Chapter 483 Emilio Blair
Emilio didn't answer Sophia's question. Instead, he hurried over to check on Alton's injuries in her arms.
Sophia knew he hadn't let his guard down yet, so she didn't press further.
After thinking for a moment, she said to Emilio, "I want to treat all the children here. Will you help me?"
Sophia didn't really expect him to agree. After all, Emilio had been hurt too much.
The world had been so cruel to him, leaving him covered in scars. It was normal for him not to trust people easily.
But surprisingly, Emilio slowly nodded.
He turned and walked toward the corner, saying to the group of children, "Don't be afraid. She's here to save us."
The children didn't seem to understand. They looked at Sophia instinctively, their eyes filled with confusion.
Sophia's heart softened again.
She reached for her bag without thinking, wanting to take out some candy to comfort them.
But when she felt around, she remembered her bag had been taken away.
Sophia glared coldly at Ivan. "These children are so thin and weak. Haven't you been feeding them?"
Ivan and the others felt guilty again.
They were so busy with experiments every day, completely overwhelmed, that they never thought about meals.
Sometimes they'd work all day without eating. How could they think about food?
When they didn't eat, the guards outside didn't care about them either.
So it was normal for these children not to get fed.
"How long have you starved them?" Sophia couldn't believe it. She was both angry and heartbroken.
These people were absolutely heartless!
They didn't even feed them!
These children not only had to suffer emotional trauma but were also being starved.
Ivan: "...They ate last night, I think?"
Just?
Sophia was furious. What did he mean by "just last night"?
It was already evening now. They'd been hungry for almost a whole day!
"Ms. Brown, they're all going to die anyway..."
"Shut up!" Sophia was usually very even-tempered, but now she couldn't hold back anymore.
She couldn't imagine how anyone could treat human lives as casually as eating and drinking.
"It's nothing for you to go hungry for a day, but they're children! The youngest is only one or two years old!"
The person who spoke felt wronged after being scolded by Sophia. He thought it was humiliating to be yelled at by a woman.
He wanted to talk back, but Ivan stopped him.
Ivan said, "Go find some food for these children."
Ivan had the most seniority among them, and everyone listened to him. Even though they were angry, they forced themselves to swallow it.
They glared at Sophia and turned to look for food.
"Wait—"
Sophia called them back.
They turned around impatiently. "What now? This isn't your house. Nobody's going to spoil you here!"
But Sophia wasn't scared. She lifted her chin, her eyes full of cold pride. "What? Should I call Lachlan over?"
At the mention of Lachlan's name, their arrogance instantly disappeared.
They ground their back teeth and pushed down their anger again. "Speak. What else do you want?"
They didn't dare mess with that lunatic Lachlan!
Because they'd seen with their own eyes a professor who didn't follow orders die under Lachlan's gun.
One shot, dead. The professor didn't even get a chance to say his last words.
They were terrified and had nightmares for days.
Since then, they'd developed an instinctive fear of Lachlan.
Now, hearing Sophia threaten them with Lachlan's name, even though they were upset, they held back.
Sophia ordered in a serious tone, "Go buy some baby formula and some nutritional supplements. They need nutrition."
"A bunch of kids who are about to die anyway... Fine, I'll have someone buy it!"
Jake Sherman thought these children were already dying. How could they possibly be saved?
But Sophia's eyes were so cold that he couldn't help but shiver and swallowed back what he was going to say.
He turned and left to find the guards.
These professors weren't allowed to leave the base unless Lachlan gave special permission.
In all these years, not a single professor had walked out of here in one piece.
They'd tried to resist before, but in the end could only submit to reality.
Sophia ignored them and continued treating the next child.
It was a little girl named Cordelia. She was tiny and thin, with pale lips—clearly malnourished.
Combined with the poison in her body, she was barely hanging on.
Cordelia felt a pair of gentle hands pick her up. She slowly opened her eyes and saw a beautiful woman.
She spoke weakly, "Am I in heaven?"
Sophia's nose stung again. She gently stroked her dry, yellow hair. "No, I'm going to make you better. Then you can go out and see your mom and dad."
"I don't have a mom and dad. They... abandoned me."
Sophia pressed her lips together sadly and coaxed her, "It's okay. When you get better, I'll help you find them."
"Okay." Cordelia weakly closed her eyes, her breathing getting weaker and weaker.
Sophia held her in one arm and injected the poison-suppressing medicine with the other hand.
Emilio kept watching her movements without blinking. He was both guarded and curious.
After what felt like forever, Sophia finally finished injecting all the children with the poison-suppressing medicine. She was exhausted.
She stood up, her vision going black, and almost fainted.
Emilio quickly caught her. "Are you okay?"
Sophia looked down and met a pair of eyes full of concern.
She smiled and shook her head. "I'm fine."
Probably because she'd used up too much energy, standing up suddenly made her dizzy.
Emilio pressed his lips together and sat back down. "Emilio Blair."
"What?" Sophia looked at him, confused.
Emilio repeated, "My name. Emilio."
Emilio...
Sophia's lips curved slightly, her eyes full of warmth. "That's a beautiful name."
Emilio was dazzled by the smile on her face. His face couldn't help but turn red.
"How long have you been here?" Sophia didn't notice his emotions and continued asking.
He was the most severely injured here, but also the strongest.
Even when the poison flared up, Emilio gritted his teeth and endured it without making a sound.
This reminded Sophia of Benjamin when he was young.
Back then, he was like Emilio—no matter how much pain he suffered, he'd silently bear it without a word.
Emilio: "Two years."
Of the children brought here, few could last three months. He'd been here the longest.
Those people praised him for having a good constitution, but he didn't want their praise at all.
After all, watching the people around him gradually lose their lives, one after another, leaving him, wasn't a good thing.
Whenever Emilio closed his eyes, he could see the desperate eyes of those dead children.
He didn't know when it would be his turn to face death.
Or whether he'd ever see hope of leaving this place.
His life... was completely dark, with no light to be seen.
