Chapter 61
Lila had only wanted to find an excuse to discourage Alexander from certain ideas, but when she heard him tell her to wash herself thoroughly, her face immediately showed discomfort.
She wasn't open enough to discuss sex with a man she'd only known for about a week.
While her mind was wandering, a sound reached her ears.
Lila snapped back to attention and realized Alexander had slammed his utensils down on the dining table.
He quickly got up and left the dining room.
Lila breathed a sigh of relief.
She really couldn't figure Alexander out. He clearly disliked her, yet he kept forcing himself to make her uncomfortable.
Lila didn't know whether to admire his spirit of self-sacrifice.
Also, they'd barely been married any time at all, and he was already starting to talk to her about having children?
If they really had a child and divorced after a year, what would happen to the kid?
Lila briefly thought through the possible scenarios.
Alexander had power and influence. After the divorce, he definitely wouldn't give her the child. But she would be the one who gave birth—ten months of pregnancy, only to barely be able to see the child afterward. Wouldn't she spend the rest of her life in pain, unable to see or be with her child?
If this was the price she had to pay for being married to him for a year, it would be too cruel.
Thinking about this, she quietly held her breath and silently made up her mind.
No matter what, she couldn't have a child with Alexander!
After making this decision, Lila didn't think about it further. She cleared the table and returned to her bedroom.
Back in the bedroom, she lay on the bed for a while. With so much on her mind, her brain didn't know which thing to think about first and just went blank.
10:30 PM.
Lila got up from the bed, grabbed her pajamas, and went into the bathroom.
Not long after she went in, her phone on the bed rang.
Alexander came out of his study at that moment and happened to pass by Lila's bedroom. Hearing a phone ringing inside but no one answering, he frowned slightly.
Who would be calling her this late?
Once this thought emerged, his curiosity became unstoppable.
He instinctively pushed open her bedroom door. After scanning the room and not seeing Lila, only hearing the sound of water from the bathroom, he confirmed she couldn't hear her phone because she was showering.
Alexander walked right into Lila's room.
The phone was on the bed, still ringing.
Alexander glanced at it. The caller ID showed a string of numbers with no name saved.
He normally never answered calls from unsaved numbers on his own phone, but today with Lila's call, he unusually made an exception and swiped to answer.
As soon as he put the phone to his ear, a voice came through, "Not asleep yet?"
It was a man!
Alexander immediately frowned.
At this hour, a man asking Lila about whether she was "asleep" with unclear intentions?
Anger surged in Alexander's chest without warning, making his tone aggressive when he spoke, "You know this is the time for sleeping?"
Hearing a man's voice on the other end, there was a two-second pause before the person asked suspiciously, "Who is this?"
"You're not qualified to know." After coldly throwing out that line, Alexander hung up.
He wanted to block and delete the number, but discovered Lila's phone had a password lock and wouldn't open.
In an instant, the pent-up frustration in Alexander's heart kept churning, and his hand gripping the phone tightened fiercely.
He didn't leave Lila's room. Instead, he walked over to the single sofa in the bedroom and sat down.
Alexander leaned back on the sofa, his face dark as he pulled out a cigarette pack from his pants pocket, took out a cigarette, and lit it.
In the bathroom, water kept flowing.
Lila was completely unaware of everything happening outside.
She didn't come out until half an hour later.
She turned off the faucet, changed into her pajamas, and pulled open the bathroom door to walk out.
The moment she stepped out, she saw a man sitting in the room. If Alexander's face hadn't been so distinctive, allowing her to recognize him with just a quick glance, she definitely would have screamed in fright.
Since she'd showered and was ready for bed, Lila was only wearing a nightgown.
Under the not-so-thick fabric, her good figure was outlined, creating an alluring sight that left much to the imagination.
