evening, Charlotte had just finished a phone call with Philip when Jenna came back from the shop.
After hearing what happened, Jenna immediately ordered a bunch of skewers and beer, saying she wanted to celebrate early for Charlotte.
Moments later, sitting face-to-face with Jenna, eating skewers and clinking beer glasses, Charlotte felt more relaxed and content than ever.
Hard to believe that just a month ago, she'd been at the Forbes Family running around taking care of Alexander and Owen.
If she'd wanted to go out for a meal and drinks with Jenna, she would've had to plan three months in advance.
No wonder Jenna used to complain that she was impossible to meet.
By the end of the night, Charlotte didn't know how she got back to bed, only that she and Jenna slept leg-to-leg, head-to-head until morning. Comfortable.
After the two got up and had breakfast, Jenna suddenly wanted to take Charlotte shopping.
Then, worried Charlotte might be recognized by internet trolls, she changed her mind and suggested going to the suburbs instead.
Charlotte didn't want to spoil Jenna's fun, and she also wanted to find some inspiration in the countryside, so she agreed right away.
The two got ready and set off, quickly arriving near their destination.
In the past when Charlotte went out with the Forbes Family, she was either busy taking care of her son or arranging food for everyone, like an unpaid nanny... Now, playing around with Jenna and eating street food, she was having more fun than ever.
She almost didn't want to go back.
Who would have thought that leaving the Forbes family would make her this happy?
If she'd known, she wouldn't have put up with it for so long.
Just as she was thinking this, Jenna suddenly nudged her with her elbow...
