Chapter 88
Alexander looked at her nonchalant attitude and for a moment, didn't even know what to say.
He raised his hand to pinch the bridge of his nose and warned coldly, "Don't do this again next time."
Lila froze.
She looked at him with complete confusion.
That's it? After all those questions?
Based on what she'd implied and his self-righteous understanding of her, shouldn't he think she was terrible and vicious, then harshly scold her, mock her, put her down, and do everything possible to trample her dignity underfoot until she had nowhere to hide?
Why weren't things developing according to the normal trajectory?
Why, when she'd been so bad, did Alexander. Who was always awful, domineering, and unreasonable, just leave it at "don't do this again"?
Lila couldn't figure it out at all.
Still, since he didn't scold her, she couldn't help but feel relieved.
Alexander suddenly added, "When Celeste was in Oceancrest City before, she brought Julie to have dinner with me. We're sort of friends. A hundred thousand dollars is nothing to me, and if I could help her out of a tight spot, I might as well do a good deed."
Lila's mouth twitched.
A good deed?
In her eyes, Alexander was hardly a good person.
He was awful to the core. Not to mention his cold-blooded operations in business—he was completely heartless even to her, his legal wife.
But when it came to Celeste's friend, suddenly he wanted to do good deeds?
Really ridiculous.
Speaking of which, before tonight, Lila had never seen Alexander be so considerate toward any woman.
Even when the CFO of the Sinclair Group wanted to invite him to dinner, he refused without hesitation. This showed just how much he was looking after this Julie.
The more Lila thought about it, the more annoyed she felt. She couldn't help but mock him, "Your good deeds are really thorough, even including driving her home. There probably aren't many people in this world who get your helping hand, right? I have to say, Miss Baker really is quite special."
"What do you mean?"
"What I mean is, you've always said I married you for money, right? But after we got married, you never gave me any money. Now you're going to give Miss Xu a hundred thousand dollars—so what about me? How much is this woman who married you for money worth? Why don't you show some of that charity toward me too?"
Alexander looked at Lila with an ugly expression: "Do you really love money that much?"
Lila smiled. "Yeah, don't you?"
After asking back, without giving Alexander any chance to respond, she immediately continued: "If you don't like money, why do you work? If you don't like money, why do you haggle over prices when negotiating deals? Why not just give away profits freely and leave the money for people who like it to earn?"
"Lila, enough."
"I'm just raising my questions. But you have money, so if you don't want me to keep talking, I won't."
With that, she drove quietly. The pent-up emotions in her heart finally dissipated a bit after this exchange.
However, the way Alexander had questioned her because of Julie, the look of disgust in his eyes—it was still vividly etched in her mind.
Just thinking about it made her heart keep sinking.
Lila had known since childhood that looks could sometimes hurt more than blades. Malicious or disgusted gazes could erase all the confidence and pride a person had.
She couldn't stand people looking at her that way.
But Alexander had done exactly that.
