Chapter 84: The Price of Knowledge
The light of the sphere disappeared as quickly as it had come, plunging Vaiolet into an almost tangible darkness. The glow that had illuminated the room faded, and the air became thick, heavy. It wasn’t just the absence of light that enveloped her, but the feeling that something deep, something intangible, had changed inside her.
Vaiolet took a deep breath, struggling to regain control. The vision she had experienced when touching the sphere continued to echo in her mind, and the images, the echoes of the past and the future, kept assaulting her. The knowledge had come with overwhelming force, and with it, the certainty that what she had learned could never be undone.
She slowly stood up, the sound of her footsteps echoing through the vastness of the room. She looked around, searching for an exit, but the space seemed to have transformed into something completely different. The walls, once covered with runes, were now empty, as if everything she had known up to that point had been an illusion. The room, the sphere, the masked figure… everything had disappeared, and only the weight of what she had absorbed remained.
"Knowledge is both a blessing and a curse," the figure’s words resonated in her mind. Had she made the right decision? Was she truly ready for what was to come? Questions began to form in her mind, but there were no clear answers, only the feeling that she was closer than ever to discovering the truth about her destiny.
Suddenly, a shadow moved beside her, and Vaiolet quickly spun around, her hand instinctively gripping the hilt of her sword. But it wasn’t a threat that awaited her. Instead of a hostile figure, she saw Kael, his face filled with concern but with a glimmer of relief in his eyes.
—Vaiolet… —he said, approaching her cautiously—. You’re okay. I thought… we didn’t know what had happened to you.
Vaiolet looked at him, trying to gather the words needed to explain what she had experienced. The weight of the knowledge, the visions, the feeling of being pulled by something larger than herself, all of it crowded in her mind. She didn’t know where to begin.
—Kael… —her voice trembled, but she forced herself to speak—. I’ve seen things… things I can’t fully understand. I’ve touched the source of truth, but now I feel… different.
Kael nodded, gently taking her hand.
—I know. I felt the energy when you touched the sphere. Something has changed, that much is clear. But what matters now is that you’re here, with us. That means, no matter what happens, we can face it together.
Vaiolet stared into his eyes, searching for something that could give her an answer, something that could calm the storm raging inside her. But there were no easy answers. She knew that what she had learned didn’t just affect her future, but the future of everyone around her.
—Kael, I’m not sure I’m ready for this. The price is higher than I imagined. The knowledge I have now… is more than I can bear.
Kael squeezed her hand tighter, offering her some comfort, but also letting her know she wasn’t alone.
—No one is ready for what’s to come. But that doesn’t mean we can’t face it. Together, we can bear any burden.
Vaiolet nodded, although she still couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that filled her. She knew there was something more, something bigger than herself, that was about to be unleashed. But there was nothing more she could do but move forward. The knowledge was already within her, and she couldn’t escape its grasp.
With a final sigh, Vaiolet turned toward the center of the room, where the sphere had once been. Now, everything was silent, as if the room had returned to its original state. But Vaiolet knew it was no longer the same place. The weight of the knowledge had changed her, and with it, her view of the world.
—We have to get out of here —Kael said, breaking the silence. He knew there was more on Vaiolet’s mind, something she didn’t want to share, but he trusted that she would when she was ready.
Vaiolet nodded, and together, they began walking toward the exit of the room. As they moved, the air became lighter, as if the very atmosphere were responding to their presence. But despite the calm that surrounded them, a shadow still crept into their hearts, a shadow neither of them could avoid.
As they exited the temple, Vaiolet felt the sun strike her face, its warmth and comfort flooding her. But the sun no longer seemed the same. Everything had changed. The distant mountains, the trees, the sky, all seemed closer, more tangible, but also darker, as if everything were on the verge of crumbling.
The world they knew was about to face something much larger than they could comprehend. The knowledge of the source had been just the beginning. Now, the real challenge was beginning.
—What will we do now? —Vaiolet asked, her voice quiet, but with renewed determination.
Kael looked at her, a firm expression on his face.
—What we’ve always done. Fight. And when the time comes, face whatever comes, no matter what it is.
Vaiolet nodded, feeling a wave of gratitude toward him. By her side, Kael had always been her anchor in the storm, and now, more than ever, she needed that stability.
In the distance, the horizon began to darken, as if the world itself were responding to the change that was coming. Vaiolet looked up at the sky, and for a moment, thought of everything she had lost and everything she still had yet to gain.
The journey she had started so long ago was far from over. She would face whatever came with the strength she had found within herself, with the help of those who supported her. Because, in the end, sacrifice had been inevitable. And the only question that remained was how much she would be willing to give to ensure the future was worth it.
