Chapter 163 The Child Turns Out to Be His
Scarlett looked at Daniel in surprise, "What paternity test?"
She took the phone from his hand and stared at the report on the screen in confusion.
This wasn't a paternity test at all, but a kinship test report.
When Scarlett saw the results showing a grandfather-grandson relationship, she was very confused.
"Whose child is this?"
She quickly scrolled up to look, and after seeing the two names listed as the test subjects, she exclaimed in shock.
"The baby in Alice's belly is your godfather's grandson, Tobias's child?"
It was actually Tobias's child!
And Tobias had passed away, so it made perfect sense that Daniel would treat this child like his own nephew.
Tobias had also been busy with White Corporation's overseas business these past two years, and like Alice, had been in Sylvanor for years.
Thinking back to when Alice returned to the country, she came back together with Daniel, Benjamin, and Ella.
People online didn't understand the relationship and mistakenly thought Benjamin and Ella were Alice's parents, saying Daniel had accompanied his future wife's parents on a trip abroad.
Scarlett suddenly understood - no wonder they all came back together.
"Is it because the White family is at a critical moment for going public, and Tobias's death would have too big an impact, that's why you avoided mentioning that Alice's child is Tobias's posthumous baby?"
Scarlett looked at Daniel, and Daniel nodded.
"Tobias and Alice were never together. At a party, Tobias accidentally got drugged by a competitor, and he happened to run into Alice. Alice was forced by Tobias that night, and who knew she'd get pregnant from that one time.
Alice didn't want to keep the child, but the Brown Group ran into problems. I used investing in the Brown Group and giving Alice resources to launch her entertainment career as an exchange for her agreeing to have the baby."
Because of this, Daniel also felt somewhat guilty toward Alice.
After all, for a woman, being forced to give birth to her attacker's child wasn't a pleasant thing.
What's more, the child would be born without a father.
Scarlett was stunned again, not expecting things to have turned out this way.
No wonder Scarlett always felt Alice lacked genuine maternal love for the child in her belly.
If Alice truly loved the baby in her belly, what mother would keep causing trouble while pregnant?
Alice had even pushed Scarlett into the pool before.
"But that day when Grandma made Alice do the paternity test, Mr. Benjamin White and Mrs. Ella White seemed to have no idea this child was Tobias's..."
"Godfather knows. Godmother already has advanced-stage lung cancer. Her health was already poor, and after losing her son, she can't handle any more hope or disappointment.
Alice's pregnancy was unstable before, she almost had a miscarriage. Godfather and I decided to hide it from Godmother for now, worried that if the baby couldn't be saved, giving Godmother hope only to have it crushed might not even let her hold on to what little life she has left..."
Daniel's voice gradually turned worried.
The baby in Alice's belly was connected to Tobias's death, and even more to Benjamin's irregular behavior of hiding Tobias's death to proceed with the normal listing.
Ella couldn't have any more accidents because of this child either.
And Tobias had lived an honorable life - Alice's child came from disgrace.
The dead were gone, and Daniel didn't want Tobias to face any more criticism.
There was too much involved. If Daniel revealed who the child's father was, many things couldn't be hidden anymore.
Scarlett hadn't known that Ella had advanced lung cancer. She had been a bit angry about being pushed into the table corner by Ella before, but now that discomfort in her heart faded away.
"No wonder you went along with Grandma's wishes last time to have Alice do the amniocentesis. It's because you knew Alice was cheating and worried this child might not be Tobias's."
Scarlett understood everything now, but she still felt Daniel was hiding something.
If it was just this, she had pressed Daniel for answers several times, but he refused to say.
And there were those things Alice had said before - Scarlett felt slightly uneasy.
Scarlett was thinking about what else seemed off when Daniel squeezed her hand, interrupting her thoughts.
"I don't care who Alice is with or whether she's dating anyone, but nothing can happen to the child.
Once Alice safely gives birth to the baby, it will be taken directly to The White Mansion to be raised.
No one will know that Alice gave birth to this child. We'll just announce publicly that the child was left by Tobias's girlfriend abroad.
So you don't need to worry that this child will have too much connection with Alice in the future.
After she gives birth, she'll get the benefits she wanted from the exchange, and she'll have her normal married life. She'll have nothing to do with this child anymore."
Daniel reached up to pat Scarlett's head, "I promised Godfather to keep the child's situation completely hidden from the public, so I couldn't talk about it. Now you know everything."
"I'm your wife - I'm not going to go around telling everyone. You could have told me secretly."
Scarlett's nose felt a bit sour. He had no idea how many times she'd been jealous over the baby in Alice's belly, how upset she'd been.
But Daniel narrowed his eyes at Scarlett, "I told you early on the child wasn't mine. And who was it that said she didn't care anymore? Now you're playing the victim?"
Scarlett felt a bit embarrassed and quickly changed the subject, "By the way, how did Tobias pass away?"
Daniel's body stiffened slightly. His handsome face seemed to be covered with a layer of dark pain for a moment, as if even sunlight was retreating from his eyes.
Daniel's Adam's apple bobbed slightly before he hoarsely uttered a brief sentence, "Car accident."
What Daniel didn't say was that Tobias had the car accident on his way to see Daniel.
If not for Daniel's phone call, Tobias wouldn't have driven through the night while exhausted, wouldn't have had his car flip over, wouldn't have died in the accident at such a young age.
It was Daniel's phone call that cost Tobias his life.
What's more, the child in Alice's belly was connected to her.
So no matter what, he couldn't let anything happen to the child in Alice's belly.
That was Tobias's only bloodline, and possibly the White family's only remaining bloodline.
Daniel's emotions were suppressed to the extreme. His fists clenched tight, his whole being seemed to sink into an abyss of cold, desolate depression.
Scarlett felt something was wrong with Daniel's mood. She thought Daniel must be sad about Tobias's death.
She reached up to touch Daniel's handsome face, then smoothed his tightly furrowed brow, calling to him with worry and helplessness.
"Daniel, I'm sorry, I won't ask anymore. Please don't be sad."
Daniel's lashes moved slightly. He held Scarlett's hand and kissed her knuckles twice.
His expression had calmed considerably. Holding Scarlett's waist, his thin lips parted slightly.
"Are you still jealous now? Still unwilling to accept Bunny calling that child brother?"
Scarlett's face turned bright red. Somewhat annoyed, she straightened up and wrapped her arms around Daniel's neck.
"I had no idea it would be like this! If you'd explained it to me earlier, how could I possibly not accept this child?
Daniel, don't worry. You treat that child like your own nephew, and I'm your wife - of course I'll care for him too."
Daniel's expression was serious and solemn. Tobias had been a good person.
Scarlett still remembered when she was little and got into a fight with William once. Tobias happened to pass by and stood up for her, even scolding William and giving her an orange candy, her favorite.
If Alice wouldn't raise this child properly, Scarlett was willing to be understanding.
Daniel looked at her and smiled.
"Mrs. Wilson is so reasonable and considerate?"
Scarlett lifted her little chin, "Of course, I've always been a beautiful girl with a kind heart."
Scarlett's eyes were bright and charming, her watery eyes slightly curved, lively and lovely.
Daniel felt he hadn't seen her show him such a relaxed and happy expression in a long time.
His heart stirred slightly, his eyes darkened, his thin lips curved up.
"You're already helping me raise a child together - Mrs. Wilson isn't talking about divorce anymore, right?"
He circled her waist, "Tomorrow let's go to court and withdraw the divorce application."
