Chapter 191: Even a Hug Is Not Allowed
Chapter 191: Even a Hug Is Not Allowed
Olivia finished her work for the day and was getting ready to leave, but when she got a call from Jared, she still chose to go upstairs to find him first. "You just got back from your business trip, you should get some good rest."
"I'm sorry I couldn't help you." Jared felt very guilty. "If my plan had been more thorough, maybe Cameron Hayes wouldn't have discovered it so easily."
Hearing Jared refer to Cameron so formally, Something flashed in Olivia's eyes, finding it a bit odd.
Jared sighed. "Now that this failed, I don't know if there'll be another chance."
Olivia shook her head. After going through all that, she didn't want to go through with such a plan again.
"Since the plan has been discovered, let's just forget about it."
"No matter what, this isn't your fault. After all, everything happened so suddenly, and the plan had many flaws."
Jared still couldn't let it go easily, because he had almost been able to take Olivia away from Cameron's world. He had also planned to shift his work focus abroad.
He believed that as long as he had time alone with Olivia, he would definitely be able to win her over.
But Cameron had ruined it all.
Olivia comforted Jared, telling him not to dwell on this anymore.
"It's getting late, you should go home and rest."
"Let's have dinner together," Jared suggested. "It's after work now anyway, isn't it?"
Thinking about how Jared had been working so hard on the staged death plan and she couldn't repay him yet, Olivia agreed. "But I'm treating."
Jared nodded happily.
The two went to a nearby restaurant.
Jared brought up Justin's situation. "I only found out about this after I got off the plane. What exactly happened? Can't you reach Justin either?"
Trusting Jared, Olivia briefly told him about the situation.
"Although I don't know if Jennifer staged this whole thing herself, Justin absolutely couldn't have done something like this. Right now, a lot of evidence is missing, which clearly shows someone is deliberately framing him."
"Let's hope the police investigation turns up something new."
After understanding the situation, Jared frowned. "Olivia, I think we should have Justin turn himself in first, and deal with everything else later."
"Either way, Justin needs to cooperate with the police investigation, since he is a suspect after all."
Olivia thought the same way, but Cameron said it was fine and there was no rush. "But Cameron, he..."
"No, Olivia, we need to think about this logically." Jared interrupted her. "I don't know what Cameron is thinking, or what plan he has, or if he's discovered that this really was Jennifer's setup and is deliberately keeping Justin from turning himself in so he can do something to protect Jennifer?"
He paused. "Olivia, there's something you may never have known."
Olivia took in Jared's words, her expression darkening a bit. "Tell me, what is it?"
"On this business trip, I happened to run into a friend of Cameron's father, and that's when I learned that Cameron and Jennifer's engagement was arranged by their families' elders years ago." Jared had learned about this by chance. He originally didn't know the inside story of Cameron and Olivia's marriage, only finding out later, though not much.
Hearing this, Olivia just smiled bitterly.
Of course, she knew about this.
So her divorce from Cameron made perfect sense.
Jared's eyes flickered as he reached over to pat Olivia's hand.
It was just a light touch, but Olivia instinctively pulled her hand away.
The atmosphere instantly became awkward.
Olivia quickly apologized. "I'm sorry, I..."
"It's okay. That was inappropriate of me." Jared shook his head, indicating that Olivia shouldn't blame herself. "I just didn't know how to comfort you, so I thought I'd show it through action."
Olivia could barely accept Jared's explanation.
After all, this gesture seemed like something only female elders would do to younger people.
Of course, men could do it too; it was just rare.
But in public, it didn't seem like a big deal. Olivia didn't take it to heart and changed the subject, smoothly getting through dinner.
Before leaving, Olivia specially packed some food.
She was going to make a trip to the Hayes Group.
Kurt had just sent her a message saying Cameron had been busy all day and had barely eaten anything, and was still working now, completely ignoring everyone's advice.
For the sake of Cameron helping Justin, and because Olivia wanted to ask if Cameron had some other plan, she decided to go.
Learning that Olivia was going to see Cameron, Jared's expression darkened slightly, but he didn't have the standing to interfere too much with Olivia's actions.
"Then let me drive you there."
"Okay, thanks."
When they arrived, Jared had originally planned to go up with Olivia, but she told him to go home and rest early. "You must be exhausted from the long flight, and don't you have an early meeting tomorrow?"
Jared felt warm inside, thinking that Olivia still cared about him.
"How about this - I'll have my driver wait downstairs for you. Whenever you're ready to go home, you can leave. After all, it's not safe for you to take a cab alone this late at night."
Olivia didn't know what situation she'd face when she went up.
According to Kurt, Cameron should still be busy, so he probably wouldn't be able to drive her home, right?
"Okay, then I won't be polite about it."
After waving goodbye to Jared, Olivia took the elevator up to the top-floor executive office. When she pushed open the door, she found the lights were off inside, which made her heart race a bit.
"Cameron? Where are you? If you're here, say something."
But the office remained completely silent.
Just as Olivia was about to call Cameron, she heard his voice coming from a dark corner. "I'm here. Don't turn on the lights."
"Why not turn on the lights?" Olivia didn't understand, but fortunately, the moonlight from outside the floor-to-ceiling windows was bright enough that she could still move forward by moonlight without tripping.
She set down the thermal container she'd brought. "What's wrong with you?"
Cameron's voice carried deep fatigue. "I'm not feeling well. Can you come here?"
Olivia felt a pang of sympathy, involuntarily remembering Cameron from when he was still simple-minded. She softened and walked over. "If you're not feeling well, why didn't you go to the hospital? What's wrong?"
"Stomach pain." Cameron watched Olivia approach and reached out to hug her.
Olivia instinctively dodged - not because she wouldn't let Cameron hug her, but because if he hugged her, his face would press against her stomach, and he would definitely figure out she was pregnant.
Seeing Olivia dodge, Cameron froze. He looked at her in disbelief, his face full of hurt.
"Now I can't even hug you?"
Meeting Cameron's eyes, Olivia chose to look away. She felt guilty. "You're not feeling well; hugging me won't help. I should call a doctor for you."
Cameron's expression turned cold. "No need. You can go."
