Chapter 72
But so what?
Alexander had power and influence, while Lila was just a powerless contract wife.
Besides enduring it, what other choice did she have?
Seeing her keeping her head down without saying a word, Alexander said coldly, "Why aren't you talking? Am I wrong?"
Lila looked up to meet his gaze, smiled, and said as if indulging a child, "You're right."
She had clearly gone along with what he said.
But Alexander's expression only grew darker.
Lila ignored it. After unbuckling her seatbelt, she glanced at him, "Boss, could you please back this car into the parking spot?"
"Lila." Alexander called her name, his voice heavy.
Lila responded, "What?"
"You should improve your taste in choosing partners."
Aren't you being a bit too controlling?
She didn't speak, not wanting to discuss this topic.
Besides, the person she liked wasn't as bad as he described at all.
In the silence, Alexander spoke again, "Earlier when Chris asked if your husband treats you well, you said life is just like that. What did you mean?"
Lila frowned.
Does he have too good a memory?
Why does he remember every single thing she says and come back to question her about it later?
"Speak!" Alexander commanded impatiently.
Lila pressed her lips together, "You are my husband. You should know very well whether you treat me well or not, right? If I don't say life is just like that, should I say you treat me badly, stir up Chris's protective instincts, and make him feel sorry for me?"
Alexander snorted coldly, "You're quite bold to say that."
She lowered her eyes and said quietly, "I was just asking a question. You're the one who wanted to discuss this with me."
"You married me for money. What do you expect from me?"
"I don't expect anything. I was just answering Chris's question earlier. Don't overthink it."
Alexander's face darkened as he ordered, "Take out your phone."
Lila asked in confusion, "Why?"
Alexander looked at her, his lips curling into a contemptuous smile, "Delete Chris's contact."
Lila frowned, "Why?"
Alexander's gaze grew deep and dark as he said slowly in a low voice, "Because you are Mrs. Sinclair, and I won't allow Mrs. Sinclair to have any contact with a man who has designs on her, in case you can't control yourself and do something improper that would shame the Sinclair family and affect the Sinclair Group's stock price!"
Lila hadn't expected that Alexander, who seemed so detached and above worldly matters, could imagine so much.
She didn't move and emphasized, "He and I are just classmates."
"Just classmates, yet you followed him around all the time in school? Just classmates, yet you hesitated when I asked who was calling you? Just classmates..."
He paused here, glanced at her left wrist, and said sarcastically, "Yet you've been wearing the bracelet he gave you for all these years?"
"I was naive and immature in school. Last night was because I didn't see the number clearly. As for the bracelet..."
When it came to the bracelet, she hesitated.
In that moment, Alexander had already frowned, "What about the bracelet?"
"The bracelet wasn't from Chris."
"You think I'll believe that?"
Her expression changed slightly as she denied it again, "I said it wasn't, so it wasn't. What's there to lie about?"
Alexander looked at her scrunched-up face and actually found her words somewhat believable, so he nodded, "Fine, I believe you. Now, delete Chris's contact."
"No." Lila refused directly.
His cold voice sounded like a soul-claiming ghost in the dark night, "Say that again?"
