Chapter 253: Just Because of Love
Chapter 253: Just Because of Love
Noah gripped Larry's bony hand tightly in return, his Adam's apple bobbing as he finally spoke, "Grandpa, don't worry. The White family won't fall, and I won't let Phoebe down."
Hearing these words, Larry seemed to let out his last breath.
His hand holding Phoebe's suddenly dropped.
The machine beside them let out a piercing, prolonged beep.
"Mr. White!" Tears streamed down Phoebe's face.
Noah clenched his jaw hard, his eyes red-rimmed, just gripping Larry's gradually cooling hand tightly, not letting go for a long time.
Over the next six months, Port Linden's business world went through dramatic changes.
Noah used tough methods to purge all opposition forces within the White Group.
Those suppliers and partners who had once attached themselves to Neil and Vivian were all eliminated.
He worked sixteen hours a day, like a tireless machine, forcibly pulling up the stock price—which had been shaken by scandal and fire—by twenty percent.
And Phoebe wasn't idle either.
With Noah's support, she forcefully entered Foster Enterprises, and using the shares Jade had given her, plus those Ryan had entrusted to her management, she powerfully forced William out of the chairman position.
Those board members who had once looked down on her and humiliated her saw Noah standing behind her and were too scared to say another word.
She had shed the humility of a cleaner and her former naivety.
She wore sharp business suits, sat in the CEO's office, handled documents, held meetings, and negotiated—her methods weren't as ruthless as Noah's, but they still commanded respect.
"Ms. Foster, this quarter's report is out. Profits increased by ten percent."
The assistant respectfully handed the documents to Phoebe.
Phoebe took them, glanced over, and signed her name.
She turned around, looking at the bustling Port Linden scenery through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Once, she had lived cautiously in this city, trampled underfoot. Now, she had finally stood up, standing at the top.
But she knew clearly in her heart that she had all this because someone had always stood behind her, becoming her pillar.
On an early winter afternoon, the sunlight was unusually warm.
Phoebe had just finished a lengthy international conference and walked out of Foster Enterprises, rubbing her sore neck.
As soon as she reached the main entrance, she was stunned by the scene before her.
The usually busy plaza had been cleared of a large area.
The ground was covered with red rose petals, extending all the way to that familiar black Maybach.
A crowd had gathered around, including company employees and passersby, all holding up their phones, taking pictures, and whispering.
"Oh my god, isn't that Mr. White?"
"He's so handsome! Is this a proposal?"
"It must be! Look at those flowers!"
Phoebe's heartbeat suddenly quickened.
The car door opened, and Noah stepped out.
He was wearing a white suit today.
In all the years she'd known him, this was the first time Phoebe had seen him in a white suit.
Today, in the sunlight, he looked much softer.
He held a huge bouquet of pink tulips—Phoebe's favorite flowers.
Noah walked toward her step by step.
Phoebe stood on the steps, not knowing what to do with her hands and feet, her face burning hot.
"What, what are you doing?"
In front of so many people, Phoebe still felt a bit shy.
Noah walked up to her, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
Those usually cold eyes were now full of tenderness.
"Phoebe."
He spoke, his voice deep and magnetic, transmitted through speakers hidden somewhere, spreading throughout the entire plaza.
"Three years ago, I broke your leg and pushed you into hell."
The surrounding crowd let out gasps of surprise.
No one expected that at such a romantic moment, he would bring up such a cruel past.
Phoebe's eyes instantly reddened.
Noah ignored the surrounding voices. He looked at Phoebe, his gaze focused and serious, "That was the stupidest thing I've ever done in my life. I pushed away the person I love with my own hands."
"These past six months, I've thought a lot. I want to make amends, to atone. But I know that some scars can never be erased."
He suddenly dropped to one knee.
This gesture made everyone present gasp.
That was Noah! The king of Port Linden! That untouchable Noah! He was actually kneeling before Phoebe in public!
Phoebe covered her mouth, tears falling in big drops.
Noah took out a velvet box from his pocket and opened it.
Inside was a uniquely designed pink diamond, surrounded by tiny rubies.
"This ring is called Rebirth."
Noah held up the ring, looking up at her, "Phoebe, you crawled out of hell, and I walked back from the edge of death. We've both died once."
"For the rest of our lives, I want to give you my entire life."
"I don't dare ask you to forgive me, but I'm asking you to give me a chance to spend the rest of my life being your crutch, your cleaner, your punching bag."
"Phoebe, will you marry me?"
The plaza fell silent for a few seconds, then erupted in shouts:
"Say yes! Say yes!"
Phoebe cried until her makeup ran.
She looked at Noah kneeling before her.
He had once been her nightmare and disaster.
But now, he was her salvation and support.
She remembered those cold nights in prison, the days of humiliation at Starlight Club, and also that embrace that protected her without hesitation in the fire.
Love or hate, in this lifetime, they were already inseparably entangled.
Phoebe reached out her hand, her voice trembling, "Noah, get up."
Noah froze, not moving, "I won't get up unless you say yes."
"Are you being silly!"
Phoebe laughed through her tears, "I'm telling you to get up so you can put the ring on me! The ground is cold, and you have an old injury on your leg!"
Noah's eyes burst with light as he suddenly stood up, almost losing his balance from moving too quickly.
He fumbled to slip the ring onto Phoebe's ring finger—it fit perfectly.
"Phoebe!"
He picked up Phoebe regardless of everything, spinning around several times.
"Put me down! I'm pregnant!" Phoebe cried out in alarm.
"Right! Right! The baby!"
Noah quickly set her down, carefully touching her slightly rounded belly, grinning like a child.
Thunderous applause erupted around them.
Phoebe leaned against Noah's chest, listening to his strong heartbeat, finally feeling a sense of security she'd never had before.
This time, it had nothing to do with power and revenge—it was only because of love.
