Chapter 28
Early morning sunlight streamed through the window as Emily finished getting ready to head out, only to find a woman in a business suit waiting at her door.
"Hello, may I ask who you are?" Emily asked hesitantly, her eyes showing some confusion.
"You must be Ms. Johnson, right?"
Unlike Emily, the woman's response was quite enthusiastic, directly reaching out to shake her hand.
"Let me introduce myself first. I'm the director of Funshine Preschool. My name is Willow Reed. I'm here today about enrolling the two children."
Willow looked like a typical career woman and spoke very directly.
After a brief introduction and explaining her purpose, Emily remained guarded.
"I don't recall submitting my children's applications to your preschool."
Despite this, Emily was still full of suspicion toward her.
She naturally knew that Funshine Preschool was the best preschool in Emerald City.
But the children who attended there all came from wealthy or prestigious families.
Emily didn't think she had the means to send her two children there.
Facing her doubts, Willow wasn't surprised and just smiled in response.
"Of course, you didn't submit your children's applications to our preschool, but we naturally have our own sources of information. As far as I know, these two children have extremely strong learning abilities and exceptional talents, which is why we came specifically to invite them to enroll." What Willow was implying was that they hoped to use these two children's good grades to build their preschool's reputation.
But Emily wasn't a fool.
This preschool had a long history and was highly regarded in Emerald City.
Why would such a preschool need high-achieving children as living advertisements?
Unless they had other plans.
"Ms. Reed, please go back. I don't have such plans at the moment. The two children are only four years old now, waiting a bit longer won't hurt." Emily politely declined her invitation and turned to close the courtyard gate.
"Ms. Johnson, won't you reconsider?" A hint of anxiety crept into Willow's eyes.
She hadn't expected that, even after coming in person, Emily would still refuse her.
After all, Funshine Preschool wasn't a place just anyone could get into.
Their enrollment for this year was already full. If it weren't for the message from William's people and their willingness to donate a building as an investment, Oscar and Nina wouldn't have been able to get in at all.
With such a great opportunity right in front of her, Emily was refusing it - this was truly unbelievable.
More importantly, if these children didn't enroll, the preschool wouldn't get that building.
Although their preschool already had a large campus and didn't really need this building, more was always better.
"Ms. Johnson, please reconsider. After all, the future is very important for children. If they can attend a good preschool, it will definitely help them." Willow took a deep breath, her smile unchanged.
"Ms. Reed, your words are vague, and you won't even reveal the real reason. Why should I trust you?" Emily's gaze was sharp, and the smile on her face faded.
When it came to the children's future, she wasn't unmoved, but this invitation came in such a strange way.
Seeing that Emily wasn't easy to fool, Willow fell silent for a moment. "Ms. Johnson, although I can't tell you why these two children got admission spots, someone is indeed helping behind the scenes."
She adjusted her glasses, and this time her words seemed much more credible.
"Is it someone I know?" Emily pressed, but Willow refused to answer further.
"I've told you everything I can. If you insist on not letting the two children enroll, then I can only say it's a real shame." Willow wore a gentle smile, her tone neither humble nor arrogant.
Their preschool didn't absolutely need this building.
It was just that given the Brown family's extensive influence in Emerald City, they didn't want to offend such a family.
But if Emily kept refusing, Willow had no choice - after all, she'd done what she was supposed to do.
"Can you give me your contact information so I can think about it?" After a moment of silence, Emily inevitably felt tempted.
She didn't care what the person behind this wanted, but the fact that Willow had come in person proved the enrollment invitation wasn't fake.
Willow nodded, took out a business card from her bag, and handed it to her. "I'll wait for your response, hoping for good news."
With that, she got in her car and left.
Watching the car drive away, Emily tightly clutched the thin business card in her hand, her heart filled with mixed feelings.
She really couldn't figure out who was secretly helping her.
"Mommy, what were you talking about outside?" Nina came out, rubbing her sleepy eyes, only seeing Emily standing outside the courtyard.
She had just heard Emily talking with someone, which woke her up.
"Nothing." Emily ruffled Nina's hair and asked with a smile. "Yesterday you said you didn't want to go to preschool, but today there's a really good preschool - do you want to go?"
Nina immediately woke up when she heard about going to preschool.
She made a sad face, pouting. "If you want me to go, then I'll go."
Seeing her being so obedient and understanding, Emily didn't say anything more.
She had taken yesterday off, and after Rodolfo learned the reason, he gave her an extra day off, so today she could stay home and spend time with the children.
Of course, Emily could also choose to go out and look for other, more suitable preschools.
"Go get ready."
Hearing this, Nina nodded and ran off.
Emily sat alone in the courtyard, her heart full of mixed feelings.
"What are you thinking about?" After these past few days of adjustment, William could now get on and off his wheelchair independently.
As he wheeled over, he vaguely saw Emily sitting on a stone bench in the courtyard, seemingly lost in thought.
Facing William's question, Emily sighed softly and shared her worries. "The two children are now old enough for preschool, but I haven't found a suitable one yet. Today, the director of Emerald City's best preschool came personally to invite them, but I feel a bit uneasy about it. I'm not sure if it's some scheme by the Johnson family."
As Emily finished speaking, William understood.
These past days, he had witnessed Sophia coming to trouble Emily repeatedly, so he naturally understood why she would have such concerns.
