Chapter 245 When Can I Hold My Great-Granddaughter
The next morning, Sophia got up and came downstairs to find they had a visitor at home.
It happened to be someone she knew.
"Sophia, Elijah is here to see you." Preston waved at Sophia, then said to Elijah, "I don't really understand this matter. It needs you professionals to discuss it."
His words were flawless, leaving no room for criticism. Elijah smiled and turned his gaze to Sophia.
"Sophia, long time no see. I've been so busy lately, and I'm only now finding time to come see you."
Sophia walked to the sofa, politely greeted Elijah, then sat down next to Preston. "Elijah, what can I do for you?"
"It's nothing major, just wanted to ask how Benjamin is doing. You know, I was treating him the whole time before you came, so now that I have some free time, I wanted to check in." Elijah sat on the sofa with a gentle and refined manner.
A mild smile played at the corners of his mouth.
Sophia frowned almost imperceptibly, then smiled and said, "He's pretty much recovered. Thanks for your concern, Elijah."
"Pretty much recovered? Did you find an antidote?" Elijah paused while setting down his cup, his tone suddenly becoming excited.
At the mention of Benjamin's improved health, Preston also smiled. "Yes, it's all thanks to Sophia. Otherwise, I really wouldn't have known what to do."
Preston's eyes became slightly moist, but the smile on his face deepened.
Sophia patted Preston's back comfortingly. "It's okay now, Grandpa. Everything will be fine."
Elijah asked seriously, "Sophia, how did you do it? Can you tell me? I've lived all these years and have never seen such a miracle. It's truly surprising."
Both Elijah and Preston's eyes fell on Sophia, waiting for her answer.
Although Preston didn't understand medicine, he had also been curious about how Sophia managed it.
Sophia smiled calmly and gave a simple explanation. "Actually, I combined existing medical treatments together, plus used serum-based antidote medication, and that was enough."
Her brief explanation left Preston confused.
But Elijah nodded knowingly, thoughtfully turning the cup in his hand.
Elijah knew he wouldn't get anything more out of her, so after exchanging a few more pleasantries with Preston, he said goodbye.
"Sophia, were you holding something back from Elijah just now?" Preston asked slowly.
Sophia was stunned, not expecting Preston to see through her so easily.
She nodded and explained, "Grandpa, you said yourself that we should always be cautious and never be completely open with anyone. Besides, this matter concerns both mine and Benjamin's lives."
"You did the right thing." Preston nodded approvingly, looking at Sophia with more satisfaction in his eyes.
He poured a glass of water and handed it to Sophia, continuing, "Actually, I was thinking the same thing. Elijah is the person who understands Benjamin's condition best besides you, and that's exactly why we should be more careful."
If Elijah wouldn't do anything against Benjamin or the White family, that would be best.
But if Elijah used this knowledge against the White family, it would be a fatal blow to them.
The White family's economic lifeline was all in Benjamin's hands. If something happened to him, unless he handled it himself, the other two couldn't hold things together.
When Benjamin came home from work, he saw Preston chatting with Sophia. The scene was harmonious and pleasant.
He smiled and walked in. "Grandpa, Sophia."
"You're back?" Preston pointed to the sofa across from him, a smile on his aged face. "Come sit down."
Benjamin obediently sat down.
As soon as Benjamin sat down, he beckoned to Sophia, then patted the spot next to him. "Come here."
Preston snorted softly, silently sipping his water, pretending not to hear.
Sophia hesitated, but still moved over.
Benjamin's smile deepened as he put his arm around Sophia's slender waist, murmuring in her ear, "Didn't you say you were going to sleep until evening today? Did you rest enough?"
Sophia's cheeks flushed slightly. She had just said that casually last night—how could she really sleep until evening?
Wouldn't that completely mess up her sleep schedule?
"Yes, enough." Sophia had only gotten up when she absolutely couldn't sleep anymore.
"Go to bed earlier tonight." Benjamin's warm fingertips gently rubbed the dark circles under her eyes.
Sophia's dark circles had faded a lot, but compared to before, she still looked somewhat haggard.
Anyone who worked without sleep for days and nights would be exhausted.
Not to mention Sophia's weak constitution—she had pushed herself so hard.
Preston silently watched their interaction, feeling more and more satisfied.
Once the poison in Sophia's body was dealt with, he'd probably be holding a great-grandchild soon.
His two sons were nothing but trouble, and his grandson was no better.
Now he was counting on his great-grandchild to be well-behaved. He wanted to live a few more years.
Preferably a sweet, soft little great-granddaughter—girls weren't as naughty as boys.
Then he could show her off wherever he went.
Just then, a servant came over. "Mr. Preston White, Mr. Benjamin White, Mrs. White, lunch is ready."
Preston stood up from the sofa with his cane and walked toward the dining room. "Let's go eat. I've been hungry for a while now. If it weren't for Elijah's visit, I would have asked them to prepare something for me earlier."
"Elijah was here?" Benjamin looked down at Sophia questioningly.
Sophia nodded. "He came to ask about your condition."
"Did you tell him?" Benjamin frowned.
"I only said what I could say. Don't worry, I'm not stupid. I know what to say and what not to say." Sophia sniffed proudly and sat down at the table.
Benjamin nodded approvingly. "Our Sophia is very smart."
He praised her seriously, his deep eyes tinged with laughter, appearing very sincere.
It was just an ordinary compliment, yet Sophia suddenly felt her cheeks burning.
After lunch, Sophia put down her utensils, her expression serious. "I have something to tell you both."
Seeing her like this, Preston and Benjamin also put down their utensils.
"Sophia, what is it?" Preston asked.
"Grandpa, don't be nervous. I just wanted to tell you that I'll probably be doing experiments soon and won't have time to come home, so I'm planning to stay at the lab. I was afraid you'd worry, so I wanted to let you know in advance." Sophia explained gently.
