Chapter 83: The Echo of Reality
The darkness still loomed, but not the same darkness she had faced in the past. Vaiolet had gone through trials and challenges, had defeated the shadows of her past, and confronted her deepest fears. However, as she walked down the path that led her to the source of wisdom, something different unfolded before her, like a dangerous stillness.
The ground beneath her feet was covered in thick mist that slid with every step she took. The air around her seemed still, and the light emanating from her hands cast distorted shadows on the walls, as if reality itself was bending around her. Vaiolet stopped for a moment to observe the scene, feeling once again the sensation of being watched. A chill ran down her spine.
In the distance, a light flickered, a light that seemed to be approaching her. It wasn’t a lighthouse or a torch. It was a flash, fleeting and warm, like a lost beacon in the vastness of the darkness. Vaiolet followed it, not knowing exactly why, but trusting in the intuition that had guided her here.
With each step, the air became thicker, denser, and her thoughts began to intertwine, blending with the echoes of voices from the past. The words of her loved ones, now distorted, whispered in her mind, filling the space with an echo of what once was.
— "Remember who you are, Vaiolet," whispered Cedric’s voice, his tone cold as ice.
— "It’s your destiny, my daughter. You cannot escape what has been bestowed upon you," said the voice of her mother, Amaranta, a lament cutting through the mist.
The voices began to accumulate, growing louder and louder, until Vaiolet no longer knew if she was walking the path or if the shadows were pulling her somewhere else. In her mind, she visualized a face she did not want to see, a face she had sworn to forget: her father’s.
He had been the origin of all the suffering she had endured. He was the one who, in his ruthless struggle for power, had robbed Vaiolet of her childhood, her freedom, and her love for life. His figure floated in the mist, as clear as the first time she had seen him in her youth, as cruel as the memories that never faded.
— "You’re weak, Vaiolet," said the figure, his face a mask of indifference. — "You think you can change destiny, but you’re just another puppet in this game."
Vaiolet clenched her fists, her body trembling with rage. She didn’t want him to catch her, didn’t want to fall into that trap. Every time the darkness and the voices from the past threatened to consume her, she found a deeper strength, one that did not belong to her father or anyone else. This time, she would not give in.
— "You are not my destiny!" she shouted with all her strength, her words reverberating in the darkness.
The figure of her father vanished, and the echo of his voice remained behind, fading with the wind that was beginning to blow once more. Vaiolet moved forward, without stopping, without looking back. The shadows no longer had power over her, at least not in the way they had in the past.
With every step she took, the mist began to dissipate, and the air cleared. Finally, she reached a point where the darkness fully parted, revealing to her a vast chamber. In the center of the room, a glowing sphere shone. Vaiolet felt a pulse of magical energy flow from the object, as if the sphere itself were the very source of all the wisdom she had been seeking.
The light emanating from it illuminated the walls surrounding her. At first, the walls seemed smooth and featureless, but when the light touched its surface, the walls began to reveal inscriptions Vaiolet had never seen before, ancient runes forming patterns of deep and arcane knowledge.
Vaiolet approached cautiously, her hand outstretched toward the sphere. However, just as she was about to touch it, a shadow descended from the ceiling, enveloping the sphere with dark radiance. It was the masked figure, the one who had been guiding her through every trial, and now, at last, the moment had come when she would have to face it.
— "You cannot take it yet," the figure said, its voice deep and resonant. — "You are not yet worthy of this knowledge."
Vaiolet felt a knot in her stomach. What did that mean? She had gone through so many trials, faced so many inner demons, that she didn’t understand why she still couldn’t reach the source of wisdom.
— "Why?" she asked, frustration and exhaustion evident in her voice. — "I’ve done everything you asked. I’ve faced my fears, I’ve passed the tests. What more must I do?"
The masked figure sighed, and a denser shadow spread from it, touching the ground like a dark tide.
— "It’s not enough to face what is within you, Vaiolet. The true challenge lies in what comes after. The knowledge of the source is not just a revelation, it’s a burden. A burden that only the truly prepared can bear."
The figure took another step forward and raised its arm toward the sphere, which responded with a glow that filled the entire room.
— "Before you can take what is here, you must understand the consequences of your decisions. Everything you have done so far, the lives you’ve touched, the battles you’ve fought, are not just shadows of the past. They are echoes of the future you are building. The sacrifice will be great, Vaiolet. Are you willing to pay the price?"
Vaiolet swallowed hard. What the figure was saying resonated deep within her. She had fought for a purpose, for a better future, but had she considered everything that was at stake? She knew that taking the knowledge of the source would not be simple, that there would be consequences. But she was ready. She was willing to do it.
— "I’m ready," she replied firmly, without hesitation.
The figure watched her in silence for a long moment. Finally, it nodded, and the shadow enveloping the sphere dissipated, revealing its pure, bright light.
— "Then, take what you have come for. But always remember that knowledge is both a blessing and a curse. What you learn here will change everything you know. You will never be the same after this."
With those words, the figure disappeared, and Vaiolet, now completely alone, extended her hand toward the sphere. As soon as she touched it, an explosion of magical energy enveloped her completely, carrying her into a vision she could not fully comprehend.
It was as if she were seeing the history of the world through her own eyes. Images of her decisions, her struggles, and her victories passed before her. But she also saw the side effects of her actions, the lives she had changed, for better or for worse. The sphere had connected her to everything she had done and everything she still had to do.
The knowledge came to her in waves, and as she absorbed it, a sense of vertigo overtook her. She was no longer the same Vaiolet who had entered that temple. She had touched the truth, but the truth had also touched her.
