Chapter 90 Ecstasy! He and Gloria Have a Child
Although James was unhappy about Gloria and Caspian being alone together, when he saw the surgical gown Gloria was wearing, he couldn't care about that anymore and quickly walked toward her.
"Gloria, what happened to you?"
Gloria didn't want to explain. She hurried over, her voice hoarse: "How's Grandma?"
James repeated what the doctor had said. When Gloria heard the words "prepare for the funeral," her legs went weak and she almost collapsed.
"Careful."
James and Caspian both reached out to steady her at the same time.
The atmosphere instantly became tense. James's gaze coldly swept toward Caspian's hand, his eyes carrying a warning.
Not wanting Gloria to bear any nasty rumors, Caspian let go with his slender fingers and even stepped back to create distance.
That embrace in the car just now was enough for him to savor for a long time.
Right now, he didn't have the right to openly possess her.
Gloria clutched James's collar tightly, asking anxiously: "What did you choose?"
"A brain hemorrhage is no small matter. Even if it doesn't cause immediate death, there's a high chance of becoming a vegetable. Grandma is quite old, so that would mean death isn't far off. Although the surgery is risky, at least there's a small chance."
When Gloria heard the word "death," her face turned deathly pale.
She had originally wanted to have an abortion, but then Vivienne had her accident, and her child survived.
Last time she was frozen all night, and the child was still fine.
It was as if some force was preventing her from going through with it, as if she was meant to keep this child.
If something happened to Vivienne, these two children would be her only blood relatives left in the world.
Seeing her distracted, James didn't know what she was thinking. He opened his coat and pulled her into his embrace, shielding her from the cold in the hallway.
He patiently comforted her: "Don't be afraid, Grandma will be fine."
Caspian watched the two of them embracing and calmly looked away, his gaze falling on the hazy horizon.
Dawn was breaking.
Only then did Gloria snap back to reality. She pushed James away and sat down in a chair to wait.
James didn't say much either. He leaned against the wall, his expression indifferent, though a hint of complexity flashed through his deep eyes.
His sharp gaze swept over Gloria. Apart from her reddened eyes and her face looking somewhat haggard and pale, she showed no signs of illness.
But she was wearing a hospital gown with the Pinnacle Health Institute logo clearly printed on it.
The nursing home had excellent medical resources, yet she had avoided him and gone to Caspian's private hospital. What was Gloria trying to do?
He thought back to how Gloria had said in his arms that she wanted to give him a surprise.
These past few days, Gloria's appetite had decreased, and images of her vomiting in the bathroom flashed through his mind.
An idea formed in James's mind.
At the thought of this possibility, he became so excited that his blood boiled.
Gloria was pregnant, wasn't she?
Although he felt this possibility was slim, he couldn't think of any other reason.
So what she was going to do was have an abortion.
James's heart tightened, but he quickly came to his senses. When Gloria had run over just now, she seemed fine.
Gloria hadn't succeeded.
The child was still there!
James was overjoyed. He and Gloria had a child!
They would never be separated again.
Caspian quietly took in the changes on his face.
With Vivienne's accident happening so suddenly, Gloria wouldn't have had time to change clothes. James wasn't a fool—this matter probably couldn't be hidden anymore.
James must have guessed.
But Gloria was absorbed in praying for Vivienne, completely unaware of the undercurrents around her.
Time passed minute by minute, until the operating room doors opened. At that moment, she realized she didn't have the courage to ask about the results.
The surgery only had a thirty percent success rate, and Vivienne was so old.
She was afraid the news would be that Vivienne had become a vegetable, or the worst outcome—that the surgery had failed and the family should accept their grief.
Gloria's body trembled uncontrollably. She gripped the armrest tightly, her legs so weak she couldn't even stand up.
James walked up to the doctor. "Doctor, how is my grandmother?"
Hearing the words "surgery successful," Gloria's anxious heart finally settled.
She held onto the chair to stand up, her voice trembling as she asked: "How is she doing now?"
"Still not very stable. We'll have to see if she can get through the critical period. Alright, family members should go handle the paperwork."
Vivienne hadn't woken up yet and was wheeled out.
Gloria followed. After two consecutive blows, her emotions were like a roller coaster, going up and down.
Like last time, she was stopped outside the ICU.
But could Vivienne hold on this time?
Gloria pressed against the glass, tears streaming down her face, her heart aching with guilt.
She felt that if she hadn't had the surgery last night, Vivienne wouldn't have had this accident.
It was her fault.
Everything was her fault.
John finished the paperwork and reminded Gloria and James, who were both wearing hospital gowns.
"Mr. Williams, Mrs. Williams, there are people monitoring here 24/7, and you can't go in anyway. Would you like to go back and rest first?"
Caspian spoke up: "It's almost dawn. Get some breakfast and rest. Vivienne cares about you—she'll definitely pull through."
"Okay."
Gloria wiped the tears from her eyes with her sleeve, ignored James, and left with Caspian.
James clenched his fists, forcibly suppressing the rage churning in his chest.
Only after Gloria left did John carefully speak up: "Mr. Williams, you should also—"
James coldly cut him off. "Go investigate something. Pull all of Gloria's diagnostic records from Sacred Heart Medical Institute. Oh, and prepare some gifts for Laura."
James stood with his hands behind his back, his eyes dark and sharp. "I need to confirm something."
"What?" John was confused.
James's thin lips formed each word: "Gloria—she should be pregnant."
Hearing this, John was stunned too. "That's not very likely. Mrs. Williams's condition..."
"Whether she is or not, we'll know once we ask her attending physician."
James couldn't be bothered with treatment. He went back to his room, changed clothes, cleaned himself up, took some fever medicine, and hurried down the mountain.
At this hour, the hospital wasn't open yet.
Just as Laura was about to drive away, someone got out of a Cullinan.
"Laura, wait a moment."
Laura looked up and saw James in a suit standing in front of the Cullinan, his presence so powerful it was intimidating. When those eyes looked at her, Laura felt nervous.
She had been treating Gloria for several years but didn't know who Gloria's husband was.
But she had seen this face in financial magazines.
"Mr. Williams, can I help you?" she asked politely and courteously.
James's expression was calm, but his voice carried an undeniable authority: "Laura, let's talk for a moment."
