Chapter 94
"Um... I just remembered I didn't close the door properly at home. I need to go back."
Before William could react, Emily forced a smile, made up a flimsy excuse, turned around and ran.
Watching her flee in panic, William instinctively reached out, wanting to call her back. "Emily..."
The moment the word left his mouth, he shut it again.
It was probably for the best that Emily left now. He needed some quiet time to sort through his thoughts.
For William, he could barely remember what had happened that year.
However, the memory of waking up the next day after getting drunk and seeing that crimson stain on the bed was still deeply etched in his mind.
If there really were that many coincidences in the world, then maybe the person from back then was Emily!
The moment this possibility emerged, William's heart pounded wildly in his chest, as if it was about to burst out.
This time, he definitely wouldn't miss the chance to uncover the truth.
He had always thought Aiden was abandoned, so he had no good feelings toward his nominal "mother" and naturally wouldn't waste effort investigating.
Later, when he wanted to investigate, several years had already passed.
He leaned back against the car seat, complex emotions churning in his eyes.
"Investigate immediately. Five years ago, October 10th, Harmony Healing Hospital, Emily's delivery records. The more detailed the better. I want to see results within ten minutes."
Investigating something with no leads might be difficult.
But with the time, place, people, and event all laid out so clearly, he didn't believe his assistant couldn't handle this.
His assistant's voice came through confirming, and William hung up.
Leaning against the car window, he lit a cigarette.
Through the swirling smoke, William's emotions couldn't settle for a long time.
If the person from that year really was Emily, what direction would things between them take next?
Did she know about Aiden's existence?
If she knew, why would she abandon Aiden?
But if she didn't know...
Chaotic thoughts kept churning in his mind. William stubbed out the cigarette and drove into the traffic.
On the other side, Emily hurried upstairs.
She got home, leaned against the door, gasping for breath, her back already soaked with cold sweat.
Emily felt her heart racing, the scene from just now replaying over and over in her mind.
So the person from that night was actually William?
If it was William, then Aiden...
The moment this thought emerged, Emily forcefully crushed it.
She didn't dare think about it, didn't want to think about it.
Right now she just felt a heavy weight on her chest, making it hard to breathe.
"Emily, what's wrong with you? Why are you running so fast, and why is your face so pale?"
Amelia's voice suddenly rang out, startling Emily.
Fortunately, she reacted quickly and made up an excuse. "Mom, I'm fine. It's just the wind downstairs was strong."
Her eyes were evasive, not daring to meet Amelia's gaze.
But how could Emily's panic escape Amelia's eyes?
She put down the building blocks in her hands, beckoned with her hand for Emily to sit beside her, her gaze gentle but with a hint of inquiry. "Did you say something to William? You just went out for a bit, how come you're back looking so lost?"
Faced with her question, Emily pressed her lips together and said nothing, feeling extremely flustered inside.
Seeing her like this, Amelia sighed softly, her tone gentle. "I can tell that William is a good person. He's thoughtful and genuinely cares about you and the kids. If you have feelings for him, don't hold back. What's the harm in trying?"
Faced with Amelia's gentle persuasion, Emily lowered her eyes slightly. "Mom, I don't want to talk about this right now. I'm a bit tired, I'll go rest in my room first."
Watching Emily stand up and leave, Amelia shook her head gently behind her, saying nothing more.
Matters of the heart weren't something outsiders could interfere with.
She only spoke up because she couldn't help herself, but the final decision still had to be Emily's own.
Back in her bedroom, Emily leaned against the headboard, sleepless all night.
On the other side, William didn't receive word from his assistant until the next day.
"Mr. Brown, it's been quite a while, so it took me until today to investigate clearly."
The assistant quietly yawned and placed the investigation results on William's desk.
"Mr. Brown, five years ago on October 10th, Emily gave birth in the delivery room on the third floor of the Maternal and Child Health Hospital. She delivered triplets. The boy-girl twins survived, but the eldest son was weak from birth and died shortly after. No related disposal records were kept."
Triplets.
Eldest son died.
No disposal records.
These words struck like thunder, exploding in William's mind.
Could Aiden be Emily's eldest son?
The truth was already emerging. William really didn't have the patience to keep waiting.
Rather than continue waiting here for results, he might as well go to the hospital and ask around.
If he were lucky, maybe he could even run into the nurse from back then.
With these thoughts, William couldn't sit still and immediately set out.
But just as he left, his subordinate's call came in.
"Mr. Brown, Henry seems to have discovered our organization. There are people acting suspiciously outside headquarters now, probably sent by him."
Hearing the deliberately lowered voice on the phone, William frowned.
He hadn't expected Henry to move so quickly.
After a brief hesitation, William made his decision. "I'm coming over now. If those people outside dare make any moves, take them down directly."
"Yes."
After a few simple exchanges, both sides agreed on a strategy and hung up.
William irritably slammed the steering wheel, feeling somewhat annoyed.
He had just wanted to investigate things clearly, and now this happened.
"You go investigate the hospital matter."
Seeing his assistant driving up behind him, William pulled over and assigned the hospital investigation to his assistant.
"Alright, Mr. Brown."
The assistant immediately agreed. "Mr. Brown, I'll contact you immediately with any results."
William nodded without saying more and got back in the car, heading in the other direction.
After he left, the assistant also drove away.
Emily still didn't know that William was secretly investigating Aiden's background.
She looked at the offer letter in her hand, unable to suppress the joy rising in her heart.
She actually found a job!
These past days, Emily had been troubled by not having a proper job, but unexpectedly today brought good news—and it was a job she could start immediately.
This way, she would have the means to support herself, the kids, and Amelia.
Emily hummed a tune, hurrying home eagerly.
She couldn't wait to share this good news with Amelia.
