BREACHING THE CONTRACT.
Alexander’s POV.
“And what is the second thing?” Liam asked.
“How will Leila react to my rejection?” I mumbled.
“Sorry I did not get you, can you come again?” Liam asked, politely.
“I do not love Leila and I can not love her. This marriage was built on our quest for revenge. Falling in love should not be among. I made a big mistake by opening up too much. Now she is expecting some sort of reciprocation from me.” I complained, pacing around Liam’s living room.
“You have to relax and take your mind off of Leila and her confession. You should not think about it so much or your brain will become foggy.” Liam advised.
“I can not help it. This is very disturbing and complicated. I mean why did she have to love me!” I screamed in frustration and ran my hand in my hair.
“Okay fine, since you do not want to forget about it. Let us talk about it.” Liam said.
Liam sat down across me, and his face looked concern.
“You look like you are under a lot of pressure and burden. Common, spill it all out start from the beginning maybe it might help you reduce it.” Liam said.
I hesitated for a moment. Even though I already said this a million times, I still did not know where or how to start.
“Start anywhere, I am here to listen .” Liam said , his voice soft.
I took a moment to collect my thoughts, and then spoke slowly and deliberately.
“ I do not love Leila. We got married because of a deal we made. I do agree that I get worried about her and I care for her, but I have never felt any real connection to her. And now, she loves me. She made things even more complicated for me man.” I said, all in one breath.
“Woah calm down Eminem, “Liam joked. “ that is a lot to take in. How did Leila’s confession made you feel in the first place?”
I massaged my temples and tried to clear my head.
“ I feel..weird..confused and conflicted. I care about her as a person but I am very sure that I do not feel love for her.”
Liam sighed. “And How has this made you feel?”
“I feel guilty. I am sure she must have dreamt about having a future with me. But I do not know what to do next. Should I tell her the truth and tell her how I feel about her or should I just keep quiet and keep things natural till we both achieved our aims?” I asked.
“How close are you two to achieving your aims?” Liam asked, after a moment of silence.
“Not even close.. Leila just started gathering evidence against Ben and so far what he has is not concrete enough to send Ben or Allison to jail.” I answered.
Liam stood up and walked to the kitchen, coming back after a few minutes.
“And you? How close are you to achieving your aims?” He asked.
Looking up at Liam, I sighed before answering his question,”I have not even started my revenge plans against the Maloney’s.”
“Why? I thought you married Leila so you can use her to gain access to the Maloney’s?” Liam asked in confusion.
“Stop saying it like that! It makes me look like a two faced man who is using his wife to get what he wants.” I grumbled.
“Well you can only be using her to get what you want if you left her in the dark, if you told her about it is more like she is helping you.”
I stared at Liam as he spoke, a pang of guilt over me.
Leila does not know about it. She has no idea as to why I really agreed to marry her.
“Was I a two faced man?” A voice in my head asked.
I shook my head to get rid of those thoughts.
“Judging from your expression, I am sure you did not tell Leila the truth. Why did you keep her in the dark? She told you everything about hers and even let you in on her plan. Why are you so secretive about yours?” Liam asks.
I took a few steps forward and poured for myself another glass of wine.
“One, two, three, four! Alright that’s it.” Liam snatched bottle and glass of wine from my hand.
“I am not tipsy yet Liam. I know what I am doing.” I fired at him and tried to get my glass of wine back.
“No! How many fingers am I holding up?” Liam asked, holding up with fingers.
“Really?” I asked, “ I am not some kid Liam. I am fine.” I argued.
“No. You tell me how many fingers I am holding up maybe I might give you your glass of wine back.” Liam said.
“Fine. You are holding up two fingers , your index finger and your middle finger. Now can I have my glass of wine?” I whined.
“Why did you keep Leila in the dark?” Liam asked.
“I am ashamed. If I tell her I am seeking revenge from my father, she might begin to look down on me.” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
“That is nothing to be ashamed of. You are seeking revenge for a good cause.” Liam tried to assure me.
“No man. I can not tell anyone about my mum’s dark past and how I came to being. It should be a secret and no one should find out about it. No one knows what will happen if this gets out.” I said, my voice breaking.
“I understand you Alex. But I think Leila can be trusted with that secret. You can tell her, she might help you and that might even help in improving your relationship with her.” Liam put a hand on my shoulder.
“Or I can just end the marriage and we both go our separate ways.” I said, an idea already forming in my mind.
