Chapter 116
Sophie was speechless. "What exactly do you want?"
"Nothing." He just wanted to see her angry yet helpless against him.
"Get in!" Sophie yelled again.
Matthew looked at her angry face and smiled.
Then he turned around and walked into the bedroom.
Only when he closed the door did Sophie breathe a sigh of relief.
She went to open the door.
"What took you so long to answer?" Emily walked in and immediately spotted the men's dress shoes by the entrance.
She glanced inside. "Matthew's here?"
"Yeah." Sophie didn't lie.
Emily paused. "Should I not come in then?"
"It's fine." Sophie said, "He's sleeping."
"Then it's even more inconvenient." Emily hesitated. "I should go. Don't want to disturb you two."
Sophie didn't really want to be alone with Matthew, especially now that he wasn't wearing any clothes.
If Emily left, who knows what he might try to do to her.
"You're not disturbing us." Sophie grabbed Emily's hand and pulled her inside. "I'm hungry, let's eat something quick."
Emily understood what her friend meant. She asked in a low voice, "You don't want to be alone with him?"
Sophie nodded.
Emily frowned, changed her shoes and walked in, glancing at the tightly closed bedroom door before sitting on the sofa and lowering her voice. "Didn't you just go on a trip together? Nothing happened?"
At the mention of this, Sophie felt uncomfortable.
"You've been married for over a year. It's totally normal for something to happen." Emily looked at her with a smile. "Has it changed your mind about the divorce?"
Sophie opened the takeout container and sat across from her. "No."
"Is he not good?"
Sophie glared at her. "You're a girl, why is your mind always on these things?"
Emily wagged her finger. "You're wrong. Being interested in sex is human nature. What's wrong with thinking about it openly? You used to be the same way, now you're acting all proper?"
Seeing Emily getting more and more into it, Sophie reminded her to keep her voice down.
It was fine to say whatever when there was no man around, but with a man inside, he might be eavesdropping.
"Alright." Sophie made her stop. "That's enough."
Emily looked back again. "Not calling him to eat together?"
"No."
Emily knew it wasn't good to stay too long. Even though Sophie wanted a divorce, they weren't divorced yet, right?
She couldn't disturb their alone time.
"I'm leaving, I have things to do this afternoon." Emily made an excuse.
Sophie cleaned up the food. "I'm going out too."
Emily stared at her. "What for?"
"Never mind." Sophie grabbed her bag and headed out.
Emily didn't know whether to laugh or cry. After closing the door, she asked, "What are you afraid of? Afraid he'll eat you alive?"
"I just don't want to be alone with him." Sophie pressed the elevator button.
Just thinking about his gaze made Sophie's heart race.
That guy Matthew used to be so restrained, acting like a gentleman. But that night it was like something suddenly clicked, and even during her period, he didn't let her off.
Her hand unconsciously moved.
She really couldn't look at these hands directly anymore.
"Is it that serious?" Emily didn't get it.
"Is your afternoon thing urgent? If not, let's go shopping together." Sophie knew Emily somewhat - if she really had something urgent, she wouldn't have had time to bring her food and eat with her.
Emily figured since she was already out, there was no need to keep pretending.
She drove to the city center to go to the mall.
"Your phone keeps ringing." Emily reminded her.
Sophie didn't need to look to know it was Matthew calling. She didn't answer.
Emily smiled. "He's fallen for you, but you're ignoring his true feelings."
"That's not it." Sophie thought Matthew had just gotten a taste and was now addicted.
More like he'd fallen for her body.
They stopped talking about Matthew, and Emily chatted about various interesting things as they wandered around.
"Look, look!" Suddenly, Emily pulled Sophie behind a pillar and pointed at the escalator ahead. "That scumbag Harold."
Sophie saw him.
Not only did she see Harold, she also saw Bella.
Bella wore a black dress, showing off her snow-white swan neck and slender arms, her long hair flowing over her shoulders, with a slim waist, smiling charmingly, looking elegant and gentle.
"Wasn't Harold abroad? How did they end up together?" Emily's face was full of questions.
Sophie couldn't figure it out either.
Was it a coincidence, or intentional?
"Matthew's ex and your ex. How crazy." Emily shook her head speechlessly. "But does this mean Bella won't be clinging to Matthew anymore?"
"Who knows."
She had no idea if they knew each other's background.
But none of it had anything to do with her.
Matthew's calls kept coming, about to blow up Sophie's phone.
Sophie didn't answer any of them, until her phone died and shut off.
"Now he's calling mine." Emily took out her phone and handed it to Sophie. "He seems really urgent, maybe you should answer? What if it's really something important?"
Sophie didn't believe he had anything urgent. "If you want to answer, answer it yourself."
Emily could tell Matthew was really anxious.
If she didn't answer, her phone wouldn't have any peace either.
"Hello."
"Let Sophie answer the phone." Matthew's tone sounded very calm, not like someone angry about being ignored.
Emily covered the phone and told Sophie, "He wants you to answer."
Sophie frowned. "I'm not answering."
"Just answer it. You're outside anyway, it's not like he can do anything to you." Emily handed her the phone.
Sophie thought about it and figured that made sense. She took the phone, put it to her ear, and spoke lazily and impatiently, "What?"
"Not coming back?" Matthew's tone was calm.
"Not for now." Sophie asked him, "Are you still not leaving?"
"Weren't we supposed to talk about the divorce?"
Sophie's brow tightened.
Seeing her frown, Emily didn't know what was happening.
"I'll give you half an hour. Miss this half hour, and we'll never discuss this again." Matthew had Sophie right where he wanted her.
Before Sophie could respond, Matthew had already hung up.
"What's wrong?" Seeing her serious expression, Emily asked, "What did he say?"
Sophie returned the phone to Emily. "I need to go back."
Emily was speechless.
Sophie didn't let Emily drive her. She took a taxi back to the complex. Before getting out, she specifically asked the driver for the time - there were still ten minutes left before Matthew's deadline. No rush at all.
She got out of the elevator, took a breath, and opened the door.
The living room was empty.
The bedroom door was still tightly closed. She glanced at the entrance - Matthew's shoes were still there.
She walked to the bedroom door and opened it.
On the bed, the man lay there with the blanket draped over his waist, his two long straight legs exposed, his chest also bare, hands pillowed behind his head, eyes closed - she couldn't tell if he was really asleep.
"Matthew." Sophie called him.
Right now, whether he was asleep or not, she had to make him keep his word.
Matthew didn't move.
Sophie walked over and called loudly, "Stop pretending to be asleep."
The man just wouldn't open his eyes.
Sophie anxiously pulled off the blanket covering him. After one glance, her face flushed red, and she quickly threw the blanket back, covering him again.
Matthew opened his eyes, taking in all her awkwardness and embarrassment.
Suddenly, he stretched out his arm, grabbed her wrist, and with a light pull brought her into his embrace, his hands wrapped around her back, holding her down so she couldn't get up.
Matthew's deep voice sounded in Sophie's ear, "Ever since I was old enough to understand, my mom taught me not to let a girl down. If I take advantage of someone, I have to take responsibility."
