Chapter 201
The Sinclair Group is full of talented people. To rise from an intern to CFO, the hardships along the way are probably known only to Ms. Hill herself.
It seems her feelings for Alexander really run deep.
Lila felt a bit of admiration for her.
While driving, she glanced at Alexander. "So how did you respond to Ms. Hill?"
"Lila, are you even listening to me?"
"I am listening. Ms. Hill worked so hard and finally made it to CFO. She invited you to dinner and you kept turning her down. This time you finally agreed, so she must have gathered a lot of courage to confess her feelings. How did you respond to her?"
Alexander felt a bit helpless about what Lila was focusing on.
He brought up another woman confessing to him to show her how much he was worth liking.
He asked her what she would be willing to do if she fell for him.
But why was her attention on Ms. Hill who confessed to him instead?
Alexander rubbed his temples helplessly.
Finally, he answered her question, "I'm already married. What else could I say?"
"But you had to say something, right? Ms. Hill is so inspiring. It must have been really hard for her to get where she is. She's done so much for you. You couldn't just say nothing, right?"
"She said she liked me. I told her not to think about things that don't mean anything."
Lila felt sad for Ms. Hill.
That was too cruel.
She pressed on and asked, "Weren't you moved at all?"
"Why would I be moved?"
"You really are..."
Forgive her limited vocabulary. She searched her brain but couldn't think of a suitable word to describe him.
Lila felt a bit sorry for Ms. Hill.
She worked hard for years, and even after becoming CFO of the Sinclair Group, she still couldn't win over the man she liked.
In matters of the heart, there really is no fairness.
"Can you answer me now? If you liked me, what would you be willing to do for me?" Alexander brought up his original question again.
Lila was speechless and frowned. "Boss, don't you think asking that is pretty pointless?"
Alexander glanced at her sideways, with a look that said "How dare you."
She quickly continued. "It's a hypothetical question, so any answer I give would be hypothetical too. It wouldn't have any real value."
They happened to reach a red light. Lila hit the brakes, turned to look at him, her pretty almond eyes sparkling with amusement. "Boss, if you really want to know what I'd be willing to do for you if I liked you, you could try pursuing me and make me fall for you. Then you'd know, wouldn't you?"
Alexander raised his eyebrows in surprise, then scoffed, "You really dare to dream."
"Everyone has the right to imagine."
Alexander let out a cold laugh.
The light turned green. Lila drove on.
The car fell quiet again.
Alexander leaned back in the passenger seat, his eyes fixed on Lila's profile, watching her concentrate on the road, a faint smile playing at his lips.
Pursue her?
That was exactly what he had in mind.
After all, only after pursuing her, making her fall for him, and sleeping together could she possibly get pregnant.
Once she was pregnant, Grandma would tell him where Celeste was, and he could bring Celeste back.
Alexander's mind went there almost without hesitation.
But thinking further, about what would happen after Celeste returned, made the smile fade from his lips a bit.
He and Lila were husband and wife now.
After Celeste came back, how would he arrange things?
Should he have Celeste wait until the one-year agreement was up, then divorce Lila and marry her?
Or wait until Lila gave birth to their child before talking about divorce?
Alexander's gaze shifted away from Lila, and an indescribable feeling of irritation came from nowhere, making him uncomfortable.
