Chapter 162 They Are Mutual Secret Admirers
Scarlett's mind went completely blank as she frantically searched for tissues.
Daniel's face darkened. He grabbed the water glass from the table and hurled it toward the door.
"Get out!"
At the hospital room door, William barely had time to react before the glass hit him hard on the forehead.
"Sorry for interrupting!"
William clutched his forehead and immediately shut the door.
He touched the small bump forming at his temple, cold sweat running down his back.
He'd only caught a glimpse of Scarlett's exposed waist.
She'd shown more than that on stage—it wasn't like he hadn't seen it before.
Daniel was way too aggressive!
Inside the room, Scarlett frantically helped Daniel stop his nosebleed, saying in embarrassed frustration.
"I told you not to mess around! This hospital room isn't the right place for us!"
Daniel nodded in complete agreement. "It's not convenient. Let's check out tomorrow then."
Scarlett frowned. "That won't work. You need to be mostly healed first. Once you're okay, I'll go check on William. Daniel, why did you throw that at him?"
Scarlett had just turned around when Daniel grabbed her wrist. He used so much force that it startled her.
She turned to look at him. "What's wrong?"
Daniel realized he'd lost control and loosened his grip slightly, frowning. "My wound might have torn open again. It hurts a bit."
Scarlett's attention was immediately drawn entirely to him.
She helped Daniel lie down properly, then wrung out a towel to wipe the fine sweat from his forehead, completely forgetting about William outside the door.
Daniel's thin lips curved slightly as he said weakly, "I don't have the energy to see him. Tell William to go back."
Scarlett didn't doubt him at all and nodded.
"William talks way too much! We can't let him disturb your rest. I'll go tell him to leave."
As she turned to go, Daniel pulled her back again. "Stay with me. I'll call him."
Scarlett couldn't understand why Daniel would go through the trouble of calling when William was right outside the door and they could just talk to him directly.
William was also confused when he got the call.
"Daniel? I'm right outside. Should I come in? I..."
"You don't need to come in. Scarlett and I need to rest. Go back."
William fell silent.
Then he thought about what he'd seen when he pushed the door open earlier, and it all made sense.
William's expression became incredibly complex in that instant.
Who would've thought Daniel was such a lustful guy.
They were having sex in a hospital room!
And after he, William, had walked in on them, they still wanted to continue!
How thrilling did they need things to be!
William clicked his tongue internally, about to make a teasing remark when Daniel's cool voice came through again.
"I asked you to scout locations for the country's largest racing facility. You go out for a trip and you're already done?"
About a month ago, William had gotten beaten up by Daniel for hiding what happened with Jake.
But the next day, Daniel called William to the Star Group. Daniel was actually willing to invest three billion dollars under his personal name to help William build a racing facility.
This had always been William's dream. William felt incredibly lucky.
William had agreed immediately, of course, and left that same day to scout locations across the country.
"I haven't finalized it yet..." William thought Daniel was concerned about the racing project and quickly replied.
Daniel cut him off. "If you haven't finished, then get back to it. If you can't do it, don't bother coming back to Shadow City. I'm only giving you two weeks. If you can't pick a final location and come up with a feasible plan, I won't invest in this project."
William panicked. "Come on, Daniel, I still have a few places I haven't inspected in person. I'll book a flight right away and leave today."
Daniel didn't even let people rest—truly Shadow City's most successful capitalist!
Daniel hung up as soon as he heard what he wanted to hear.
Scarlett took the phone and put it away, saying casually.
"No wonder William disappeared after coming back to the country. Daniel's actually building the country's largest racing facility for William. William must be thrilled."
Daniel's eyes fixed on her. Scarlett's face was lit up with a bright smile.
That smile somehow felt glaring to him.
Daniel's eyes darkened. "You're happy for him?"
"Of course. That's William's only real ambition."
Scarlett laughed softly, her eyes full of joy.
She was genuinely happy for William, not just because they got along well, but also because Scarlett and William both had hearts that chased dreams.
