Chapter 543 You Are Almost Thirty Years Old
Sophia looked at Lowell in surprise and asked, "Where did you get all this stuff?"
For him to have such complete information, it definitely couldn't be just a coincidence.
Lowell's eyes darted away, not daring to meet Sophia's gaze. He said vaguely, "Don't worry about it. You just need to know this is very valuable, one of a kind. If you don't want it, just destroy it."
Sophia turned to look at Benjamin and found his expression equally serious.
Benjamin's eyes narrowed slightly, his cold, sharp gaze fixed directly on Lowell, as if trying to see right through him.
"Do you know Elijah?"
He suddenly spoke, and his words startled both Lowell and Sophia.
Lowell stumbled back a step in panic, his eyes wide with disbelief.
Does he... does he know something?
Benjamin had only been guessing, but seeing Lowell's reaction now finally confirmed his suspicion.
He stopped there, not pressing further. Instead, he folded the paper in Sophia's hand and put it away.
"Don't worry, we'll keep this formula. You take care of yourself."
Although the GeneCipher Society had been destroyed, there was still a group of people frantically searching for the formula.
If those people found out Lowell had the formula, they definitely wouldn't let him go.
Lowell nodded with a complicated expression. He used to be jealous of Benjamin, thinking fate was so unfair—why were some people born into love and privilege while ordinary people like them lived hard lives?
He had even resented Benjamin because of Sophia.
But at this moment, he finally understood why Sophia had chosen Benjamin instead of him.
He said goodbye to Sophia and Benjamin and headed straight back to the hospital without looking back.
Watching him leave, Sophia frowned. She felt Lowell's last words had some hidden meaning.
Benjamin lowered his eyes and saw her worried expression. He chuckled helplessly.
He put his arm around Sophia's shoulder and gently rubbed her furrowed brow with his fingertip. "Stop frowning, or you'll get wrinkles."
Sophia's attention was diverted. She glared at him. "You're the one who'll get wrinkles! I'm only in my twenties, but you—you're almost thirty."
Sophia's words felt like a knife stabbing into Benjamin's heart. Age had always been his biggest insecurity.
He was several years older than Sophia.
There was no denying that an outstanding woman like Sophia would have countless admirers.
Men younger than him, men better at taking care of people—they were everywhere.
His advantage was probably just his love for Sophia and his sincere heart.
Noticing Benjamin's mood drop, Sophia suddenly stood on her tiptoes and ruffled his hair. "I like older men."
With one sentence, she pulled Benjamin back from the edge.
Benjamin felt his cold heart warm up instantly. His eyes brightened. "Really?"
"Really!" Sophia nodded seriously and pulled him into the car.
Meanwhile, Lowell returned to the hospital. He felt the heavy burden suddenly lift from his shoulders, leaving him feeling light and relieved.
He had actually seen the news—Elijah had been taken away by the police.
Although Elijah was his father, Elijah had done too many bad things, and over the years, Elijah had never taken care of him.
So his feelings toward Elijah were complicated.
Taking Elijah in had already been more than enough. As for anything else... There was nothing more he could do.
After work that evening, Lowell returned to his home. Just as he opened the door, something suddenly pressed against his lower back.
Lowell instinctively looked down and saw it was a gun.
The person behind him applied slight pressure and threatened coldly, "Walk inside."
Lowell raised his hands and slowly walked forward, saying to the person behind him as he went, "Who are you? Why are you looking for me? The soundproofing here is terrible. If you fire that gun, the neighbors and people upstairs and downstairs will all hear it."
"Shut up, or I won't be nice to you!"
It was a woman's voice. Her tone sounded somewhat familiar to Lowell, but he didn't dare look back and couldn't place who it was.
He followed her instructions and walked inside. He heard the woman close the door behind them, and his heart sank.
Lowell didn't dare move; he could only let himself be at her mercy.
Behind him, Sabrina pulled rope from her bag, tied him up, and shoved him hard onto the sofa.
Lowell fell heavily, his body stumbling.
He instinctively looked up, and when he saw her face clearly, his pupils contracted sharply. "Dr. Chambers? How can it be you?"
"Why can't it be me? Tell me honestly, where's the stuff Elijah left you?"
Lowell looked confused. "Stuff? What stuff?"
Sabrina sneered and slapped Lowell across the face. The sharp sound of the slap echoed in the quiet apartment.
"Don't play dumb with me. Where's the formula? I'm warning you, don't try anything with me!"
