Chapter 324 Once You Decide on a Person, It's for a Lifetime
"Robert, isn't this inappropriate?" Sophia hesitated, her hand hidden under the desk gripping Finnley's tightly and refusing to let go.
Robert said nothing, but his attitude left no room for argument.
Finnley reached out and ruffled her hair, coaxing gently, "Didn't you say you have a gift for Dane? Go on."
"But..." Sophia looked hesitant.
Sophia's worried look about Finnley made Robert laugh in exasperation. "What? Afraid I'll bully him?"
Sophia pouted, "You never know. You did say back then that any boyfriend of mine would have to pass your test."
In Sophia's eyes, Finnley was completely vulnerable right now, the kind that needed careful protection.
As Finnley's wife, she absolutely couldn't let her husband be bullied.
Not even by Robert.
Robert felt both amused and bittersweet, thinking to himself that Sophia had grown up and now knew to side with outsiders.
He said with mock anger, "Do you have no confidence in him? Or no confidence in your own judgment?"
If he really wanted to make things difficult for Finnley, Finnley wouldn't be sitting here so calmly right now.
Sophia reluctantly stood up, looking back every few steps as she left the study.
Robert rubbed his forehead helplessly. Once he was sure Sophia had left, he got straight to the point: "You recognized me?"
As he spoke, he poured Finnley a cup of hot coffee.
Finnley thanked him and responded casually.
That's right, Finnley had seen Robert before.
In fact, Robert was the first person he saw when he woke up two years ago.
That was also the only time they had met before this.
Two years ago, when Finnley woke up, he was lying in a hospital bed in a daze, covered in injuries.
The moment he opened his eyes, he saw Robert standing by his bed.
Robert put a pill in his mouth, then left in a hurry.
Thinking back now, his quick recovery probably had something to do with that pill.
After that, he never saw him again in the organization.
Robert smiled lightly and took a sip of coffee, praising, "Good memory."
"I never imagined that you were the legendary miracle doctor Robert with amazing medical skills." Finnley smiled meaningfully.
The people in the organization probably never dreamed that the person they were desperately trying to find had been right beside them all along.
Robert didn't beat around the bush with him. "Do you know why I joined that organization?"
"Why?"
Robert leaned back on the sofa, a trace of melancholy flashing in his peach-blossom eyes. "You've probably heard that Elijah is my senior brother. Over twenty years ago, we were both Dane's star students."
Back then, his relationship with Elijah was closer than real brothers.
They ate and lived together every day, sharing good fortune.
He thought they would be best friends for life and would continue researching medicine together forever.
But suddenly one day, he overheard a conversation between Dane and Elijah.
That's when he learned that Dane had stolen his medical research report and even made some modifications to it.
His original intention in writing that report was simply to improve human physical condition through medication.
But they actually wanted to alter human genes.
Once this report came out, it immediately caused a stir in the medical community.
Some strongly supported it and wanted to join, while others raised doubts.
He was worried that Dane would make more mistakes, so he went to persuade him to give up.
But it was already too late for everything.
After Dane's report was released, it attracted attention from many in the medical field.
There were even quite a few ambitious people who saw business opportunities in it.
They formed an organization on their own, naming it "GeneCipher Society."
"From that day on, I've been secretly investigating that organization's movements."
"That organization has very powerful forces behind it. You can't fight them." Finnley warned.
"How will I know if I don't try?" Robert's lips curved in a smile, though his expression remained calm.
He naturally knew that without those powerful forces behind it, given Elijah's personality, he could never have had the patience to lurk around the White family for over ten years.
Finnley put down his teacup and asked, "So when you appeared inside the organization before, had you already found something?"
Robert shook his head with a bitter smile. "Not yet. But I know very well that if I don't take the initiative, both I and even Sophia will become very passive."
He was just forced into it.
Who doesn't want a peaceful life?
But that organization has never been willing to leave him alone, and now they've even set their sights on Sophia.
From the moment he discovered Sophia's medical talent, he swore to protect her with everything he had.
"You're telling me all this, aren't you afraid I'll tell the organization? You trust me that much?" Finnley's fingers tapped lightly on the table, his dark eyes narrowing slightly.
Robert's expression was open and honest. "I'm not trusting you, I'm trusting Sophia. She wouldn't misjudge someone."
Finnley's heart shook, a trace of bitterness flashing at the corner of his lips. "That means... she really loved Benjamin."
"Benjamin is you."
"But she loves who I used to be."
After two years of struggling in the organization, Finnley had seen too many scenes of people killing each other for profit.
He had personally experienced much of it himself.
Because of this, he increasingly didn't believe that genuine feelings existed in this world.
Even if they did, they wouldn't happen to fall on him.
Until... he met Sophia.
She was the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen. She could act cute, complain, and cry in his arms...
Even just a look from Sophia could easily stir up desire in his heart.
But he knew very well that all of Sophia's kindness toward him was based on him being Benjamin.
Without this connection, he didn't dare imagine whether Sophia would even give him a second glance.
Robert laughed. "Then you still don't understand Sophia well enough. When she commits to someone, it's for life. If that person dies, her heart dies with him."
"What do you mean by that?" Finnley snapped out of his depressed mood and asked in confusion.
"Exactly what I said. If you weren't Benjamin, even if you had the same appearance, she would never give you a second look."
Finnley's heart stirred.
So, from the first moment Sophia saw him, she was certain he was Benjamin?
"Sophia is very stubborn. What she decides won't change. I hope you'll treat her well from now on." Robert's voice carried a bit more weariness.
"I will." Finnley promised solemnly.
Silverlight City.
A group of people who appeared to be in casual clothes but were actually well-trained kept wandering around the White Manor.
They seemed to pass by casually, but their eyes kept glancing toward the interior of the White Manor.
Their orders were to kidnap Preston.
But Preston hardly ever left the house, and even when he did go out, he had several bodyguards with him.
They had no chance to get close.
So they had to shift their target to Cillian.
In the afternoon, Cillian made plans to go out with friends. Taking advantage of Benjamin's absence, he sneaked into his garage and took out a globally limited edition Lamborghini sports car.
He'd wanted to drive this car two years ago, but Benjamin had refused to give him the keys.
Now he finally had a chance to drive it. Cillian excitedly got in the car, took out his camera and snapped several photos before starting the engine and leaving the White Manor.
At this moment, he had no idea that danger was slowly approaching him...
