Chapter 24 Protect you
After putting down his phone, Nicholas stood in front of the bright floor-to-ceiling window, as if deep in thought. His slightly furrowed brow made him even more handsome and intimidating.
"From now on, no matter who dares to hurt you, I will make sure they have nowhere to be buried. I didn't protect you well in the past, but I will never let you suffer again in the future."
Overlooking the entire city, Nicholas couldn't help but clench his fists as he thought about all the ridiculous things that had happened to Caroline.
He turned around and picked up the bathrobe that was casually placed on the bed, preparing to take a shower.
"Ah, Nicholas, you pervert! Don't you know how to knock before entering? Get out!"
Unexpectedly, Caroline, who was just in the bedroom, had unknowingly ended up in the bathroom. Maybe because Nicholas was too immersed in his thoughts earlier, he hadn't noticed her movement.
"Shh, why are you shouting? The soundproofing in my house is very good, not only can't people outside hear, even the bedroom can't hear anything. Besides, what's wrong with us being just two people in here?"
Seeing Nicholas's wicked smile, Caroline realized she was now on a thief ship, and there was no escaping it.
"You go out first, and you can come in after I finish showering. Please, hurry up and leave."
Go out? Nicholas finally has this opportunity, how could he easily give up? Of course, he wouldn't go out. Instead, he slowly walked towards Caroline.
"Do you think I would give up such a good opportunity so easily? Are you stupid, or is it just me? But to be honest, I don't mind giving you a wonderful memory. Hmm?"
Nicholas's wicked smile momentarily made Caroline addicted. After all, men with such figure and looks were becoming rarer.
Due to the steam, the whole bathroom was filled with an ambiguous atmosphere, making Caroline blush. The strong hormones made Caroline a bit breathless.
Seeing that Nicholas was about to make his move, Caroline instinctively pushed away the man in front of her.
"Not yet, it's not time yet. Can we wait a bit longer, please?"
Nicholas knew that this girl was not yet used to what was happening right now, and regretted his impulsive action. Looking at Caroline's flushed face, Nicholas smiled.
"Okay, I promise you that I won't do anything until you are ready. Whatever it is, I'll always ask for your opinion, okay? You're such a silly girl."
Looking at Nicholas's gentle expression, Caroline realized that he was completely different from the person she knew from work.
"Okay big boss, you can leave now. I need to take a shower and go to bed." Unconsciously, Caroline pouted and looked so cute that Nicholas felt his heart melting. "Don't be so cute next time, or I might forget what I promised you. I believe you know what I mean. Well, hurry up and take a shower and rest early."
Caroline was a little confused about what she had just done. She couldn't believe that this man referred to her as "cute" and it was terrifying. She had not realized her involuntary action.
As Nicholas left, Caroline quickly locked the bathroom door, just in case he changed his mind. She couldn't bear the thought of it.
"Caroline, why are you blushing? See, someone called you 'cute', how come you can't keep calm? You have to be calm and collected, understand?" Caroline quipped to herself as she looked in the mirror. Nicholas, on the other hand, opened his laptop and continued his work. However, he still felt concerned about what had happened today.
Half an hour later, Caroline finally emerged from the bathroom. As she lay in bed, with her face still a little flushed, Nicholas couldn't help but smile. "This girl is so easily embarrassed," he thought to himself.
"I'm done taking a shower. You can go now. I'll rest first. Goodnight." After saying a simple 'good night', Caroline ran back to her bedroom, lying in bed and reflecting on what had happened today. To her, all of this was so absurd. She had endured so much injustice over the years because of her mother's mistake.
As she drifted off to sleep, Nicholas finished tidying up and quietly came back to the bedroom. He looked at the little woman on the bed and felt that everything he had done was so worthwhile.
"Goodnight, silly girl." As he habitually kissed Caroline's forehead, he realized that she had a fever. No wonder she had been blushing earlier. He quickly went downstairs to get some fever-reducing medicine and prepared some candy. Since he knew that Caroline didn't like taking medicine, he prepared some candy as a replacement.
As he watched Caroline curled up in bed, Nicholas felt his heartbreak. "Silly girl, get up and take your medicine. You know you have a fever? Who else but me would take care of you like this? You really worry me."
Caroline quickly woke up at the mention of being called "silly" and, although still suffering from a fever, she glared at the man in front of her.
"Okay, take your medicine now. Otherwise, you will feel even worse tomorrow. I prepared some candy for you to eat after taking the medicine, it will make you feel better."
"Caroline touched her forehead drowsily and realized that she was running a fever. She looked at Nicholas sitting next to her and felt a warm affection in her heart. "It's so late, but you still knew I had a fever and prepared medicine for me. Thank you so much." For some reason, this simple act made Caroline teary-eyed. Growing up, this was the first time someone had cared about her like this; not even her foster father could be as attentive, let alone her family members at home.
"Don't thank me," Nicholas replied. "Taking care of you, looking out for you is what I should do. If you need to thank anyone, it's me for not breaking my promise of waiting for you. But even then, I shouldn't need thanks because taking care of you is just natural for me. Do you understand that?"
Nicholas's heart felt like it was being pressed down by a stone as he saw Caroline's eyes turn red. She was someone he could never bear to see hurt, and now she was shedding tears over something so small.
"Just take your medicine, and we'll rest together. You don't have to go to work tomorrow; I'll take care of the leave for you. Rest well, and we'll think about the rest later, okay?"
As Caroline looked at the fever medicine in her hand, she felt like the luckiest woman in the world. The man before her knew that she didn't like taking medicine, so he even prepared some fruit candy for her.
