Chapter 93
"Emily's focus is all on the kids and her career right now. It's totally normal that she doesn't want to think about relationships." As he said this, William's gaze fell on Emily.
His eyes had lost their usual depth and instead carried more clarity. "Relationships are all about timing. When the time is right, everything will fall into place naturally. You don't need to worry."
Amelia nodded gently at his words, seeming to agree. "You're right."
Hearing this, Emily instinctively looked up, only to meet William's gaze directly.
Her face quickly flushed red, and she hurriedly lowered her head, poking at the rice in her bowl without looking at William again.
William noticed her reddening ears, and the corner of his mouth curved slightly.
He didn't say more, just showed through his actions how much he cared about Emily and the children.
Looking at the small mountain piled on her plate, Emily was momentarily speechless.
But she knew William meant well, so she didn't say anything.
The children ate seriously, occasionally making little noises that made everyone laugh.
The dinner table returned to its earlier liveliness.
Watching this scene, Amelia's smile deepened.
She picked up her water glass and took a sip, already understanding the situation.
Some things didn't need to be spelled out.
However, from her quiet observation, the feelings between Emily and William would probably be revealed soon enough.
Emily kept her head down eating. The food still tasted good, but her heart couldn't settle down.
After dinner, Emily started clearing the dishes from the table.
"Let me help you." William reached for the plate in her hand, but Emily smoothly dodged him.
She looked at William, then lowered her eyes slightly. "You're a guest. Just relax."
William hadn't expected her to draw such a clear boundary between them, and his expression darkened.
Emily acted as if she hadn't noticed his mood and continued busying herself.
At that moment, Amelia was in the living room with the three children building blocks, their laughter occasionally filling the air.
When Emily finished cleaning the kitchen and walked out wiping her hands, William had already stood up.
He picked up his coat from the sofa, his tone flat. "It's getting late. I should head back."
Though he said this, his gaze on Emily still carried a trace of barely noticeable expectation.
Emily nodded, about to say "take care," but William spoke first, staring straight at her. "I'm leaving, and you won't even see me out?"
Emily was caught off guard by his question.
She instinctively glanced toward the living room.
Amelia and the children didn't seem to notice what was happening on their end.
She turned back to meet William's half-smiling gaze and finally gave in. "Alright, I'll walk you downstairs."
She told Amelia and followed William out the door.
The moment the door closed, the quiet of the hallway replaced the liveliness inside.
For a moment, only their footsteps echoed in the corridor.
The elevator descended slowly, and in the confined space, the atmosphere felt strangely delicate.
Emily deliberately looked away, staring at the reflection on the elevator floor, refusing to look at William beside her.
The elevator doors opened, and they walked out one after the other.
"You can go now. I won't see you any further." Emily stood in the lobby.
The evening breeze swept through her hair, bringing a touch of coolness.
William turned around, noticing she seemed to have something to say, and raised an eyebrow slightly. "Don't you have anything you want to say to me?"
Faced with his question, Emily's heart skipped a beat, her fingertips curling slightly.
Of course she had questions for William.
After all, this matter had been weighing on her heart for a long time.
It's just that the last time she asked, she hadn't gotten an answer.
Now that William had brought it up, she had no more reservations.
Emily looked up, meeting William's gaze directly.
She chose her words carefully, her tone carrying a cautious probing quality. "I just want to know, who is Aiden's mother?"
As soon as she said this, Emily's gaze locked onto William's face, afraid to miss any of his expressions.
Hearing this question, the smile on William's face instantly faded.
His gaze grew heavy, and after a long silence, he slowly spoke. "Aiden is a child I found. I never found his biological mother."
This answer was beyond Emily's expectations.
Her eyes widened in shock, her heart suddenly heavy.
What was going on?
Aiden clearly looked almost identical to Oscar. In the dead of night, Emily had countless times thought he was her Aiden who had died young.
But William said he didn't know who Aiden's biological mother was.
Thinking of this, Emily lowered her eyes slightly, her mood inexplicably heavy.
Seeing her somewhat disappointed expression, William's brow furrowed.
He looked toward the distant streetlights, his thoughts seeming to drift back several years.
He instinctively reached into his pocket for a pack of cigarettes, then glanced at Emily and silently put them back. "Five years ago, I was at the hospital handling some personal matters. When I finished and was about to go home, a nurse on duty carrying a baby bumped into me."
At this point, his gaze became distant, as if his thoughts had truly drifted back to that time.
"I thought the nurse was stealing a child, but it turned out the baby had been abandoned because he was weak. When I heard this, I felt sorry for him and took him home." William spoke lightly, but Emily felt as if she'd been struck by lightning.
She froze in place, her blood nearly freezing.
Harmony Healing Hospital, several years ago in late autumn, early morning!
These words were like little hammers pounding hard on her heart.
Emily's lips trembled slightly, and she looked at William with a mix of hope and disbelief. "Where exactly did you find him?"
William saw her somewhat agitated state and was momentarily confused.
But he had no intention of hiding anything.
"Five years ago, October 10th in the early morning, I took him from the third floor of Harmony Healing Hospital."
Hearing his answer, Emily's heart raced so fast it nearly burst from her chest.
She staggered back a step, gripping the nearby railing to barely steady herself.
She looked at William, speaking word by word. "Five years ago, on the morning of October 10th, I gave birth to Oscar and Nina in the delivery room on the third floor of Harmony Healing Hospital."
As soon as she said this, both fell silent.
The air seemed to freeze in that moment.
What was going on?
Could Emily and Aiden really be connected?
And hadn't she only given birth to Oscar and Nina?
Questions swirled in William's mind, while Emily seemed shocked, suddenly stepping back.
