Chapter 520
Chapter 520
The room temperature dropped sharply.
The nurse shivered involuntarily and glanced around, then spotted the man in the wheelchair.
He’d only started working at the hospital a couple days ago, so he didn’t recognize the guy. He figured the man looked like trouble and ignored him, turning back to Zola.
“I’ve told you so many times—when you sent this person to the hospital, I said to leave everything to me since I work here. But you didn’t trust me and brought in some outsider…”
His tone grew more accusing. “We’ve been friends for years. I’m not going to screw you over. Just sign this power of attorney and hand over full control of your brother’s situation to me. That way I can make decisions in an emergency.”
He shoved the document into Zola’s hands.
Zola’s head was buzzing. Her friend’s words kept echoing in her mind. Normally sharp, her brain now felt like complete mush. She understood every single word he said, but put together, none of it made sense.
After a long moment, she grabbed his arm in a panic. “Just tell me what’s going on. What happened to my brother?”
“Are you really that slow? Haven’t you figured it out yet? That guy you brought in to stop the bleeding? He’s useless. The bleeding still hasn’t stopped. Sign the papers already…”
The nurse dumped a bunch of documents into Zola’s hands, then shoved a pen at her, urging her to sign.
Still dazed, Zola moved on instinct and started signing. Just as she was finishing the last stroke, a hand suddenly gripped her wrist.
She turned and saw Sebastian staring at her coldly.
“You’re not even going to read it? You’ll sign anything?” His voice was icy. He shot the male nurse a disgusted look.
From the moment the nurse walked in, Sebastian had been watching him. It was obvious the guy had ulterior motives toward Zola—otherwise he wouldn’t have said all that nonsense.
Sebastian snatched the papers from her. One glance made the problem clear. These weren’t surgical consent forms at all. They were property holding agreements with no connection to the hospital. If she’d signed them, her assets would’ve been transferred away, leaving her with nothing.
He fixed the nurse with a cold stare.
The nurse felt a chill run down his spine, but he still tried to act tough. He lifted his chin and met Sebastian’s eyes.
“Mind your own business. Zola and I grew up together. I’m only here to get familiar with the environment at my family’s medical company. I studied abroad and we’re getting married soon. Stay out of it.”
He shot Sebastian a warning look, snatched the papers back, and pushed them at Zola again.
Zola wasn’t stupid. Even though her head was foggy, she clearly saw the words “property holding agreement” and couldn’t believe it. She tore the papers up and threw them back.
“You actually tried to scam me?”
“Why are you talking like that? We’re basically together now. What does it matter whose name the property is under? Sign it and I promise I’ll save your brother…”
The nurse grabbed Zola’s hand, trying to force her to sign.
Zola backed away and hid behind Sebastian. “What are you saying? If I don’t sign, you’ll hurt my brother?”
Her hand, hidden by her sleeve, quietly turned on her phone’s recording function. The move was subtle—nobody noticed except Sebastian, who caught it in his peripheral vision. He didn’t say anything, just silently maneuvered his wheelchair to keep Zola shielded behind him.
The nurse dropped the act. “You know I just took over after coming back from abroad. There are plenty of illegitimate kids at home eyeing the company. I had no choice. We grew up together—just help me out.”
He’d picked up some skills overseas, but to take real control back home, he needed help. Zola was the first person he thought of.
They’d been childhood sweethearts. When they were kids, they’d even played at getting married. In his mind, they were always going to end up together, and their families’ assets would merge.
As for Zola’s brother, he didn’t care. The guy had already started his own business and had his own money. So Zola’s assets were as good as his.
He looked at her with fake sincerity. “I know you can’t accept this right away, but I really had no choice. Those illegitimate siblings are watching me like hawks. Helping me helps you too. We’re protecting what’s ours for our future kids.”
Zola couldn’t take it anymore. Through gritted teeth she said, “So you were going to transfer my assets while I was distracted?”
They’d grown up together, completely trusting each other. She never expected him to turn out this rotten. If Sebastian hadn’t been here today, would he have taken everything?
The thought sent a chill through her.
Her eyes turned cold. “So if I don’t sign this, what then? You’ll let my brother die?”
“Don’t be ridiculous. I’d never do that. Everything I’m doing is for your own good. Why won’t you listen? Just sign already—there’s no time. Do you want your brother to die?”
The nurse said it like it was obvious, then turned and left. A few seconds later he was back with a fresh set of property agreements. Clearly he’d prepared plenty of copies. Even if she tore them up, there were more.
Zola was furious. “I’ll ask one more time. If I don’t sign, will you go after my brother?”
“Don’t push me. I’m out of options. My mom’s gone and I’m fighting alone. You’ve loved me since we were kids—you’ll understand, right? So just sign.”
“I’m asking again. If I don’t sign, will you hurt my brother?”
Their eyes locked in a silent standoff.
Zola’s gaze was icy, filled with deep hatred. She wasn’t looking at someone she’d grown up with—she was looking at an enemy.
