Chapter 186 Antipyretic
"I see." Lowell's gaze swept over Sophia, and he chuckled with admiration. "There's always someone better out there. I really didn't expect you to be this impressive."
Soon, the two of them reached the lobby.
Lowell made the introduction. "Cecilia, this is Sophia Brown. She's here to apply as a volunteer at the hospital. Sophia, this is Cecilia Thorne, a nurse at our hospital."
Recently, countless people had come to volunteer at the hospital. The hospital would give them a form to fill out with their basic information.
When Cecilia saw Lowell, her eyes lit up, but when her gaze shifted to Sophia beside him, she couldn't help but freeze for a moment, a flash of amazement in her eyes.
"This... who is this?"
Cecilia asked curiously.
Lowell patiently repeated what he had just said.
Cecilia nodded in understanding and asked in a low voice, "Are you an adult? Our hospital doesn't accept underage volunteers."
Sophia felt like crying. Why did everyone who saw her have to ask if she was an adult?
Did she really look that young?
"Thanks for asking, but I'm already an adult."
Cecilia awkwardly touched her nose, then her eyes moved back and forth between Lowell and Sophia.
A sudden sense of panic rose in her heart.
Sophia was just too beautiful, so beautiful it was almost blinding. Even in a crowd, she would be the center of attention.
What bothered her most was that Lowell's gaze toward Sophia was too gentle.
This made her feel threatened.
She had a crush on Lowell, had been crushing on him for three years. Although they saw each other every day, she had never worked up the courage to confess.
Now seeing Lowell with a delicate and beautiful girl by his side, she naturally felt uncomfortable.
"Ms. Brown, we only accept volunteers who know medical knowledge. I'm afraid you might not be suitable."
Sophia raised an eyebrow and asked back, "You didn't even ask, so how do you know I don't know medical knowledge?"
Lowell also spoke up. "Cecilia, Ms. Brown is a top student who graduated from Oasis University's medical program. Besides, our hospital is short-handed right now."
Cecilia was suddenly speechless. Her mouth opened and closed, but in the end, she couldn't say a word.
Oasis University?
That was the top institution that countless students across the country dreamed of attending, the dream of so many people.
She carefully looked Sophia up and down, finally fixing her gaze on her face, and couldn't help but purse her lips.
Could this girl be lying?
Did she really think Oasis University was a place just anyone could get into?
In her experience, pretty girls usually didn't focus their attention on studying.
Especially someone as strikingly beautiful as Sophia must have had many admirers since childhood.
Girls like that always enjoyed being the center of attention, and over time, they definitely wouldn't focus on studying.
How could she possibly have gotten into Oasis University?
Could it be that she was lying just to get Lowell's attention?
Thinking this way, she felt even more disdainful.
But with Lowell present, Cecilia could only think these thoughts and didn't dare say them out loud.
She glared at Sophia, then took out a form and handed it to her.
"Just fill in your personal information on this."
Just then, a nurse suddenly ran over. "Lowell, there's a patient who needs surgery. Everyone's looking for you."
Lowell immediately said, "I'll be right there."
He turned to look at Sophia.
Sophia smiled and nodded at him. "Lowell, if you have something to do, go ahead."
"Alright, I'll come find you after the surgery."
After Lowell left, Sophia filled out the form and returned it to Cecilia, asking, "What should I do now?"
Cecilia looked around and casually pointed in a direction. "Go over there and help calm down the patients waiting in line."
The hospital was short-staffed, and many patients were getting impatient and starting to curse.
However, this hospital was already the best one in the area.
And since Vast Mountain was in a relatively remote location, quite far from other cities, they could only choose to get treatment here.
"Okay." Sophia nodded lightly and walked toward the crowd.
The first-floor lobby was packed with people, many patients crowded together.
Some patients' faces were full of anxiety and pain, but with so many people ahead of them in line, they could only endure their suffering.
Occasionally, a few impatient people who tried to cut in line were scolded and sent back to wait their turn.
Sophia's gaze swept over them, feeling uncomfortable.
This rainstorm had come too suddenly, with almost no warning. Even the weather forecast hadn't predicted it in advance.
It wasn't until two hours before the rainstorm that an emergency notice was issued.
But by then, it was too late to evacuate.
As Sophia walked through the crowd, she suddenly heard deafening crying.
It was a child's voice.
She looked in the direction of the sound and noticed an old lady holding a child, her eyes full of worry and anxiety.
The child was only about one or two years old, lying in the old woman's arms crying uncontrollably.
People around were cursing and scolding the old lady, telling her to control her grandson.
The old lady's face was full of embarrassment as she kept apologizing to the people around her, gently patting her grandson's back to comfort him.
Sophia walked over and asked gently, "Ma'am, what's wrong with your grandson?"
The old lady's eyes were red, continuously patting her little grandson. Hearing Sophia's gentle inquiry, she felt somewhat sad and wronged. "My grandson has a fever, it's already 104°F... If it keeps going like this, his brain will be damaged. He's my only grandson. What will I do if something happens to him!"
Sophia reached out and touched the little boy's forehead, and couldn't help but be shocked.
It was too hot.
"Wait here for a moment, I'll be right back." With that, she immediately went to find Cecilia to get a thermometer.
Cecilia huffed unpleasantly. "We don't have any."
Sophia didn't understand why she had such hostility toward her. She said seriously, "There's a patient with a very serious fever. If this continues, I'm afraid something bad will happen."
"We really don't have any! The hospital doesn't have many supplies to begin with. All those thermometers have been taken by patients."
Sophia sighed helplessly and immediately took out her phone from her bag and made a call.
She returned to the old lady's side and said softly to comfort her, "Try not to worry. Your grandson will be fine."
"How can I not worry? When we came, the child was already at 104°F, and now he's even hotter than before... I'm really scared..."
Sophia slowly crouched down and gently patted the old lady's back in silent comfort.
After hesitating for a moment, she suddenly remembered that she seemed to have fever medicine in her bag.
