Chapter 70
Does Sophia have any conscience left?
Suddenly, Emily grabbed William, her expression urgent.
"Isn't this recording evidence? Since the police restored it, they should know that Sophia is the kidnapper. Why haven't they arrested her yet? Why do you say this doesn't count as evidence? What's going on? Tell me clearly!"
"Emily, calm down first."
William glanced toward the bedroom. "The kids are here. Don't be too loud, or if they hear you, Nina will get scared again."
"Come, sit down. Let me explain slowly."
"It's not that complicated. Simply put, after hearing the recording, the police also believe Sophia is the kidnapper. They summoned her to the police station for questioning according to the law, and all procedures were legal and proper."
"But Sophia refused to admit it. She insisted the voice wasn't hers and that someone was deliberately framing her. No matter how the police questioned her, she wouldn't confess."
"What good does her denial do?"
Emily couldn't help but interrupt William. "This recording is evidence. If there's evidence, they should arrest her."
"Today she dared to kidnap Nina—who knows what she'll do next time? Do we have to wait until she causes a major disaster before they can arrest her? Won't it be too late by then?"
William nodded. "That's true, but one piece of evidence isn't enough to solve a case. So far, the only evidence the police have is this recording, and the original recording was voice-altered."
"Although the police used technical processing to restore the original voice, it can no longer be used as evidence."
Emily's heart sank. "So the police let Sophia go again, right?"
William stared at her for a few seconds and nodded gently.
Emily swayed, nearly fainting from anger.
"Emily, the police are just following regulations."
William tried to persuade her: "With only one piece of evidence—the recording—they really can't convict Sophia."
"According to the law, without sufficient evidence, they can only detain someone for twenty-four hours at most before releasing them. The police have no choice."
Emily fell silent.
On the kitchen table sat a pile of ingredients that William had bought. According to the original plan, Emily would cook a delicious meal at noon today, and the family would enjoy a happy time together with laughter.
But now her good mood was completely ruined.
"Emily, are you okay?"
William was very worried about her. "Don't be so discouraged. Maybe there's still hope for this case?"
"The police know that Sophia is the one who kidnapped Nina. Right now, they're working hard to collect more evidence. I believe it won't be long before the police succeed, and Sophia won't be able to escape."
But no matter what William said, Emily's mood remained flat, as if she hadn't heard what he was saying.
Seeing her like this, William didn't dare say much more.
Before coming, William had wondered whether he should tell Emily about this. If he did, she would definitely be unhappy and angry.
But if he didn't, sooner or later Emily would find out anyway, and she would still be upset. In that case, he might as well tell her himself.
Emily remained silent for a long time, many emotions flashing through her heart—a mix of feelings.
This world was so unfair. The real suspect was right in front of them, but they couldn't do anything about her. Where was the justice in that?
If they let Sophia off easily this time, given Sophia's personality, she would definitely come after her and the kids again.
If Sophia only targeted her, that would be fine—she wasn't afraid at all. What she feared was that the children would be harmed.
Since childhood, Sophia had always bullied her. She never expected that now, even though their lives had taken completely different paths, she still couldn't escape Sophia's influence. It was so unfair.
After a long while, Emily raised her hand to wipe the cold tears from her face, took a deep breath, and steadied herself.
"You're right. The police are just following the law. They've done their best."
"Emily, do you really think so?"
William frowned slightly, feeling that something was off about Emily's mood.
She had been so worked up just now—how could she have come to terms with it so quickly? Was she planning to do something behind his back?
Emily smiled slightly. "What I said is what I truly think. Whether you believe me or not doesn't matter, but I can't let Sophia off like this."
She clenched her fists and gritted her teeth.
Why should Sophia be so arrogant? She had hurt Nina so badly yet could walk away unscathed. Was there such a good deal in this world?
This time, Sophia got lucky and escaped, but next time, she would only become more aggressive.
Although people who do evil will eventually face consequences, Emily didn't want her children to be sacrificed for Sophia to be punished.
Since this matter had already come to light, she had to find a solution quickly.
William understood what Emily meant. Seeing the determination in her eyes, his heart shook violently. "Emily, what are you planning to do?"
He grabbed Emily's shoulders. "Whatever you decide, you should tell me. Let's figure it out together, okay?"
Emily pushed him away and smiled coldly. "What can I do? Kill her? Of course I won't do that. Murder is illegal. I'm not that stupid."
"Then what do you want to do?"
Emily bit her lip and took William's phone, her cold smile deepening.
"I'm going to let the internet get justice for me. Right now, Sophia must be feeling very smug. The police can't do anything to her, so she must be greatly relieved. Since this approach doesn't work, I'll use the power of public opinion."
She would ruin Sophia's reputation and make Sophia think twice. The next time Sophia wanted to harm her and the children, she would have to hold back.
This was the only way Emily could think of to protect herself and the children, but she believed she was taking the right step.
William saw the determination in Emily's eyes and understood everything. Indeed, Sophia needed to be taught a lesson. She was so arrogant, even toying with the police.
Although William wasn't present when Sophia was summoned to the station, he had connections at the police department.
According to his friend, Sophia was very smug. She probably knew the police didn't have enough evidence and didn't take their questioning seriously at all. She was certain she would be released and wasn't nervous at all. She was so arrogant—she deserved to pay a price.
"William."
Emily suddenly called his name very seriously, looking up at him directly. "Do you think I'm a heartless woman?"
In others' eyes, she and Sophia were half-sisters. Although they had never gotten along, they were still blood relatives.
Now Emily was doing this to Sophia. Even if some people understood her, everyone thought differently.
