Chapter 143
On the surface, it seems pretty good, but actually, all that is just an act to please his mommy. It's disgusting.
Once Nina got started, she couldn't stop. She counted on her fingers, "Mr. Brown buys us yummy food and never gets angry at us."
"Most importantly, he listens to us and is very patient. We've never seen him lose his temper. He's really, really a good person."
Emily's eyes lit up slightly. "Nina, this is the first time I've heard you praise someone like this. You said so much all at once. How come I've never heard you say these things before?"
"Because you never asked."
At this point, Nina's voice suddenly dropped. "Most importantly, I didn't dare say these things in front of you."
"Why not?"
Emily's heart skipped a beat. Had she done something wrong?
She saw Oscar and Nina exchange glances, and Oscar sighed.
"Mommy, every time we ask who daddy is, you never say anything. Sometimes you even cry when you're alone. We see all of this."
"Although I don't know what happened between you and daddy, I can feel that you really don't want to talk about him, so we've never dared to bring it up."
Emily's heart ached with pain.
She had thought the children had stopped mentioning their father because they had gradually gotten used to it, so she never paid much attention to it.
Only today did she realize how much the children longed for a father's love.
"Oscar, Nina."
Emily reached out and pulled both children into her arms. "I'm sorry. It's my fault. I've let you down."
She had so much she wanted to say, yet didn't know what to say. Her heart ached terribly.
"Mommy, don't cry."
Nina raised her hand to wipe away Emily's tears.
"We're already used to not having a daddy. I also know that the reason you're not with daddy must be because daddy did something to hurt you, so you don't want him."
Her chubby little hands wiped her face gently, her movements soft and her tone careful.
"Don't be sad, mommy. Aren't we doing just fine together? With mommy loving us so much, we don't want anything else."
"No, Nina. This is what I owe you."
Emily held Nina tightly, sobbing uncontrollably.
She had never thought about finding the children's biological father. Whether or not she knew that person was William, she had never had such thoughts.
Because she knew that in this vast world, it would be impossible to find him. And even if she did, what then?
She had no feelings for that man. Their only connection was the children.
But they wouldn't be happy together like this. She didn't want her children growing up in such an environment, so Emily gave up.
But only today did she understand how much the two children longed for a father's love.
Emily kept saying she was sorry, feeling terrible inside.
She cried for a while before slowly stopping.
Oscar spoke up, "Mommy, you suddenly brought this up - have you found our daddy?"
He was clever, getting straight to the point right away.
Emily wiped her tears. "Do you want a father?"
Oscar didn't answer Emily's question directly. Instead, he said, "Mommy, is our biological father Mr. Brown?"
"How did you know?"
Emily was shocked.
She had never told the two children. Had they overheard their conversation?
"Mommy, I guessed."
Oscar grinned. "Mr. Brown is very good to us. You said no one is nice to others for no reason - there must be a motive."
"But we're just kids. What could Mr. Brown want from us?"
"Besides, I can tell that Mr. Brown is genuinely good to us, not just putting on a show."
"If he's our biological father, then his kindness toward us makes sense. It must be instinct."
Emily gasped. It was hard to imagine these words coming from a child's mouth, but Oscar was absolutely right.
"Mommy, is Mr. Brown really our biological father?"
Nina looked up, her eyes full of longing.
Emily paused, then nodded seriously and solemnly. "That's right. He is your biological father."
What surprised Emily was that even after she gave them the answer, the two children showed no surprise on their faces. Instead, they smiled brightly, looking absolutely delighted.
"Mommy, you're amazing!"
Nina suddenly said this.
Emily was stunned. "What do you mean?"
Nina said excitedly, "Isn't it amazing that mommy could be with someone as excellent as daddy?"
Emily's mouth twitched. She was speechless.
But Oscar was right. William was indeed excellent, even though them being together was a mistake.
But after all these days of interaction, she could feel that William was a really good person.
Never mind anything else, he respected her and never forced her to do things she didn't want to do.
Most importantly, he protected her. Whenever she needed him, William would always appear.
Although his attitude was always cold, to Emily, she didn't care what William said. She cared more about what William did.
Now the result was obvious. After spending so much time with William, he had only disappointed her once.
But that one time was because he really couldn't get away, not because he did it on purpose.
Thinking of this, Emily's heart stirred. The idea of trying to be with William came to her mind. Maybe it wasn't impossible to give it a try.
But quickly, Emily pushed this thought out of her mind.
Try what? What's there to try?
What kind of existence was the Brown family?
Never mind that Emily was just an ordinary person now - even if she were a real socialite, she probably wouldn't be worthy of William, let alone marry into the Brown family.
Emily knew her place and what was realistic for someone of her background.
No, she couldn't be with William.
Emily unconsciously shook her head.
The gap in their status was too great. Forcing themselves to be together wouldn't bring happiness. There would be too many difficulties to overcome.
But if she didn't get together with William, would she really find a stepfather for Oscar and Nina?
Ignoring their real father to find the children a stepfather - what kind of weird idea was that?
Emily was truly caught in a dilemma now.
Seeing the two children still staring at her expectantly, Emily took a deep breath, temporarily setting aside the messy thoughts in her mind, and smiled gently at the two children.
"That's right. Mr. Brown is indeed your biological father."
