Chapter 186
Alexander looked away and picked up his water glass. As he brought it to his lips, he said flatly, "Go ahead."
"I like you."
At those words, Alexander, who had been expressionless, frowned.
He put down his glass, his voice formal and distant, "Ms. Hill, I've always valued your abilities as CFO, and I hope you'll continue to excel in your position. So please don't think about things that don't mean anything."
Ms. Hill looked at him with affectionate eyes, "Mr. Sinclair, I won't let anything interfere with my work, but today, I'd like you to hear me out."
Alexander glanced at her briefly and said nothing.
Ms. Hill took this as permission and continued slowly, "Mr. Sinclair, I've actually liked you since the first day I saw you at the company. I know many women in the company like you—they follow your every move, and even running into you by chance at the office excites them for days. I'm probably just one of many, but I still can't help liking you."
"To get closer to you, I worked hard and made it to CFO in five years. Finally, I got the chance to report to you once a week and see you at meetings. The more I learned about you, the more I liked you."
"Many people say I got promoted fast and got raises often, that I'm outstanding. But no one knows it's all because of my feelings for you. My feelings for you motivated me to work hard and gave me positive energy. That's why everything went smoothly for me at the Sinclair Group and why I'm where I am today."
Alexander listened to all this without any emotional response.
He glanced in Lila's direction and saw her eating ice cream in big bites, looking like she hadn't eaten in days—as if he'd been starving her and she'd never had a decent meal at Island Mansion.
Alexander felt the urge to call her over and make her listen to how other women confessed their feelings to him.
At that thought, Alexander felt it was ridiculous.
Other people could work their way up through promotions and raises just to get close to him—what kind of determination was that?
But Lila? She only wanted to back out of even driving for him.
The stark contrast made him feel more and more dissatisfied with Lila, and more determined to win her over.
Ms. Hill's voice continued, "Mr. Sinclair, this is the first time you've agreed to have dinner with me, and I'm very happy. I'm not asking you to be my boyfriend by telling you I like you. I just wanted to express my feelings and let you know that you're excellent—so excellent that you can be the driving force behind someone's progress and success."
Alexander acknowledged this and accepted all the praise.
Ms. Hill smiled. "Mr. Sinclair, don't worry. I'll continue to work hard and won't let you down."
He responded with one word, "Good."
With that, Alexander looked down and continued eating.
Ms. Hill stole a glance at him.
After everything she'd said, Mr. Sinclair only had one word—"good"?
Had so many women confessed to him that he didn't even have the patience to respond anymore?
At this thought, Ms. Hill felt a bit sad.
Still, having finally expressed feelings she'd kept buried for years, she also felt relieved.
When Alexander finished eating, he leaned back in his chair and quietly waited for Ms. Hill to finish. At the same time, he looked in Lila's direction. She was still eating her dinner with focus, as if no one else existed, occasionally showing a satisfied expression on her face.
The corners of his lips curved up slightly without him realizing it.
Alexander picked up his water glass and brought it to his lips while continuing to watch Lila with interest.
Then he saw Julie appear out of nowhere and suddenly pass by Lila.
In a few steps, Lila's juice glass tipped over, spilling juice that stained her clothes.
