Chapter 131
Emily hadn't slept well these past few days, and last night had been even worse.
She had wanted to take a nap in the afternoon, but she was afraid something might happen to William while she was asleep, so she forced herself to stay awake.
William shook his head. "Nothing major, I'm just worried someone might take me away."
Emily was startled. "You mean your people?"
When she saw William nod, Emily bit her lip lightly, hesitated for a moment, and then suddenly smiled.
"Actually, I'd be relieved if they took you away. That would make things easier for me."
William looked at her. "Is that what you really think?"
"Of course."
Emily slowly lowered her head, her voice growing very soft. "Your people protecting you would be more useful than me staying here with you."
She spoke so quickly that William didn't catch it clearly. Emily hadn't planned to let him know anyway, and quickly put on a cheerful face.
"Let's not talk about this now. I'll go get the food."
With that, she turned and left, returning in less than two minutes with food in her hands.
"The doctor said you need to eat something light after waking up, so I bought these. See if they suit your taste. If you don't like them, I can go downstairs and buy something else."
Emily set down the food container and handed William a fork, but he didn't take it.
"What's wrong?"
William tilted his head, looking weak and helpless, and glanced at his own arm. "I can't move."
Emily curiously followed his gaze. "How can that be? Hasn't the anesthesia worn off?"
William looked very weak. "My arm hurts a lot. Even the slightest movement pulls at the wound. Looks like I won't be able to eat this meal."
He shook his head with a bitter smile.
Emily understood.
That was right. William had been injured so badly that he couldn't recover quickly.
Even the doctor had said his wounds would need at least ten days to two weeks of rest to start healing. Expecting a patient like him to eat on his own right after surgery was indeed asking too much.
"It's okay, I'll feed you."
Emily picked up the bowl and sat down in front of William.
She had experience feeding children, so her movements were very sure and practiced. After mixing the food, she scooped up a spoonful and held it in front of William.
"Come on, open up."
Emily's tone was gentle, just like when she was with Oscar and Nina.
She didn't notice the slight upturn at the corner of William's mouth, as if his plan had succeeded.
But he still looked weak on the surface, slowly sitting up and clutching Emily's hand as he swallowed a bite.
"How is it? Does it taste all right?"
William nodded, but quickly shook his head. "Not as good as what you make."
Emily didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "What are you saying at a time like this?"
"I'm telling the truth."
William looked at her seriously. "You can tell right away this food was bought from outside. It's not very good. If possible, I'd still rather eat food you make yourself."
Emily rolled her eyes at him. "You scared me half to death, and now you're complaining I don't have enough to do? Where would I find time to cook for you?"
"Then we'll talk about it when I'm better."
William responded at once. "There's no rush anyway. I'll just stay here and recover properly."
Emily was about to say no, but William had already swallowed the food and opened his mouth, waiting to be fed again.
Emily sighed helplessly and fed him spoonful by spoonful.
Although it was troublesome, seeing William eat so contentedly made her happy.
However, this act was quite intimate. Besides the two children, Emily had never fed anyone else like this.
The feeling was complicated and made her feel a bit awkward. She didn't dare make eye contact with William.
After barely finishing the meal, Emily washed the dishes and took them back to the kitchen, then sat down in front of William.
"What are your plans now?"
William glanced outside.
It was completely dark now. Outside, car horns and the noise of pedestrians filled the air, bringing him a strange sense of peace.
After a long while, William said softly, "I want to go back to the Brown Mansion."
"Back to the Brown Mansion."
Emily raised an eyebrow and nodded. "That's good. When are you planning to go back? Will it be safe for you to return to the Brown Mansion now?"
"Won't Clarence be waiting for you? What if he tries to trap you?"
William sneered disdainfully. "If he wants to trap me, he'll have to see if he can. I'm not that easy to defeat."
William let out a long breath. "Clarence has done many bad things, and I've collected almost all the relevant evidence."
"If I hand it over to the police, he definitely won't have a chance to recover. But I don't plan to do that right now."
He raised an eyebrow slightly. "Once Clarence knows I have evidence of his crimes, he'll definitely fight back desperately."
"Although he's very clear about it now, he and I haven't officially broken things off yet, so there's still room for negotiation."
Emily was confused. "But even so, what's the use? Didn't you set up that organization to collect evidence of Clarence's crimes?"
"Even I know that, so Clarence must know it too. Whether you admit it or not, that won't change. I think he'll definitely keep coming after you."
"So what? He has no evidence."
William raised an eyebrow slightly. "I've already decided. Once my injuries heal, I'll return to the Brown Mansion. Some things will happen in the Brown family then, and I might not be able to contact you for a long time."
When he said this, William's voice dropped, with a hint of reluctance.
He had grown used to the peaceful life outside. When he was with Emily, it was as if all the disputes of the Brown family had nothing to do with him, and he never felt his days were hard.
But he also knew clearly that this peaceful life wouldn't last long. As a member of the Brown family, he would have to return sooner or later, and then he and Emily would have to part ways.
And this was what William was most reluctant to give up.
No one had ever made him feel so peaceful inside, as if all the chaos of the world had moved away from him and couldn't harm him.
He didn't have to fight others tooth and nail or live a life of constant danger.
But now Clarence was becoming increasingly arrogant, not even respecting Raymond.
If he didn't go back, who knew what might happen at home? If something serious happened and he wasn't there in time, he would hate himself for it.
So going back was inevitable; it was just a matter of when.
After listening, a hint of worry appeared in Emily's eyes.
But she knew William wouldn't easily change his mind once he had decided, so she could only nod. "Since you've decided, I don't have much else to say."
"But no matter what, recovering is the most important thing now. Don't think too much. Focus on healing first. When you're better, I'll see you off."
