Chapter 69
There's no helping it—Emily is just too popular now. She's practically become a household name.
There are even tons of people online calling Emily "mom." Who knows what kind of internet meme that is?
Emily didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
She really was getting old, unable to keep up with these new trends.
"Mommy, what's going on?" Oscar came out of the room. "I think I heard someone at the door."
"Someone did come—a director, actually."
Emily spread her hands helplessly.
Oscar frowned in displeasure, clearly unhappy. "These people are really something. They see Mom get popular from a variety show and try to copy it. Don't they realize that the same trick doesn't work twice?"
"Yes, our Oscar is so smart to understand that."
Emily picked Oscar up and kissed him on the cheek. "What do you want for lunch? Mommy will make it for you."
Oscar was about to answer when the doorbell rang again.
Will these people ever stop!
One after another—she hasn't had a decent night's sleep in days.
If this keeps up, she'll have to move again.
But she paid a full six months' rent here. If she moves, won't all that remaining money go to waste? The landlord won't refund the rest of the rent.
Even though Emily now has several hundred thousand dollars in her account, she can't just throw money around like that!
The doorbell kept ringing.
It seemed as if Emily didn't open the door; whoever was outside wasn't going to leave.
She had no choice but to put Oscar down and go open the door, ready to repeat what she'd just said to Willie.
But when the door opened, it wasn't someone else standing there—it was William.
The words Emily had prepared came out uncontrollably: "Sorry, I don't want to do variety shows, and I won't in the future either. You should just go back... William!"
"Are you talking about me?"
William pointed at himself questioningly, his eyes smiling.
It only took him a few seconds to figure out what was going on, but he decided to play along.
"So Ms. Johnson doesn't want to do variety shows. How about TV dramas or movies?"
"I happen to have a suitable script, perfect for Ms. Johnson. And Ms. Johnson, you have such a great image—such beauty shouldn't go to waste."
"At your age, if you did a TV drama, you'd definitely become an instant hit. I believe Ms. Johnson's acting skills won't disappoint me."
"William, are you kidding me?"
Emily gave him a playfully annoyed look, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
Actually, William did a pretty good job imitating those directors.
William laughed too, pushed the door open, and walked in, putting down what he was carrying. "Looks like those directors have been bothering you a lot lately?"
"You bet. They keep coming, one after another. I can't get rid of them."
Emily sighed helplessly, gesturing with her hands. "The director who just came was the sixth one. I really don't know how many more will show up. Do you think I should move?"
"But I'm a bit reluctant. I just got used to living here, and now I'd have to leave."
"Plus, even if I move, I probably can't escape them. I have no idea how they found my address."
"Fame brings trouble!"
Emily shook her head in distress.
She really wasn't cut out to be a celebrity. She'd only gotten a little bit famous and already felt her life was seriously affected.
She wondered how those A-list and even super A-list celebrities managed to get through it.
William smiled knowingly. "Don't worry about all that for now. I bought some stuff and groceries. We can cook a big meal together for lunch."
Oscar was still sitting nearby. William walked over and looked at him with a smile. "Oscar, your mom is so stressed out. Have you been comforting her?"
Oscar glanced up at him, then quickly looked away. "Of course."
"Really? Oscar is so great. How did you comfort your mom?"
"Not telling you."
William laughed. "Okay, if you don't want to say, I won't ask. How's Nina doing? Come on, take me to see her. I brought her a present!"
He shook a small box. "And not just Nina—you and Aiden have presents too. Let's see if you like them."
He pulled Oscar into the room.
Emily walked over and sat on the sofa, looking completely defeated.
It seemed William couldn't help her either.
So should she move or not?
If she really moved, where could she go?
Even if she had money, she couldn't just throw it around!
Although at the moment, Emily could afford to rent a really nice place, or even make a down payment on a house.
But she hadn't found a new job yet and didn't know what the future held. She had to budget carefully.
William really had brought gifts for the kids.
Nina was quite happy to see William. He stayed in the room chatting with her for a while before coming out about ten minutes later.
It was now after 10 a.m. Emily put on an apron, ready to go to the kitchen to make lunch, but William stopped her.
"There's something I want to tell you. It's about Nina."
Hearing it was about Nina, Emily's expression froze. She immediately guessed.
"You mean the person who hurt Nina has been caught, right?"
Anger flared in her eyes. "Is it Sophia? Am I right?"
William paused for two seconds, then nodded.
"It is her, but there's not enough evidence to convict her."
"How can there be no evidence?" Emily was shocked.
"Don't get upset yet."
William tried to calm her, pulling out his phone and playing a recording.
When she heard the voice, Emily was completely stunned.
That voice really was Sophia's!
The recording she'd heard before had been processed afterward, completely masking the original voice.
But she and Sophia were "sisters" after all. They'd known each other for so many years. She'd thought it sounded a lot like Sophia even then.
The police had ways to restore the kidnapper's original voice. What William was playing now was the restored version.
"It really is..."
Emily covered her mouth, gasping, her eyes instantly filling with angry, bloodshot veins.
Sophia!
That woman just couldn't stand her and constantly opposed her.
But Sophia should never, ever have targeted the kids!
This time, Nina was just lucky that nothing happened.
Emily didn't dare imagine what would have happened to Nina if she hadn't found her in time.
Maybe she'd never see Nina again!
Where would Nina have been taken? How would she have been hurt?
Just thinking about it broke Emily's heart.
Emily forced herself to listen to the entire recording. Just hearing Sophia's voice, she could imagine what expression Sophia must have had saying these things.
She must have been so pleased with herself!
Sophia was so cruel—Nina was just a child. How could she target a child!
