Chapter 464 Great-Grandson
"Contradiction? Lachlan's biological mother died over twenty years ago. There shouldn't be any." Preston spoke uncertainly.
Too much time had passed, and he couldn't remember some things clearly anymore.
He only knew that he had a clear conscience from beginning to end.
He had repaid enough of what he owed Everett.
Benjamin leaned against the sofa back, his fingers lightly tapping his knee, deep in thought.
"Then why would he harm us, the White family? There must be some overlooked details."
Preston's expression changed: "What are you saying? Lachlan harmed us, the White family?"
Preston's own speculation was one thing, but actually hearing it from Benjamin's mouth was another matter entirely.
After all, Lachlan was a child he had raised himself. He treated Lachlan like his own son, so naturally, he didn't want Lachlan to be the one behind all this.
"Grandpa, you need to prepare yourself mentally," Benjamin warned in a low voice.
He was worried Preston wouldn't be able to handle it and would be too shocked.
Meeting Benjamin's eyes full of concern, Preston's heart sank again.
He murmured, "No wonder you specifically brought me here for dinner. Go ahead and tell me, I can handle it."
This year, he had experienced too many storms—what hadn't he seen?
Preston just couldn't figure out why Lachlan would do this.
Benjamin cleared his throat and revealed the relationship between GeneCipher Society and Lachlan.
GeneCipher Society was founded by Lachlan himself.
Lachlan was Valentin.
Dashiell had been hypnotizing Amelia since she was pregnant with Benjamin, which caused her emotions to become increasingly out of control.
In other words, the breakdown of Amelia and Magnus's relationship was directly related to Lachlan.
As for Amelia being poisoned during pregnancy, that was naturally Lachlan's doing too.
And the kidnapping case when Benjamin was seven years old was also planned by Lachlan.
...
Everything Lachlan did was targeting the White family.
More precisely, it seemed to be targeting Magnus.
But Benjamin couldn't understand—Magnus clearly had three sons, so why him specifically?
Why was he the victim from beginning to end?
Back then, he was just in Amelia's belly, just an unborn child.
The latter kidnapping also targeted him.
After hearing everything, Preston's face was extremely grim.
He asked in a heavy voice: "Have you verified all these things? Do you have evidence?"
Benjamin looked at him: "We don't have much evidence, but I'm certain every word I've said is true."
Preston nodded with a dark expression, a flash of hatred passing through his eyes.
"Why? Why would he do this? All these years I thought I'd been dedicated enough to him..."
What had he done wrong that Lachlan would go to such lengths to harm them, the White family?
Benjamin consoled him softly: "Grandpa, it's not your fault. There must be details we've overlooked. I just haven't figured it out yet."
This was also why he had brought Preston here.
He just hadn't expected to get any useful information.
Suddenly, inspiration struck: "Grandpa, you just said Lachlan's biological mother died over twenty years ago?"
Preston: "Yes, shortly after she came to see me."
Benjamin fell into thought: "Is it possible... that Lachlan blamed us, the White family, for that woman's death?"
"How could that be? Madeline accidentally fell down the stairs while running from debt collectors." Preston frowned, his eyes full of disgust at the mention of that woman.
Madeline had originally come to ask him for money, but he refused.
He had already given enough money. He only owed Everett, and he had repaid what needed to be repaid.
Besides, when he decided to raise Lachlan, he had already given Madeline a large sum of money according to her request, essentially buying out the family ties.
If Lachlan was plotting against the White family for this reason, then the White family was truly wronged.
He slammed the table in anger, gritting his teeth: "I raised Lachlan only because Everett asked me to on his deathbed. I never thought he would be so ungrateful!"
"Grandpa, don't get upset, be careful not to harm your health!" Alaric consoled him softly from the side.
Preston took a deep breath, trying to calm his emotions.
He suddenly thought of something and spoke excitedly: "Maybe... you could go ask your father."
At these words, both Benjamin and Alaric froze.
One's eyes flashed with disgust, the other's expression became unnatural.
"Grandpa, what does this have to do with him?" Alaric hid the bitterness in his heart and asked coldly.
Preston explained in a low voice: "Back then, not long after Lachlan's mother had her accident, Lachlan went to see your dad, and they seemed to have gotten into a fight."
He just didn't know if it was related to this matter.
If it really was related... then they definitely needed to ask Magnus about it.
"Although I don't like him either, I don't think he's that kind of person." Alaric cleared his throat, instinctively wanting to speak up for Magnus.
Actually, it wasn't really speaking up for Magnus, because that's what he truly thought.
Magnus... although he hadn't given him enough fatherly love, would definitely not go around harming people.
Actually, after leaving the hotel last night, Alaric had spent the whole night reflecting.
Magnus was indeed at fault and had indeed missed more than ten years of his life.
But the fact that he now appeared by Benjamin's side as M showed that Magnus cared about Benjamin.
And according to Benjamin, M had stayed in GeneCipher Society for many years, trying to find evidence.
Everything made sense.
Magnus's departure back then was just a cover.
He deliberately made a big scene and then left the White family, so he could naturally join the GeneCipher Society.
Also, Magnus had paid a heavy price. Although he hadn't seen Magnus's face with his own eyes, it was said to be badly injured.
For a moment, he couldn't tell whether he should still hate Magnus or not.
But deep down, a voice kept telling him that he actually didn't hate Magnus anymore.
However, he didn't know if he should tell Benjamin now that Magnus had actually been by his side all along.
He was afraid Benjamin couldn't accept it.
After all... Magnus's image in their minds was different—one was the biological father who abandoned him, the other was someone who saved his life and did everything to help him.
While Alaric was hesitating, Preston sighed again.
"Speaking of which, when your dad ran away from home back then, it was partly my fault. I didn't control my emotions."
However, under those circumstances, he really couldn't control himself.
Magnus actually had scandals with those messy women outside while Benjamin was having a toxic episode.
Amelia happened to see that news and was greatly shocked.
Then... while the servants were out, she secretly snuck into Benjamin's bedroom and beat and scolded him.
If Preston hadn't finished work that day and wanted to check on Benjamin, Benjamin would probably have been beaten to death by Amelia.
He had wronged Benjamin, and that bastard Magnus had wronged Benjamin even more!
Kicking Magnus out was getting off easy!
He would kick Magnus out again if he had to do it over!
"Grandpa, what happened back then is in the past; let's not bring it up again." Benjamin gently patted Preston's shoulder.
Preston shook his head helplessly and asked curiously: "By the way, we've heard the bad news. Shouldn't you tell me what's going on with Sophia?"
Benjamin and Alaric exchanged glances. The corners of his lips slowly curved into an arc, and all those gloomy emotions were swept away.
According to Preston, if it weren't for his expression being too stiff, the corners of his mouth would have stretched to his ears.
Alaric also smiled: "Grandpa, your wish to hold a great-grandchild will soon come true."