Seeing her good friend William achieve his dream was something to be happy about.
Scarlett picked up the basin and unconsciously hummed a tune as she headed to the bathroom.
She didn't notice at all that Daniel's face on the hospital bed had become quite dark.
Daniel pulled his gaze away from Scarlett's happy figure and closed his eyes.
However, memories from the past floated before his eyes.
Ever since Scarlett arrived at The Wilson Mansion, she'd been well-behaved and followed the rules, but she was different with William.
From childhood, she'd refused to acknowledge William as her brother.
When she was little, she'd even secretly fought with William. They constantly bickered, but seemed to get along well.
In front of William, she was completely lively like a girl her age should be, while in front of Daniel she was far too obedient and well-behaved.
The first time Scarlett got drunk was with William, and after coming home, she'd called out William's name in her sleep.
The first time Scarlett stayed out all night, William had taken her to the beach to watch the stars.
At Scarlett's college graduation ceremony, Daniel had been seriously injured abroad but still rushed back.
On campus, William had lifted Scarlett in her graduation gown and sat her on his shoulder, refusing to let her down.
She'd clutched at William's hair in alarm, saying in embarrassed frustration.
"Like, like, I like you, okay! William, you're so annoying!"
But William had held onto her legs and spun around in circles.
Under the camphor trees in the sunlight, there was William's hearty laughter and her laughing shrieks.
And also...
That diary in Daniel's office drawer, filled with a young girl's thoughts.
The ridiculous thing was, he wasn't her main character.
But he'd masochistically memorized every page.
Daniel unconsciously clenched his fists. If it weren't for that chaotic night between them four years ago.
Maybe she and William would have gotten together long ago.
"Daniel, are you asleep?"
Scarlett's voice suddenly rang out. Daniel's eyes flew open.
For a moment, Scarlett thought Daniel's eyes were tinged with red, as if suppressing surging emotions.
But in the blink of an eye, his expression was back to normal.
"What is it?"
Scarlett had just been thinking about William's racing facility in the bathroom, which naturally reminded her of her own study abroad plans.
Realizing she hadn't discussed this with Daniel yet, she felt somewhat impatient.
"It's about my studying abroad. I don't want to give it up. Vivienne happens to be busy with her global tour this year and can't teach at school. After Bunny is born, I'll be free to attend classes, so I want to go abroad next year."
But Daniel frowned slightly. "Bunny will be too young and will need your care even more. We'll talk about your studying abroad in a few years."
If she went abroad to study, they would inevitably spend less time together.
Last time they were apart, he'd missed the most important time of her youth when she first fell in love, which let William into her heart.
This time, their marriage had finally started to change for the better, and they had a baby. Daniel didn't want any more complications.
He knew she loved dancing. There were opportunities to develop in the country too—any major dance company, as long as she wanted to go, he could help her.
In three or four years, when their relationship was stable and the child was older, if she still wanted to study abroad, that wouldn't be impossible.
She was only twenty-two. Her dance career still had a long way to go. Daniel felt there was no need to rush.
She'd just had a baby, and her body needed rest and recovery too.
But Scarlett was stunned. How could she possibly wait a few years?
A few years—and then how many more years after that?
Daniel could fully support Alice, support William, but when it came to her, Scarlett, he always dismissed her with a single word.
Did Daniel think she was only worthy of depending on him?
Or was the child ultimately what mattered most?
Did Scarlett's career, her dreams, her happiness—did none of it matter?
But she didn't want to be an accessory anymore. She didn't want to be the pitiful little thing from the Wilson family in everyone's eyes in Shadow City.
She had to have her own stage, her own life.
"Daniel."
Scarlett wanted to argue and discuss it with him further, but Daniel on the hospital bed didn't want to continue this topic.
Daniel picked up his phone from the table, opened a report, and handed it to Scarlett.
"You've been asking about who the father of Alice's child is. The paternity test—see for yourself."
