Chapter 482 On the Verge of Death
Before Lachlan left, he didn't say anything about restricting Sophia's freedom.
So as long as Sophia didn't try to escape, she should be able to move around freely here.
Ivan hurriedly pulled her back.
"Wait! I'll tell you."
Why was Sophia so stubborn at such a young age?
Who did she learn that from?
"Those children are locked in that room. They were injected with failed experimental drugs."
In other words, those children probably didn't have much time left.
Sophia's pupils contracted as she quickly walked in the direction Ivan pointed.
It was a tightly closed door.
Sophia put her hand on the doorknob and turned it, but it wouldn't budge.
She looked back, her eyes cold and sharp. "Where's the key?"
"Lachlan ordered that unauthorized people can't enter..."
Sophia's eyes narrowed slightly, filled with a bloodthirsty coldness.
"Then I'll call him back and ask if I'm qualified to go in or not?"
Ivan and the others were startled by the powerful presence radiating from her.
They hadn't expected to feel such a strong aura from a twenty-year-old Sophia.
For some reason, they inexplicably felt guilty.
Ivan tremblingly took out a set of keys from his pocket and handed them to Sophia.
"The biggest key opens this door."
Sophia gave him an icy look, took the keys, and quickly opened the door.
Even though she had mentally prepared herself, she was still shocked by the scene inside.
In the huge room, there were two iron cages used for holding wild animals, with nearly a dozen children huddled inside.
They were all small children. The oldest looked to be only about five or six years old.
The youngest was only one or two years old.
There was no light in their eyes. Their once beautiful and clear eyes were now filled with fear.
Several children were even lying motionless in the cages.
Sophia reached out to check their breathing and found they were barely hanging on to life.
A tremendous anger surged straight to her brain. Sophia immediately went in, wanting to treat them one by one.
Ivan tried to stop her. "These children can't be saved. I'll just record the data."
His tone was very flat, as if he had long become accustomed to this.
At first, they also thought it was cruel, but over time, as one living life after another gradually lost vitality before their eyes...
They became numb.
Since they already knew this would be the outcome, they might as well finish the experiment sooner.
That way, perhaps fewer people would die.
This was what each of them thought.
Sophia laughed bitterly and demanded coldly, "Don't you have children? Don't you have families? If one of them was your relative, would you still be this indifferent?"
Ivan and the others were stunned by the question, then lowered their heads in shame.
Sophia paid them no more attention and carefully approached.
When the children saw her open the cage door, they all fearfully hid in the corner.
Even Alton, who was lying on the ground barely alive, instinctively used all his strength to crawl toward the corner.
Even using all his strength, he only moved a little bit.
Sophia's heart ached watching this. She picked Alton up from the ground and gently stroked him. "Don't be afraid..."
She was pregnant now, too, so when she saw the terrible state of these children, her heart throbbed with pain.
She couldn't imagine how devastated she would be if her own child suffered like this.
It was easy to imagine that these children's parents must be going crazy with worry.
Perhaps because Sophia's voice was too gentle, Alton, who had been trembling all over, slowly opened his eyes.
He met a pair of very beautiful eyes and a face as angelic as heaven.
He was too young now to really understand what beautiful meant.
But the light in Sophia's eyes—he remembered it for his entire life.
Many years later, he still remembered this moment, when he was in complete despair, being gently picked up by a pair of hands.
That was the long-lost warmth he felt when he was close to death.
Seeing his emotions stabilize, Sophia finally breathed a sigh of relief and said to the children in the corner, "Don't be afraid, I won't hurt you."
The children's numb eyes moved slightly, but they still maintained a defensive posture.
Sophia sighed silently to herself and first examined the child in her arms.
As Ivan had said, he had been injected with a failed experimental product and didn't have much time left.
Sophia looked at the professors standing outside the cage. "Do you have medical equipment?"
When she was brought here, everything on her had been taken away.
Including her phone and portable medical supplies.
She really needed medical supplies now to temporarily suppress the toxins in their bodies.
Ivan was stunned. "Yes, wait, I'll get them."
Soon, Ivan brought the medical supplies and handed them to Sophia.
Before leaving, he asked hesitantly, "These children... can they be saved?"
"How will we know if we don't try? It's better than doing nothing and watching them die."
Ivan's expression gradually became complicated. As doctors, they had long been accustomed to life and death.
Under Lachlan's ideological control, they had made research the most important thing in their lives.
Gradually, they had lost their reverence for life.
Sophia's words shocked each of them, followed by a sense of shame.
Sophia didn't care what they were thinking. While comforting the child's emotions, she treated him.
Just as she was about to inject Alton with the toxin-suppressing drug, Emilio, the oldest child in the corner, suddenly rushed over.
He bared his teeth at Sophia fiercely, his eyes full of coldness.
Sophia was startled by the child.
"Don't be nervous, I'm saving him. I mean no harm," Sophia said in a low, gentle voice.
Emilio was still very guarded. Probably because he had experienced too much cruel harm, he didn't trust her at all.
Sophia had to reason with him. "If we wait any longer, he might die. You don't want to see him die, do you?"
She believed Emilio could understand what she was saying.
Sure enough, Emilio hesitated for a moment and reluctantly stepped back, but his eyes stared straight at her.
Emilio was afraid she would do something harmful to his companion.
Sophia breathed a sigh of relief and began the treatment.
About half an hour later, Sophia finally relaxed.
The poison in Alton's body had been temporarily suppressed, and his face visibly regained some color.
But it was only temporary.
Sophia cleaned the medical supplies with cleaning tools and then moved closer to the corner.
She looked at Emilio, who was as fierce as a little wolf, and asked, "What's your name?"
