Chapter 7 Bella's POV
Chapter Seven
Bella’s POV
“Huh?,” my brows shot up.
“Don't play dumb,” he snapped. Stepping closer he said “You know what I'm talking about.”
I flinched, my heart rate spiked up.
“It was there, I.... I placed it there.”
“So where the hell is it now?”, he moved closer until I could smell his minty breath, I could almost taste it.
He raised an eyebrow, “Are you trying to sabotage the company Ms Reyes?, do you have any idea how crucial that file is to close the deal?”
I shook my head quickly, “No…no sir.”
He lowered his eyes at me and spoke coolly,“Then maybe it was a mistake to hire you, are you tired of this job Ms Reyes?. Unless you like to have some free time on your hands, I can grant that request.”
No, no, no. I need this job to help Noah get better.
“No, my son…..” The words slipped out before I caught myself, I quickly pressed my lips shut.
Something flashed across his eyes but it was too sudden to detect. I could not name it.
Tears pricked my eyes,“Please sir, I really need this job. It won't happen again.”
“Good, then get me the file or you won't leave the office today.”
The threat seemed to awaken some sort of mum superpower in me. I swung into action immediately, rifling through drawers and folders till my hands trembled.
Today was Noah's doctor appointment and I cannot miss it.
I looked at Anna across the glass walls, her lips curled evily and eyes shone mischievously. I imagined horns on her head, she could be the devil's mistress.
Suddenly it clicked, it was her.
An hour ago, she passed me the documents. She had handled all the documents needed for today's meeting.
I fist balled as I stomped towards her office with my feet hitting the floor hard.
“You.” I stretched out a finger, my hand shook from the rage I felt.
Anna did not flinch, “Oh, so you've figured it out.” A throaty cackle tore from her throat.
“How could you do something like this? You're evil!”
She leaned back on her chair and looked at me, her eyes turned slits. “This is just the beginning, Bella. Consider this a warning,I will make sure you personally quit.”
And with that said, she wheeled her chair around and continued typing away at her computer.
I was on the verge of breaking down and quitting but I needed money to make Noah feel better.
I steeled my resolve and waited for the perfect opportunity.
Hours later, it was lunch break, bingo!
Anna left the office, I silently slid in without anyone seeing me.
My hands shook as I shuffled through the shelves, the boxes, the table, everything. But I could not find the file. I pulled my hair back in frustration and sat down on the floor.
I contemplated my options when my eyes caught something. There was something peeking out from under the rug.
Curiosity won as I walked over, it was a file. I dumped the contents on the floor, my jaw fell. My fingers trembled as I picked it up.
It was cut out pictures of Xander with lipstick kisses and little hearts, my blood ran cold.
What the actual hell?
It was pictures from when they were young. Xander had a pixie cut and braces, Anna was still the same old pretty face.
Disgust twisted my insides, what sort of a creep was Anna.
There was still something else in the file, so I pulled it out .
It was the B-x file.
That monster is purposely trying to get me fired. Reporting this was enough to put her in Xander's bad books, but what do I stand to gain?.
I closed my eyes and envisioned pulling her perfect hair and clawing her perfect face.
I reached for my phone and immediately took pictures of everything I found in the office, just in case.
She was really getting on my nerves. I needed something as leverage over her.
I checked the time on my phone, it was 30 mins until lunch break was over.
I scrambled around making sure I put everything back in place, I took one last peep at the office and closed the door behind me.
I made a mental note to be more careful around Anna in the future.
Maybe it was a mistake working here, they are all crazy.
Anna was a crazy person obsessed with Xander, Xander was a crazy person obsessed with work.
I scoffed, “What have I gotten myself into?” I said out loud to no one in particular.
I placed the file on Xander’s desk with a small note on top: I'm sorry.
Hopefully that was enough, I did not have the strength to face him again today.
I checked out for the day, rolled up my sleeves and made my way to the hospital.
I got to the hospital and stood at the entrance of Noah's ward.
I paused and took a deep breath.
I hated the hospital. The fluroscent lights and the faint antiseptic smell in the air, it reminded me of death.
I forced a smile on my face, I needed to be strong for Noah.
I opened the door slowly so I won't wake him and peered inside.
His eyes was wide open. His face was pale and small. Red spots from the injections covered his arm but his grey eyes twinkled brightly, they never lost their warmth.
“Mommy” Noah called out from his bed.
“Hi baby.” my voice softened immediately.
“Look what mommy got you”, I brought out a small T-Rex toy from my bag.
His face face lit up, he gave me a toothy grin, “Wow, thank you mom.”
Tears stung the corner of my eyes but I blinked them away.
My heart almost burst from joy. This is why I came to New York, this was why I endured Xander’s anger, why I faced people like Anna everyday.
Because for Noah, I'd survive anything.
