Chapter 238 Look Down on Elizabeth
Chapter 238 Look Down on Elizabeth
Claire came from a distinguished background, having studied abroad for many years and holding impressive academic credentials. That was how she married into the Moore family.
Claire knew a bit about Elizabeth from Skyhaven City.
Three years ago, Elizabeth's reputation was already in shambles. Then, a few months ago, she returned, and the Perez family's scandals became public knowledge. She even managed to bring her father to ruin.
The Perez family was quite prominent locally, but now, under Elizabeth's influence, it had completely fallen apart.
Claire feared that Elizabeth marrying into the Moore family would cause similar chaos.
Moreover, Elizabeth had a half-sister, who was Claire's main concern.
Claire had always disliked illegitimate children and the disputes they brought. She didn't want Matthew to marry someone who would bring such trouble into their lives.
The current head of the Moore family would never agree to let their carefully groomed heir be ruined by someone as troublesome as Elizabeth.
Claire would rather see Matthew with Nova, someone she knew well and who was obedient. At least that way, things would be quieter and less dramatic than with the Perez family.
In the end, Claire simply couldn't stand Elizabeth.
Matthew pressed his lips together, surprised by Claire's resolute stance. But he felt compelled to clarify things about Nova.
"I didn't lie to you, Mom. Nova deceived you. She's been trying to win your favor, which is why you trust her so much. But you've been kept in the dark."
Claire was taken aback by this revelation and looked to an assistant for help.
The assistant nodded, "Mrs. Moore, Mr. Moore is telling the truth. Nova is extremely obsessive. Her infatuation with Mr. Moore has driven her to madness."
Claire was shocked and found it hard to believe.
She had watched Nova grow up. When Claire was hospitalized recently, Nova had taken care of her.
Claire had almost accepted Nova as her future daughter-in-law and was ready to support her. Now, she was being told it was all a lie.
It was hard to accept, and Claire struggled to believe it.
Matthew understood that this news was difficult for Claire to process, so he didn't rush her. He guided her into the estate, patiently explaining.
"I know you want me to surpass Francis in every way."
"But I believe Elizabeth is an exceptional girl. Her background and public opinion don't define her. To me, she's a treasure. Marrying her would be an honor."
For years, Claire had seen Matthew alone and wondered if he even liked girls.
Hearing him speak so earnestly about Elizabeth made her realize he was ready to take on the responsibilities of a man.
Regarding Matthew's marriage, Claire sighed and relented.
"Marriage is your affair. You'll spend your life with your future wife, so I respect your decision."
"My relationship with your father wasn't built on deep feelings. When I found out he had an older illegitimate son, I regretted following my family's arrangement to marry a man who didn't love me."
Claire had experienced the tragedy of a woman's life in marriage.
Her husband, Nolan Moore, who loved another woman, had also suffered.
This marriage had ruined several lives, so Claire didn't want Matthew to repeat her mistakes and live a life of regret.
Matthew was her only child, her hope for the future.
Matthew knew Claire's life hadn't been easy, so he changed the subject.
However, Claire's curiosity about Elizabeth grew, and she began to ask questions once they were inside the estate.
"What kind of girl is she? I've only heard rumors, which might be biased. I want to hear your description."
Matthew thought for a long time before seriously answering.
"She's wonderful. No words I know can fully describe her."
Claire raised her eyebrows in surprise.
Matthew was usually so proud and indifferent, but his praise for Elizabeth was unusually high.
Claire found herself looking forward to meeting Elizabeth, curious about what kind of person she was.
Matthew seemed to remember something and turned to remind her.
"Mom, don't investigate her privately. She wouldn't like it. When the time is right, I'll bring her to meet you."
Claire gave him a playful look. "Do you think I'm that kind of person?"
But she couldn't help but remind him about Nolan's opinion.
"You know what your father is like. If he doesn't accept Elizabeth, what will you do?"
Matthew was unconcerned. "You said it yourself, marriage is my affair. It's my life with Elizabeth, not his. I don't care about his opinion."
Matthew wouldn't be swayed by Nolan. He was determined to be with Elizabeth.
Once he had made up his mind, he wouldn't let go.
Just then, the sound of a car engine came from outside the estate. The assistant at the door glanced over and quickly ran inside, looking tense.
Claire's expression darkened as she stared in that direction, silent.
"He's here."
Matthew frowned and positioned himself protectively in front of his mother. They watched as the car stopped and Nolan Moore, the head of the Moore family, stepped out.
Seeing Matthew and Claire, Nolan's face twisted with anger, he immediately beganto complain.
"Your attitude has become so defiant. I've urged you countless times to come back, but you didn't. Now that you're finally in Silvermist City, you don't go to The Moore Estate but come straight to your mother's place. What do you think of me as your father?"
The assistant and nearby servants quickly left as Nolan's words grew harsher.
"Have you abandoned the company? Do you even remember your responsibilities?"
Nolan turned to Claire and sneered.
"You two are just alike. I know you're stubborn and rebellious, but you shouldn't have corrupted Matthew."
The tension was palpable.
